Be it known that l, LEWrsC. Barinas, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident ot Easton. Northampton County., State of al Pennsylvania, have-` invented a certain Manual Adr-Feed Control for Rock Drills, of which the following is a specilication., accompanied by drawings.,
This invention relates to duid pressure operated rock drills of the hammer type, but more particularly to air feed control for 'the feeding element of a stope drill, to enable the operator to maintain full rotation and hammer power with reduced air feed when going through a soft spot for instance.
A device of similar type is disclosed in the co-pending application of Fred M. Slater., Serial No. 398,387., tiled July 23rd, i920, the said application having matured into Patent Xo. 1.407.591 `and assigned to lngersoll- Rand Company. The primary'object or the present invention is to-enable the control of the feeding element ot air feed cylinder to be. elfen-ted by a simple pressure of the tingers or thumb upon a manual lever mounted on the drill handle ordinarily called the rotation handle. Instead of relying upon the pressure oi'lthe lingers or thumb upon a but ton, l provide a lever having substantial length and surface which may be grasped by the hand or fingers and enable suiicient pressure L be quickly brought upon the controlling valve to readily overcome the opposing air pressure within the handle tending to close the valve.

Referring to the drawings. a `stope drill is illustrated in Figure l having the usual cylinder and front head ll carrying the drill steel C. 'l'he iront head is connected to the cylinder as by means oi' the usual side bolts the rotation motor casing 9, i921. serial No. 518,551.

In accordance with my invention, instead' ot controlling the air feed in theusual man.- ner. as by means of the throttle valve P, l provide a valve R in the handle controlling portsand passages leading to' the feeding element, thereby enabling the operator to regulate the feeding element in accordance with the requirements ot the work without removing his hand from the handle.
In this instance, the handle is preferably hollow and provided with the passage S eX- tending from a port 'l at the inner end of the handle to a valve chamber U near the handle extension Q. The valve chamber U communicates With the atmosphere through the end of the handle by means ot the port V and the chamber is closed by means of the screw threaded plug lll between which and the valve R a spring X is compressed so that the valve BY normally closes communication between the chamber U and the atmospheric port V. rl`he valve is preferably provided. with a head or but-ton Y at its outer end, in this instance extending through a sleeve Z secured over the handle P. The sleeve Z is valve head to portion p extending in this instance provided with a hand lever `af, pivoted to the sleeveon the transverse pivot pin b and said lever extends over the valve head or button Y so that by pressing' the hand lever @towards the handle P sucient leverage` is brought to bear upon the force the valve inwardly against the spring X and against air pressure from vthe feeding element tending to hold the valve to its seat. The lever a is preferably provided with a beveled portion biorming a stop for limiting the outward movement of the lever.J
In the modification shown in Figure 3, the handle extension Q forming an extension of the handle P2 having the passage S," is provided With the valve chamber c, and the valve (l controls communication betwen the chamber c and the port e leading to atmosphere through the end of the handle extension Q. The -valve d `lis conveniently mounted in a valve cage or block f and is normally pressed to its seat by the spring A sleeve L over the handle extension holds the valve plug f in position and the valve head j extends through this sleeve in position to be actuated by the hand lever k which in this instance, is pivoted at one end at one side of the valve on the transverse pivot pin o and is provided at the other end at the other side of the valve 'with a bearing into the interior of the and having a spring 1' the portion p and the extension Q. A stop e handle extension Q interposed between Wall of the handle extends longitudinally from the end of the hand lever adjacent the pivot 0 and cooperates With the body portion of the handle to limit the outwar movement of the hand lever k.

2. In a rock drill the combination with a luid pressure feeding element, and a rotation handle extending at one side of the machine, of ports and passages permittingthe passage of motive fluid from the feeding element lthrough the handle to atmosphere, a manually closedl spring pressed4 valve located in the handle controlling said passage of motive fluid to atmosphere, and a lever having a manual portion extending longitudinally along the handle and cooperating With the valve, one end of said lever being pivoted transversely to the handle at one side of the valve, anda spring onthe handle beneath the opposite end of the lever assisting the valve spring to force the handle outwardly away from the handle.
