Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143.766, dated October 21, 1873; application filed June 7, 1873.
Be it known that I, GEO. IIUNTER, of the city ot' \\'ashington, District ot' Columbia, have invented a new and nset'ul I nprovement in Sewing-Machiues, ot' which the following is a speciticntion:
My invcntion consists of an im]rovementin the node ofoperatingany ordinary tbur-motion feed, the parts intermediate between the operation-surtace and the driving-shat't being so constructed and arran ged,substantially as hereinaftcr described, that a single adjustment will regulate the length and the rise ot' the feed simultaneously. It consists, also, of an improved mode of connecting the vibrating arm that operates the feed, with the driving-shat't, through the medium of an angnlarly-borcd cylindrical slccve, whcreby great t'acility in the asscmbling of the parts and great cheapness and simplicityare securcd. lt consists, finally, in a special arragement ot' the necdle-bar and the cam by means of which the power ot' the driving-shat't is appliedthereto.

The t'ced mechanism. consists ot' thecan B upon the driving-shaft; the feed-level' I, to the outerend ot' which the rouglened surtce feed or dog (not shown in the drawings) is attached; the movhle t'nlcrun K, upon which this feedlever is supported; a eonne.-ting-rod, which is forked at its uppcr end to emhrace the can B and which, at its lower end, is attached to the inner end ot' the t'ced-lever; the bar O, through which the connccting-rod passes, ?na? which serves as a t'nlcrum for such conneeting-rod; and the spring S, which rests upon the har O, and serves to maintain the. contact of the t'orkcd head ot' tl e connecting-rod with the cam upon thc dririig-shat't.
'The feed-dog may he connected with the Iever l in any suitable manner. -I prefer, however, to use a har placed at right; angles with the levcr l, one end of such bar being connected with the oute: end ot said levcr, and the other end ot' it upported in a loop or way, in or ou which it may lay trans versely ot' the bed-plate ot' the machine. In this way the roughened surface or dog, which is attaehed to the upper side or edge ot' this bar, is made to partake ot' the vertical and transvcrse.movement ot' the outer end ot' the lever I, and thcrehy feed the goods with which it comes in contact.
Insteadof the forked head of' the connectingrod, held in contact with the cam by means ot' a spring, as shown in Fig. 1, this rod ight be provided with ayoke that would entirely embrace the cam, in which case the spring' could be dispesed with. I prefer, however, to use the Construction shown in Fig. 1, as the parts worl more smoothly and with less noise.

Itis plain to see that, according.:- as the fulcrnm is placed nearer to the point ot' connection of the feed-lover with the connecting-red, both the length and the rise ot' the feed will be inercased thereby, and vice versa.

The cam E and its guide may be made in one piece, if desired. Said cam may be connected to the needle-bar in any suitable manner; but in all cases, aceordin to my present invention, it should be connected at ornear the end nearest the operator, by which arrang'ement the downward stroke of the needle-bar is facilitated, inasmuch as the power of the drivingshaft is thrown upon the needle-har above the line of its axis at the very time when it is neeessary that this bar should move with the least friction, viz., at the tine when the needle is justentering the goods. From this arrangementof the needle-bar relatively to the slotted cam and the orank-pin, whereby the needlebar is placed near the edge of the face-plate which is next to the operator, it follows that the thread may be brought down squarely from the tension device to the eye ot' the needle in front of the operator without:- tnrning a corner, as is the case in other,transverse-shnttle machines. i

\\'hat I claim is the tollowing:
1. The combination ot' the cam upon the drivingshatt, the forkcd connecting-rod, provided with its spring and fixed t'nlcrnm, and the feed-lover, provided with its adinstable fulcrum, substantially as and t'or the purpose set forth. V
2. The combination of the straight driving'- shat't A, the vibrating arm 13 and the augularly-bored cvlindrical' sleeve L with its attached cam 13', for Operating the shnttle and the connecting-rod of the feed meehanism, substatially as shown and described.
3. The combination ot' the needle-bar, the
slotted cam, and cam-guide, when arrang'ed substantiallv as shown and described, so that the needle-bar maybe eauscd to move near that side of the needle-head which is next to the operator. v
