' BABY HIGH CHAIR.
Application filed November 30, 1921. Serial No. 518,861.
To all whom t maz/ concern." n
Beit known that 1,.JoHN W. FRANZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby High Chairs, of which the following is [a specification. i
My invention has relation to improvementsin baby high-chairs, and consists iny the novel features of construction more fully set; forth in the specification and pointed 'out inthe claims. l The object of the present invention is to provide a high-chair having springs inter` posed between the body of the chair and the legsso that said body may be gently reciprocated when desired. A further object is to provide ahigh-chair that may be con.- verted into a crib at a moments notice by simply readjusting the parts composing the chair body. Further and other advantages will be readily apparent from a detailed description of ,the invention in connection theV accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the chair with the parts shown dotted in their readjusted positionv to form a crib; 2 is a top plan of the chair in normal position; F ig. 3 is a front elevation of the chair in normal position; Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the brackets and rod on which the chair back and table swing.
` Referring to the drawings, B represents the chair base on which the chair body C is supported from suitable springs S. The construction of the base B forms no part ofthe present invention, as that forms the subject-matter of UnitedStates Patent No.
1,377,332 issued to Louis G. 'Franz -on May edge of said back. The foot rest is pivotally.
mounted on the bottom by hinge pins 7, 7 and the back 6 is also pivotally mounted on the bottom by hinge pins 8, 8, said foot rest tom 1 and project downwardly from ,each` vrear corner thereof, thel free end'of each ,l
bracket carrying a tubular head 12 havingl a reduced threadedportion 12l extending inwardly at the base of'vvhich' lis a shoulder y13. A hollow tube 14 provided with a medial grip 15 and having a nut 16 positioned over each end is positioned between the brackets 11, 11. The nuts 16, 16, are provided with a slotted extension on their inner ends, the slots r, 7 of each of which receivel pins 17, 17 projecting from each end ofthe tube 14 and as the tube is rotated4 thenutswill also rotate and be free lto slide back and forth on the tubewhich movement is necessary since the outer ends-of the nuts have right and left handV taps respectively for receiving the threaded portion 12 of each bracket, said brackets alsovhaving right land left threads respectively. y
The back 6 is supported in its normal upright position by a pair of lever arms 18, 18 pivoted at their upper ends to brackets 19, 19 secured to the rear of the back, the lower end of each of said arms 18, 18 being forked at 20, to receive one end of a brace bar 21, the other end of the brace bar be# ing pivotally mounted in a bracket 22 fixed to the back of one side 3 of the foot rest 4. rIhe arms 18, 18 are each'provided with a slot m extending `from the fork 20 upwardly about one-third the length of the arm, and when the arms 18, 18 are connected they are mounted on the extensions 12 of the brackets 11 (that is, this extension passes through slot m) in abutting relation with shoulders 13. Now, when the tube 14 is positioned between the brackets and the nuts 16 are screwed over extensions 12', 12 said nuts will be brought against the arms 18 and when screwed home, will hold saidk arms in place.
A table 23 is normally positioned across the front of the arms v9, 9, said table having 'a web 24 in each upper front corner and one iio arm 25 is provided with a slot p and a bolt 28 is passed through the tube. 14e and the slot p of both arms 25, said bolt having a head 29y at one end, and the other end being threaded t0 receive a wing` nut 30. As the wing nut is screwed tight the lever arms 25, 25 will be drawn tightly against the heads l2, 12 of brackets 11, 1l and secured in place.
From the above it will be apparent that on turning the tube 111 by means of the `grip 15 the arms 18, 18 will be bound tightly or loosened', thus holding the back in place or allowing it to drop down to the position shown dotted (Fig. 1) and by turning the Wingnut 30 the table 23 may be secured in its normal position or loosened so that it mayalso be swung' around to the dotted position (Fig. 1). When the back isgdropped downwardly in line with the bottom 1 the arms will travel forwardly on the extension 12 of the brackets 11 and swing the foot rest 4 forwardly, which may then be raised to form a further extension of the bottom 41. )Vhen the parts are in the positions shown dotted (Fig, 1) they are again locked by tightening the tube 14 and wing` nut 30, and a substantial crib is formed. It will be observed that when the 'chair is converted into a crib the arms 18 form a truss with the bars 21, thus insuring` an absolutely rigid structure. v
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. In combination with a base, a chair body mounted thereon, said chair body comprising a seat, a back hinged thereto and a oot rest hinged to the seat opposite to the back, a pair of brackets fixed to said seat, a pair of lever arms pivotally connected to said back and having a sliding connection 40 with said brackets, connecting` rods between said levers and foot rest, saidv back and foot rest being adapted for adjustment to form a continuation of the seat thereby converting,- the chair body into a bed, the lever arms and connecting rods forming a truss when the part-s are so adjusted, andy means for clamping the lever arms to the brackets.
2. In combination with a base, a chair body comprising a seat and a back hingedg thereto, a table disposed to the front" of and in a plane above the seat, aL pair of brackets fixed to said seat, a pair oflever arms pivotally connected to the back andy having a sliding connection with the brach-Q ver arms to the brackets, and independent means for clamping` the last mentioned lever arms tothe brackets.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.v
