citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county oi San Francisco and State of Calitornia, have invented a new and useful linprovement the following is a in a Drill Press, of which specification.
My invention relates to improvements in drill presses wherein a variable speed drive operates in con] unction with the spindle `feed lever to automatically rotate thespindle when the same is lowered to the worl, and
to automatically prevent li'urther rotation oi said spindle when raised from said work.
The primary object of the present invern tion is to provide a new and improved variable speed drill press.
Another ob] ect ot the invention is tov pro vide a new and improved1 drilly press which may be more easily operated.
A further object is' to provide a new and improved device .of the character set forth lniving means tor and disconnecting automatically connecting` the spindle from. the rotative power when the feed lever is operated to lower and raise said spindle.

. Referring to the drawings the` numeral 1 is used to designate in general a suitable frame having a suitable depending lug arranged for engagement with the usual supporting post or pillar, not shown.,
,The usual vertically disposed spindle 3 is rotatably and slidably 'mounted in suitable upper and lower bearings l and is provided with a chuck 6 to receive a drill 7. The spindle 3 is rotatably mounted rwithin a sleeve S provided with gear teeth 9 which are engaged. by the teeth ot'a toothed sector 11 rotatably mounted within the traine 1 and provided with a. feed lever 12 by means ot which the sleeve 8 and spindle 3 may be raisedvandlowered to and from the work on y y the table, not shown.

JL suitable bracket 18 is formed integral with thefraine 1 and has a ysleeve 19 rotat ably mountedtherein and rigidly secured to a drive pulley 21.
A shaft 22, whose longitudinal axis is arranged radially to the center of the disc 17 and spindle 3,.is feathered withinthe sleeve 12 and pulley 21 and also rotatably and/slid- 95 alily mounted within a bearing standard 23 and provided. with an upper friction pulley 24 arranged over the disc 17. A vertically disposed member 26 is slidably mounted upon the frame 1 and has suitable bearings 10o therein' to rotatably engage and support the shaft 22 of the trictionpulley 24 and also one end oia shaft 27 having its other end provided with a lower Jfriction pulley 28 arranged in spaced relation below` the upper 105 friction pulley 211 and the disc 17, said shaft 27 being supported, just inside of said pulley 28 by means of a block 29 slidably mounted to move vertically within the standard 23.
rlhe block 29 is provided with a recess 31 engaged by a. lug 32 on a short shaft 33 rotatably mounted between extensions34 on said standard 23. A suitable spring 36 is interposed between the lower end of the block 29 and the frame 1 and tends to normally elevate said block to raise the shaft 27 and friction pulley 28, the latter in turn raising the disc 17 from the braking element 14 and clamping the same against the under side of the upper friction pulley 24.
The shafts 22 and 27, and the pulleys 24 and 28, thereon, are connected to rotate in opposite directions by means of suitable gears 37 connected to said shafts.
The pulleys 244 and 28 are normally held in spaced relation to each other and to opposite sides of the disc 17, and against the tension of the spring 36, by means of a lug 38 secured to one end of the short shaft 33, mounted in the extensions 34, of the standard 23, said lug being normally depressed, when the spindle3 is in an inoperative or upper position, by means of one end of a lever 39 pivotally mounted upon the frame 1 and having its other end engaged by a projection 41 mounted upon the shaft 42 of the sector 1l which is connected to the feed lever 12.
The gears 37 and shafts 22 and 27, with their friction pulleys 24 and 28 respectively, are shifted along the line of their longitudinal axes to engage the different diameters of the disc 17 by means of a shifting strip 43 having a plurality of apertures 44 therein to engage a. lug 46 on the standard 23.
The apertures 44 of the strip 43 are normally held in engaging relation with the lug 46 by means of a flat spring 48 connected at one end tor said strip 43 and having itsr free end passing' through a guide 49 which also slidably engages the strip 43.
In operation, the gears 37, member 26 and shafts 22 and 27, with their respective friction pulleys 24 and 28 are moved to engage the disc 17 at a position which will provide the required speed and the proper aperture 44 of said strip 43 is then moved onto the lug 46 by the tension of the spring 48 to prevent changing of the speed of the disc 17.
By means of the feed lever 12 the spindle 3 is lowered toward the work on the table, not shown, and as the shaft 42 to which the feed lever 12 is secured is rotated, with its sector 9, the lug or projection M is likewise moved from under the end ofthe lever 39 thereby releasing the lug 38 and automatically permitting the spring 36 to move the block 29 and lower friction pulley 28 upward. l
is thelower friction pulley 28 moves upydle;` and for automatically ward it ,first encounters the lower side of the disc 17 and raises the same from the braking element 14 and continuing' clamps said disc against the lower side of the upper friction pulley 24.
As the pulleys 24 and 28 constitute a variable speed driving mechanism in conjunction with the disc 17 it is obvious that the spindle 3 may be automatically rotated by the simple action of operating the feed lever 12 to lower the drill 7 onto the work, not shown.
Vhen the feed lever 12 is operated to raise the drill 7 and spindle 3 the projection 4l will be moved under one end of the lever 39 thereby causing the other end of said lever 39 to depress the lug 38 and move the block 29y downwardly against the tension of the spring 36 thereby releasing the disc 17 from the clamping engagement of the two friction pulleys 24 and 28 and lowering the said disc onto the braking element 14.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the feed lever 12 serves as a controlling means for the motive power as well as lowering and raising the spindle 3 and drill 7 therevon whereby the driving power will be automatically connected to the spindle 3 when the same is lowered, simultaneously disconnecting said spindle from the braking element, and disconnect said spindle from said motive power and bring` the same into engaging relation with the braking element when said spindle is again raised, thereby automatically stopping further rotation of said spindle when it is raised from the work.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is:
1. The combination with a drill press.l spindle and feed lever therefor of a disc feathered to said spindle; a pair of friction pulleys arranged to engage the disc upon opposite sides thereof to rotate the same; means for normally disengaging said pulleys from said disc; and means for automatically connecting said pulleys with said disc when the feed lever is operated to lower the spindle.
2. The combination with a drill press,
rspindle and feed lever therefor of a disc feathered to said spindle; a pair of friction pulleys arranged to engage the disc upon opposite sides thereof to rotate the saine;
means for normally disengaging said pulleys fromH said disc; means for automatically connecting said pulleys with said disc when the feed lever is 4operated to lower the spindisconnecting said pulleys from said disc when said lever is operatedto raise said spindl 3. The combination with a drill press, spindle and feed lever therefor of a `disc feathered to said spindle; a pair of friction pulleys arranged to engage the disc upon opposite sides thereof to rotate the same; means for normally disengaging said pulleys from said disc; means for automatically connecting said pulleys with said disc when the feed lever is operated to lower the spindle; and meansv for moving the friction pulleys relatively to the disc to obtain variable speeds for said spindle.

