Be it known that I, EDWARD CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementv in Wirebound-Box Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire bound boxes, and the manufacture thereof, boxes of this kind being ordinarily provided with side walls and end walls, and with binding wires extending around the box to increase the strength thereof.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement whereby additional wires are provided, extending crosswise of the wires which are ordinarily provided to flexibly connect together the sections of the blank which, when folded around the end walls, provide the frontand rear sides and the top and bottom of the box.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction and COIllblnations tending to increase the general efficiency and the desirability of a wire bound box of this particular character. i
To these and other useful ends the invention consists in" matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective showing the operation of folding the blank around the heads or end walls, in the construction of a wire bound box involving the principles of the invention. v

As thus illustrated, the blank employed in constructing a wire bound box in accordance with the invention, comprises the four sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 flexibly connected together by the parallel binding wires 5 and 6, these wires being secured in place by staples 7 and the staples for the wires 5 extending 1921. through the veneer or other sheet material from which the sections are made and into the cleats 8 on the inner surface of the blank, whereby the wires are secured to the outer surface of the blank to extend around the box and have their opposite ends twisted together. As shown in Figure 1, the said blank is folded around the heads or end walls9, in the usual manner, and the said heads or end walls are secured in place in any suitable or desired manner, leaving one section of the blank loose to form the top or cover of the box, so that the latter may be filled. In accordance with the invention, however, additional wires 10 are applied to the outer surface of the blank, at right angles to the wires 5 and 6, and these wires 10 are secured in place by staples 11, or in any suitable or desired manner. The ends of the .wires 10, like the ends of the wires 5 and 6,
project from the edges of the blank. When the blank is folded around the heads or end walls 9, the wires 10 are twisted together at the outer surfaces of' the heads or end walls, where they cross each other at right angles as shown in Figure 2, thus co-operating with the wires 5 and 6 to render the box very strong and to make it capable of withstanding strains which the ordinary wire bound box is not adapted to sustain.
While the invention is shown and de scribed in connection with a wire bound box in which the sections of the blank are entirely separate and connected together only by the binding wires, it is obvious that the invention is not limited to the exact construction shown and described.
WVhile the opposite ends of each wire 5 and 6, in the construction of the box, and after the box is filled, are twisted together, it will be seen that, with the exception, of the wires 10 which are applied to each horizontal section of the box, the opposite ends of each wire 10, at least those on the front and rear sides of the box, are connected to the opposite ends of a similar wire before the box is filled, if this is necessary or desirable. It is also obvious, however, that the ends of all of the wires 10 which have their ends-twisted together to tighten them around the box after the latter is filled and closed.
It will be seen that countersunk heads are provided for the-box, when the blanks are folded around the head or end wall 9, o that space is afforded for twisting the ends of the wires together at the ends of the box, each twist occurring a distance from the surface ofthe head or end wall 9 which is set inside of the cleats 8 when the box is completed.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a wire boiuid box, side walls and countersunk end walls forming heads and wires secured'to the side walls and crossing each other a distance from the outer surface of each end wall, with a separable twisted connection in each wire opposite each head.
2. In a wire bound box, side walls, and end walls forming heads, and wires extending across the end walls and over sides of the box, said wires being attached on the sides but unattached on the ends of the box,
' with a separable twisted connection in each wire opposite each head. I
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, in combination with other wires, extending around the box at right angles to said first mentioned wires.
4:. A structure as specified in claim 2, in combination with other wires extending around the sides of the box.
5. A blank for a wire bound box comprising sections flexibly connected together by wires, and other wires extending at right angles to said first mentioned wires, with the ends of each wire projecting from the edge of the blank, whereby the ends of the wires may be twisted together on the box.
6. In a wire bound box, side walls and end walls, and wires extending around the boxand each having its opposite ends twisted to the ends of another wire at the outer surface of each of said end walls.
7 The process of making a wire bound ferentially around the box and attached to the sides thereof, and two-piece wires extending over the sides and across the ends- 10. A structure as specified in claim 1,
said wires having ends which are twisted together a. distance from the surface of each end of the box.
11. A process as specified in claim 7, including the attaching .of ,cleats during the wiring together of the sides of the box in blank form, and attaching the end walls to said cleats.
12. A box blank comprising flexibly connected sections to form the lateral and upper and lower sides of the box, and one or more wires on each section, extending parallel with the meeting edges of the sections, with the opposite ends of each wire projecting a distance from the edges of the blank.
13. A structure as specified in claim 12, and cieats secured along the edges of the blank to form the ends of the box when the blank is folded.
