TROLLEY SWITCH.
Applicationfiled September 27, 1922; Serial no. 590,986.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Bosnian SKI, a citizenofPoland, residing at Cohoes, in the county of Albany'and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Trolley Switches, of which the followingis a specification. Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon which form a part of this specification. imilar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein. The principal object of the invention is to faoilitat'ethe passage of a trolley over or past a switch.
Other objects will appear with the following description. "Fig. 1 of the drawings is a topplan view of the switch with the line-wires and switchplate-supporting cables broken-away.
Fig. '2 is a bottom plan view of the same showing the position of the trolley-wheel in connection entering the switch from the right-hand member oftwo divergent rails leading from the neighboring end of the switch. I
Fig. 3 is a section partly in side elevation and partly in vertical longitudinal section of the same. i
Fig. 4: is a cross-section of the same taken on the broken line Jr-4E in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is a trolley-switoh-plate adapted to be sup-' are flush with the trolley-engaged surfaces of the rails, 3 and 4. I
At the other end of the switch-plate, 1,
is a rail, 7, similar to the rails, 3-and 4c, and connected in a similar manner wlth the l1ne-.
wire, 8. i
The rail, 7, terminates in a tongue, 9,.
the rails, 3 and 18, as is customary.
pivoted at 10, upon the switch-plate, 1, the swinging end of said tongue being alinable with the inner endsfof the divergent rails, 3 and talternatively as indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 2. i
The tongue, 9, isnormally controlled by a spring, 11, connected with a pin, 12, fixed upon the swinging end of the tongue and playing in a slot, 13, in the switch-plate whereby'the tongue is normallyheldin midposition between the neighboring ends of 4, as shown by solid lines inFigzfZ. I I
The innerend of the tongue, 9, and the inner ends of the rails,3 and 1, are beveled as" shown atflle, whereby the passage of the trolley-wheel from the tongue to one of the rails, 3 and 4, or the passage of the trolleywheel from one of the rails, 3 and et,to the tongue is facilitated.
Theseveral rails, 3, 4:, and 7, and the tongue, 9, are formed with side grooves, 15,1 as shown more particularly in Fig. 4, which grooves are adapted to be engaged by pins, 16, projecting inwardly from the members of the yoke, 17, within which the trolleywheel, 5, is rotatively mounted, said yoke being at the upper end of the trolley-pole,
\ The pins, 16, are carried by the respective spring-plates, 19, attached to the outer sides of the members of the yoke, 17, whereby the pins are yieldingly mounted and adapted to move towardand from each other.
I have shown a trolley-cord, rope or cable, 20, connected with the trolley-pole, 18, for controlling the pole in applying the same i to the line-wires or the switch-rails or tongue. I
The operation of the mechanism is as follows:
In passing into the switch from either direction, as electric railways are usually laid out, the car swervesto the right, thus tending to cause the trolleyto deflect to the right; and in passing from a switch to, the main line, the car usually enters the switch with the trolley in engagement with the right-hand member of the two convergent line-members, 6.
Thus, in entering the switch from the end having the divergent, or convergent, rails,
substantial alineinent with said rail, 3, and
the trolley would have asubstantially continuous path from" the rail, 3, "over the tongue, 9, to the rail, 7.
In entering the switch from the opposite direction the trolley-wheel, due to the swerve of the car, would be deflectedor 1nclined toward therail, 4 in its path over the tongue, 9, causingthe tongueto be brought into substantial alinement withthe rail, 4, andthus to aftorda substantiallycontinuous path from the tongue to the rail, 4. v
D-uringthe-passage of the trolley-wheel over or through the switch in either-direchaving a switch-plate, a rail leading from tion, thetendency of the trolley-wheel to :jumpdownward in passing the gap between i the neighboring-ends of the tongue, 9, and- .the rails,:-3, 4, is overcome byengagement oi the pins, 16, with the sidegrooves, 15, 1n either the rail or the tongue over which the trolley-wheel is Inovingforwardly.
The pins, 16, are mounted upon the trolley-yoke, 17, so that they engage the side grooves'in the rails, 3, 4, or tongue, 9, at a point in rear'o'f that at which thetrolleywheel engages the respeotivetongue or rail, so that at the time when the trolley-wheel is Crossing the gap, 21, between the neigh- 1 *boringends ofthe' tongue and'the rails, 8, 4,
in eitherdirection, downward movement of the trolley-poleis,pi'evented by engagement of the pins, 16, with the side grooves, 15, in
the tongue or one of the rails, 3,4, as the case may be. i I What I'claini asnewand desireto'secure by Letters Patent is- 1.v The cornbinat'ionwith a trolley-switch having a switch plate, a railleading :from
one end ofthe'switch-plate terminating at its inner end in a pivoted tongue; and a pair of divergent rails leading from the other end of the switeh-plate, saidt'ongue being alin'ab-le with the'inner ends of said divergent rails alternatively, said-rails and tongue being'provided with side-grooves; of a trolley-wheel grooved to traverse said rails and tongue; and a trolley wheel-support having projections engageable with the sidegroov'es in said "rails and tongue.
2. The combination with a trolley-switch having a switch-plate, arail leading from one end of'the switch-plate terminating at its inner endin a pivoted tongue, and a pair .of divergent rails leading from the other end of the switch-plate, said tongue being alinable with the innerends'ofsaid, divergent rails alternatively, said rails and tongue being provided with side-grooves; of a' trolleywheel-support having projections en-v gageable with the side-grooves in said rails and tongue rearwardly of the point of enfor divergentrails leading from the other end of the switch-plate, said tongue being alin- 'able"with the inner ends of said divergent rails alternatively, said rails and tongue bewheel grooved to traverse said -rail-s and tongue; anda trolley wheel-support shaving yieldingpins en agageablewith' the sidegrooves in "said rails and tongue rearwardly of the point of engagement of the trolleywheel with said rails and tongue.
4. The combination with a trolley-switch one end otthe switch-plate terminating at its inner end in aspring-controlled'tongue; and a pair of divergent rails leading from the otherend otthe switch-plate, said tongue being alinable with the inner ends otsaid divergent rails alternatively, said 'rails and tongue being provided withsidegrooves, of
a trolley-wheel grooved'to tr -averse sai d rails and tongue; -and' 1a trolley-wheel support having projections engageable with thesidegrooves in said rails and tongue.
5. The combination with atrolley-switch having. a' switch-plate, a railleading from one end of the switchgplate terminatingat its inner end in a spring-controlledtongue, and
a pairof-divergent rails :leading "from the other end of the switcheplate, said tongue bealinable with the inner ends of said divergent rails alternatively, said -railsand tongue being provided with sideigroofves; of a trolley-wheel grooved to traverse said rails and -tongue;' 'and a trolley-wheel-support "having yielding pins engageable with the rails alternatively, said rails'andtonguebeing provided with side-grooves, the neigh boring ends of said divergent rails and tongue being beveled; of a "trolley-wheel grooved to traverse said -rails and tongue; and a trolleywheel-support having project101lS I1gtlg6 &bl6-Wlth the side-grooves in :said rails, and tongue.
7 The con bination with a trolley-switch having a sw1tch-plate, a rail leading'froin one end of the switch-plate terminating at ing provided'wit'h' side-grooves; of a trolley- Wheel grooved to traverse said rails and tongue; and a trolley-wheel-support having 10 projections engageable with the sidegrooves in said rails and tongue.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of September, 1922.