The combination with a drill press, spindle and feed lever therefor of a brake member mounted adjacent said Spindle; a disc feathered to said spindle and arranged to normally rest upon 'the brake member to prevent rotation of said disc and spindle; friction rollers slidably mounted upon the drill press and arranged to engage and rotate said disc at diderent positions lrelatively to the center of said disc to provide variable speeds therefor, said pulleys being normally disengaged from said disc; and means arranged to automatically connect said pulleys with said disc and to disconnect said dise from said bralre member when the feed lever is operated to lower the spindle whereby said spindle may be automatically rotated when lowered.
5. The combination with a drill press, spindle and feed lever therefor of a brake member mounted adjacent said spindle; a disc feathered to said spindle and arranged to normally rest upon the brake member to prevent rotation of said disc and spindle; friction rollers slidably mounted upon the drill press and arranged to engage and rotate said disc at different positions relatively to the center of said disc to provide variable speeds therefor, said pulleys being normally disengaged from said disc; means arranged to automatically connect said pulleys with said dise and to disconnect said disc from said brake member when the feed lever is operated to lower the spindle whereby said spindle may be automatically rotated when lowered; and for automatically disconnecting said pulleys from said disc and connecting said disc with said brake member when said lever is operated to raise said spindle (jfl (i. -The combination with a drill. press, spindle and feed lever thereforyof a brake `member mounted upon said drill press and adjacent said spindle; a disc feathered. upon said spindle and normally resting upon said brake member to normally prevent rotation of said spindle; rotating friction pulley arranged above said disc; a second friction pulley geared to the first mentioned pulley and arranged below said disog and means operatively connected to the Second pulley and to the feed lever and arrangedy to automatically raise the second pulley and to engage the disc and lift the same from the bralremember and clamp said disc between both pulleys to rotate the disc and spindle when the said lever is operatedto lower the spindle. n
7. The combination with a drill press, spindle and feed lever therefor, of a brake member mounted upon said drill press and adjacent said spindle; a disc feathered upon said spindle and normally resting upon said brake member to normally prevent rotation of said spindle; a rotating friction pulley arranged above said disc; a second friction pulley geared to the first mentioned pulley and arranged below said disc; means operativelyk connected to the second pulley and to the feed lever and arranged to automatically raise the second pulley and to engage the disc and lift the same from the brake member and clamp said disc between both pulleys to rotate the disc and spindle when the said lever is operated to lower the spindle; and for automatically releasing said disc from said pulleys and lowering the same onto the brake member when said lever is operated to raise the spindle, whereby rotation of said spindle may be automatically discontinued when the same is raised from the work.
8. IThe combination with a drill pre-ss, spindle and feed lever therefor, of a brake member mounted upon said drill press and adjacent said spindle; a disc feathered upon said spindle and normally resting upon said brake member to normally prevent rotation of said spindle; a rotating friction pulley arranged above said disc; a second friction pulley gea-red to the first mentioned pulley and arranged below said disc; means operatively connected to the second pulley and to the feed lever and arranged to automatically raise the second pulley and to engage the disc and lift the same from. the brake member and clamp said disc between both pulleys to rotate the disc and spindle when the said lever is operated to lower the spindle; and means for moving the pulleys relatively to the dise to obtain variable speeds for said spindle. y
9. The combination with a drill press, spindle, and spindle feeding means, of a braking member mounted upon said drill press adjacent the spindle; a disc feathered upon said spindle, and normally engaging said braking member to prevent rotation yof said disc and the spindle; driving mechanisrn normally disconnected from the said disc; and means operated by movement of the spindle feeding means for moving said driving mechanism into operative engagement with the disc to rotate the disc and spindle, said engagement being arranged to automatically move said disc out of engagement with the braking member.
