UNITED STATES JOHN A. LAMONT, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDHIES,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SIDE-FRAME AND JOURNAL-BOX COMBINATION.
Application filed April 25, 1921.
Y'o all Vwhom 'it may coneern Be it known that I, JoHN A, LAMUNT, a :itizen of the linited States` residing at .,hicago, in the county of @ook and State )f Illinois, have invented eertain new and iseful Improvements in Side-Frame and lonrnal-Box Combination, ot' whieh the i'olowing is a speeitieation.
This invention relates to a combination of side frame, journal box and an assoeiated addle member mounted thereon.
ne object of the invention is to provide simple, strong and durable journal hox aving separately removable portions where- `y one part may be substituted when a eerain amount of wear has taken place without 'iaking it neCessaiv to substitute a whole 0x.
Another object is to provide an improved mnbination ot' side frame` journal box and lddle theret'or adapted to meet the various erpiirements tor successful commercial use.
hese and other ohjerts are aeeomplisherl y means of the arrangement disclosed on 1e accompanyingr sheet of drawings in hieh- Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal letional view of a railway ear truck em- ;)dving mv invention.
Figure Z is a partial top plan al sectional view of the same lent taken in the planes ot the ne 2-2 ot' Figure 1; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation i my improved journal box.
The various novel features ot the invenon will be apparent from the following seription and drawings and will be par- :ularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures ot the drawings will be noted that I have disclosed my vention in connection with a railway ear nek inelmling a side frame 10 having pocket 11 formed therein tor the recep- )n ot' a journal box 12. The side trame Ls integrally formed therewith depending alls 13 for forming spring receiving pocks 14`r the inner portions 15 ot' said walls `ing the greatest in depth and forming ride Walls by means of which the journal x 12 ris guided in its relative vertieal ovements. The journal box 12 has a main and pararrangeirregular Serial No. 464,115.
journal reeeiving box portion 1G and integrally formed laterally extending baekets 1T on opposite sides thereot'. For strengthening the box and reinforcing the brackets 1T, the latter are ronneeted by an integrally formed tlange 1H extending below the box portion lll.
lin my ropending appliration` Serial No. 422,403 tiled November H. 1920, now Patent No, lfill. granted May 1U, 1921. there is disclosed a wearing plate whieh is mount ed over the journal box and its brackets. Suf-h plate is used t'or wear purposes only.
In in v present applieation, instead ot providin'g a wear plate as such only1 I have provided a pressed or forged steel saddle 21. the middle portion of which is U shaped and eX- tends over the main box portion lt ot the journal box 12 and has laterali)v extending portions 22 whirh are riveted or suitably serured to the bracket 17.* These portions of the saddle direetlyY reeeive the springs 19 and 2li. the upper portions of which are located within the` spring poekets 14 in the side 'trame 10. The saddle 21 has side walls 2li whieh extend from its Hoor portions :22 on one side to its tioor portions 2:2 on the other side in a manner sin-h that the sides ot' the springs 15P and 2H are completelv enelosed therebyY and in a manner sueh that the side frame 1li sets down in between the [lange l as shown partienlarlv in Figure 3 to limit relative lateral movement between the saddle Q1 and the side frame. Relative lateral movement between the saddle L'I and the journal box is prevented by providing the sides of the journal box with recessed portions Q4. best shown in Figure 2. in whieh the inner side walls "J5 of the saddhl are located. lt. is seen therefore that the side trame and saddle areI interloeked with each other and that the saddle and journal box are interloeked with eaeh other in a manner slleh that relative lateral movement between the traine and journal box is limited.
This eomhination provides an arrangement in which the saddle may be removed and replaeed` it' desir-ml` on areount ot' wea:` and also provides an arrangenn'nt wher-eb)Y the parts are interloeked and made strong and reintoreed in a manner to .sueressl'ully meet operating eonditions.
It is my intention to cover all moditieations ot' the invention falling within the spirit and srope of the following claims.
I claim:
l. In a railvvav car truck. the combination of a journal box having brackets on opposite sides thereof. a separate saddle member fitting over said box and brackets. a side frame having a spring receiving pocket mounted within a portion of said saddle. and a Spring in said pocketand mounted on a portion ot' said saddle.
In a railway car truck, the combination of a journal box having brackets on opposite sides thereof. a separate saddle member fitting over said box and brackets, a side trame having a spring receiving pocket mounted within a portion ot' said saddle. and a spring in said pocket and mounted on a portion otl said saddle. said side frame. saddle and journal box having interlocking portions for limiting relative lateral movement therebetween.
3. A journal box comprising a journal receiving portion and brackets on opposite sides thereof. and a separate saddle mounted over said box, said saddle having spring seat portions mounted over said brackets and side walls connecting said seat portions for Jforming enclosures for springs.
4. A journal box comprising a journal receiving portion and brackets on opposite sides thereof. and a separate saddle mounted over said box. said saddle and box having intertitting portions for preventing relative movement between the saine in a given direction.
5. A journal box comprising a journal receiving portion and brackets on opposite sides thereof` the side Walls of said journal receiving portion having` recesses formed therein. and a separate saddle member mounted over said journal box having portions mounted in Said recessed side walls to prevent relative movement between said parts in a given direction and having spring receiving portions mounted over said brackets.
6. A journal box comprising a journal receiving portion and brackets on opposite sides thereof. the side walls of said journal receiving portion having recesses formed therein. and a separate saddle member mounted over said journal box having por- JOHN A. LAMONT.
