`eliiliroanra QUICK-CHANGING NEEDLEILAT-E' HOLDER.
Application filed July 18,
To all 'whom it may cmwem.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bishop, in the county of Inyo and -Stategof California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quick- Changing Needle- Plate Holders, of which the followingV is a specification. l
As in my U. S. Patent No. 1,375,383, my present invention is an improvement in attachments for shoe stitching machines, in the nature of a needle plate holder which permits the changes to be made from a leather or knife needle plate to a rubber or lip needle plate as may be requiredwithout the detachment of screws or the like, and has for its object to improve the construction of my said patent. y In the drawings which accompany and .20 form part of this specification 1- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment. Fi re 2 is an approximately4 central vertical ongitudinal sectional view through the same.
Fi re 3 is a perspective view of the combine gauge and needle plate securing meinber, looking toward the under face thereof. Figue 4 1s a top plan view of the needle lip late, the knife needle plate being shown in igures 1 and 2.'
While my present improvement has reference only to the combined auge and needle plate securing member, I ave, in the accompanying drawing, illustrated the same in applied osition upon the cap, and therefore I will, m the following description make brief reference to the cap construction and the needle lip and knife needle plates.
The cap is indicated by the numeral 5 and has secured on its under face, at its front end a plate 6 that is provided with threaded openings which register with similar openings in the dat top of the cap. Throug these openings pass the threaded Shanks of screws whose kerfed heads are received in spaced openings in the knife needle plate 6,
as well as in similar openings in the lip needle plate 7 when the same is attached to the cap.
The top of the plate 5 to the rear, but 1n a line with the bolts which secure the plates to the cap has an opening therethrough, and through this opening passes a bolt member 8. The head of the bolt is in contact wit nut 9 that .rests onjIt-he top o h of tools and without 1921. serial No. 455,4;94.
the `vfac-e of thel top .o f
the cap 5, and its threaded shank-.is engaged by a binding v the cap. The nut 9 isreceived in a longitudinal groove 1l onthe .under face 4of, armetallic bar 12, 60 the said bar lbeing provided with an elonoated'slot 13 0-alengthequalling that of t e g'roov e, butof. aj width less than that'of the groove,
4the width= of theslot being approximately equal to the cross sectional di- 65 ameter of the bolt 8,.,while that of the slot being equal to he cross sectional diameter ofthe nut VTl'lus, both the nut and the boltprovide guide members for the bar 12. The barg12, o n its flat vunder face and at yits forward endvis formed with a recess 14 the ,latter entering from its outerend and rom one tof its lsides and'communicatin'g with 'the groove. The recess y l terminates in a straight wall 15 at one of the sides ofthe bar 12. The 75 recess i4; receives .thereinthe plate V6 or the plate-L17, and the shoulder provided by the walll is in eontactingeng'agement with one ofthe'ed 'es of either 'of the said plates 6.011.711-,The3ar 12 atv its forward end is 80 4ro Nded, asat 16, the 'said end being reduced and the rounded sides thereof extending to the sides pro er of the bar. Also the for ward end of t e bar is of a materially greater thickness than the remainder of the said bar, 86 the upper face ofthe bar gradually decreasing in thi knees from its said forward end to its rear end, the last 'mentioned end being substantially feathered.
The bolt 8 is engaged by a winged nut 17 90 which is designed to exert a frictional contact Vwith the upper bar of the bar 12. The improvement provides an effective housing for the plate 6 or 7 the wall or shoulder 15 assisting the heads of the screws, which, 95 for distinction, are indicated by the numeral 18 in preventing a side movement of the said plates on the cap, while the elongated h slot through which the bolt 8 paes permits of the guide end of the bar 12 being 100 properly adjusted with respect to the needle openings in the plates 6 and 7. The front thickened and rounded end of the bar provides a leather guide, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the in- 106 vention appertains, and with my improvement 'the plate 6 or 7 may be quickly attached or removed from the cap of the stitching machine without the requirementthe removal of the 110 Serews 18.,\b being; undsretcedthetf only the heads of the screws are received in the openings in the said plates, or in other words.. tiretV 110.', binding Minn hlwen the screws and plates ,that when the bar is moved off of either of the plates, the latter maybe lifted .ham Minna?.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. In testimony whereof I a x mysigna- RJOBERT E. GOSNEY.
