To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JosErH L. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baton Rouge, in the county of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Making Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for forming barrels, drums or the like, one of the objects being to provide a machine to which the assembled hoops and staves in a strip are fed, the machine operating to grip the strip and to bend the same to cylindrical form so as to bring the ends of the hoops to position where they can be secured quickly and accurately.
Another object is to provide a machine of this type having means for bending and holding the strip in place so that it will not break during the forming process.
Another object is to provide a machine from which the formed article can be removed quickly without requiring the disconnection of any of the parts.
A still further object is to provide a machine of this character which is constantly under the control of an operator and which can be actuated easily to form the barrels or drums accurately.
Other objects will present themselves as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

reference the numeral 1 designates a frame comprising upstanding end frames 2 and 3 and a likewise upstanding center frame a connected by upper and lower longitudinal beams, whereby a rigid structure is provided. Bearings 6 are supported by the frame members 1 and a, j ournaled within these bearings is a shaft 7 having one end portion projecting across the space between the members 1 and 3 into a large opening 8 provided in the member 3, said opening being concentric with the shaft as shown in Figure 3. A large bevel gear 9 is fixed to the shaft 7 between the bearings 6 and is in mesh with a small bevel pinion 10 secured to a transverse shaft 1]. which is mounted in bearings 12 secured to one of the beams 5 at one side of the machine. A hand wheel 13 secured to the shaft 11 provides means for rotating the shaft 7 Keyed on and adjustable longitudinally of that portion of the shaft 7 between the members 3 and 4 is a series of mandrel units 14:, each of which includes a segmental body member 15 having a hub 16 concentric with the arcuate edge of the member and which engages the shaft 7. An ear 17 projects from this member 15 and is pivotally engaged by an arcuate member 18 whi h bridges the hub 16. Both of the members 15 and 18 are provided with a circumferential flange 19 and formed on the flange face of the member 18 at that end remote from the ear 17 is a lug 20. The corresponding end of the member 15 has a shaft 21 journaled therein, this shaft carrying a cam'22 on the free end of which is provided a hook 23. The shaft 2]. extends transversely through the members 15 of all of the units and the various cams 22 are connected to the shaft 21 by means of set screws 24. A handle 25 is attached to one end of the shaft 21 as shown.
Each of the members 18 is provided between the ends of its periphery with a transverse slot 26 and extending inwardly from the slot in aguide opening 27 which passes Slidably mounted within the guide opening 27 is a block 28 to the outer end of which is secured a gripping plate 29 adapted to extend into the recess 26 when the member 18 is in one of its positions. Each block 28 has a slot 30 in its inner end provided with a cross pin 31 and this 1n engages one end of an eye bolt 32, the ot er end of which is slidable in a bracket 33 secured to the hub 16. A nut 34 engages the bolt and serves to prevent its withdrawal from the bracket A coiled spring 35 is mounted on the bolt and bears at one end against the bracket and at its other end against the block 28. l
A set screw 36 is provided on each hub- 16 for engaging the shaft 7 to hold the member 14 against sliding movement after it has been adjusted to proper position.
Each of the framemembers 3 and 4 is provided with a standard 3'? having bearing .38 formed thereon. A shaft 39 has its ends eccentrically mounted in the bearings 88 and is provided at one end with an oper ating crank handle 40. Pressure frames 41 are mounted on the shaft 39, one for each of the mandrels and located overthe same. These presser frames 41 comprise spaced cheek plates 42, formed integrally at the to) and connected near the bottom by a cross bar 43. The shaft 39 passes through an elongated opening 48 in the upper end of the presser frame.
Presser rollers 44 are mounted between the cheek plates at the lower end thereof and are adapted to engage the mandrels above the shaft 7. A hearing block 45 engaged by the shaft 39 is mounted to slide between the cheek plates, and has extending downwardly from the underside a threaded stem 46, the stem 46 has threaded thereon a collar 47. A spring 48 is interposed be tween the collar and the bar 43.
A red 49 extends between the frame members 3 and 4 and passes through an elongated openings 50 in each of the members 41. Spacing collars 51 are mounted on .the rod 49 between the cheek plates 42, a set screw providing means for securing the collar in place. Angular guide rails 53 are supported on a table 54 and are so spaced apart as to support the ends of the staves to be formed into a barrel.
When it is desired to form a barrel the eccentric shaft 39 is given a one half rotation from the position shown in the drawing which relieves the tension of the spring 48 on the rollers 44 and moves the rollers out of engagement withthe mandrels. The handle 25 is also movedto release the lug 20 and permitthe mandrel members 15 to collapse, which causes the clamp 29 to open to receive the end of the assembled staves and hoops; The strip comprising staves S and hoops H is fed along the guide rails 53 until the first stave S comes under the various plates 29. The handle 25 is then moved to the position shown in the drawings, gripping the strip tightly. A leaf spring 55 secured to the hub 16 engages the hook 523 to hold the same in contact with the lug 20.
From an inspection of the drawing it will be evident that in operative position the presser frames 41 have only a right line movement due to the slots 43 and 50 which moving over the shafts 39 and 49 respectively effect this movement. Particular importance is attached to this feature of the machine, since in forming a barrel pressure exerted on the rollers is sustained by the roller which is solidly supported, for instancein Figure 5 the roller to the right of said i ure is being supported by a solid portion of the hoop and stave so that the roller to the left in passing over the edge of the stave is not permitted to tilt and thus break the hoop. In Figure 7 is shown another position of the rollers in which the roller at the left is carrying the load, relieving the tendency to break the hoop at the joint. Figure 8 shows the position of the roller in holding the end of the hoop during the nailing operation. Thus danger of breaking the material is greatly reduced.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a barrel making machine, a mandrel supported for rotation, a yieldably supported pressure member comprising elements cooperating with the mandrel and spaced from each other peripherally of the mandrel and equidistant radially therefrom; and means for guiding the pressure member for right line movement.
2. In a barrel making machine, a mandrel supported for rotation; a grip holding one portion of the barrel material on the mandrel and spacing another portion of the material from the mandrel; a yieldably supported pressure member comprising elements spaced from each other peripherally of the mandrel and equidistant radially therefrom for engaging the material; and means for guiding the pressure member for right line movement, whereby one of said elements will support the pressure member while the other of said elements is traversing the spaced portion of the material.
In a barrel making machine, a mandrel supported for rotation; a yieldably supported pressure member comprising elements cooperating with the mandrel and spaced from each. other peripherally of the mandrel and equidistant radially therefrom; means for guiding the pressure member for right line movement, whereby said member will exert an unvarying pressure on the overlapped ends of material on the mandrel and means for removing the pressure of the said member from the material on the mandreh 4. In a barrel making machine, a mandrel supported for rotation, a pressure member embodying elements cooperating with the mandrel and spaced from each other peripherally of the mandrel and equidistant radially therefrom, yieldable means for admncing the pressure member with respect to the mandrel; and mechanism for guiding the pressure member for right line move ment, said mechanism embodying a shaft mounted to rotate and including a part c0- operating with said yieldable means to adjust the same.
