IMPROVEMENT IN CARD AND TICKET PRINTING PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1413,1780, dated October 21, 1873; application Iied April 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. 191301;, of Du Quoin, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fig.4 is a partial. rear elevation.
These improvements relate to the general structure and arrangement of a printing-press adapted particularly to the printing of cards, tags, envelopes, &c.
That others may fully understand my improvements, I will particularly describe them.
My press has a strong and solid metallic frame, A, with a stationary platen, I3, and a moving bed, 0, upon which the form is placed and locked fast. The bed C moves up and down between guides D, and is actuated by a pitman, E, worked by a crank, F, the connection between said pitman and bed being by means of a tumbling-box, G. The inking-table I is attached to the bed 0, and moves up and down therewith, and the ink-rollers one or more, are mounted in a reciprocating frame, J, which moves in guides attached to the said inking-table. The proper reciprocation of said roller-frame is produced by a compound lever, K L, the part K having its fulcrum stationary at the bottom of the frame A, and its upper end jointed to the reciprocating frame J, while the part L is jointed to the ink-table, near its junction with the moving bed 0, and its lower end is jointed to the lever K, so that as the bed 0 sinks the lever K is moved outward and carries the frame J and roller with'it, and when the bed rises the reverse motion of said lever and frame is produced. The adjustment is such erse the form twice for each impression. The inking-table is made adjustable by means of screws and slots 8, so that it can be brought accurately correct in respect to the level of the form. The joint between the parts K and L is made adjustable along the part K, and the distance traveled by the rollers may thereby be varied, as may be desirable. The position vertically of the bed C may be adjusted by means of set-nuts e g, whereby the pitman E is lengthened or shortened; and for the purpose of imparting a certain elasticity to the pressure in taking the impression, as well as to permit the type to dwell in the impression, an elastic washer, h, is placed between the nut g and the tumbling-box G. This washer may be of elastic gum," or it may be a metallic spring; and its tension may be increased or diminished by turning the nut 9 forward or backward. This press is intended to feed itself automatically, the holder being charged with cards, The card-holder is a frame, M, the sides m of which are adjustable toward or from each other, so as to be adapted to cards, &c., of any length. The top of the holder, upon which the cards rest, consists of a slat, a, connectedto each of the side pieces at at the ends only by means of stirrup pieces 0, so that there is a longitudinalspace between said slat and the side piece m, within which the feeders P move back or forth. A pressure-board, Q, actuated by a spring, It, or an equivalent weight, rests upon the bottom of the pile of cards, and feeds them constantly upward as the one at the top is moved over the platen. The feeder P consists of a long finger with a shoulder, 19, adjustable as to depth by a guard-plate, q, which may be raised as desired by a spring, a". The feeders P are mounted upon sleeves s, which fit and slide upon a rod, It, so that they may be moved toward or from each other as the card-holder sides on are'adjusted. Coiled springs t are always under tension to throw downward inner ends of the feeders, and keep them constantly in contact with the top of the pile of cards. The rod It is itself mounted upon a sleeve, I, at or near each end, and said sleeves fit and slide upon guiderod U; and said rod R is actuated by a slotted lever, V, which receives motion from the crank F or pitman E.
The operation. of said lever V is to cause the rod 1% to slide back and forth, and reciprocate the feeder I at each forward movement of said feeders.
