Application filed January 24, 1922. Serial No. 531,465.
To all 'whom t 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tillamook, in the county of Tillamook and State. of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in swings and has particular reference to a rocker swing.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a swing of the character described which will afford to the occupant a combined rocking and' swinging motion for a relatively long period when the swing is started, with but a minimum amount of effort being required on the part of the operator.
Another object of this invention is to provide a swing of the character described which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture7 strong, durable and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the swing constructed in accordance with my invention, and
F ig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, with portions of the tubular spacing elements being Shown in section.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the reference characters A and B represent two substantially triangular frames, each com prising a base 5 which has connected thereto the lower extremities of an inclined standard 6, in turn secured to each other adjacent their upper extremities by cross bolts 7 and 8. These frames A and B are penetrated and connected by a cross rod 9,
and cross rods 10 and 11, all equipped with the usual locking nuts on the extremities thereof. The cross bar 9 is positioned adjacent the upper extremities of the standards between the cross bolts 7 and 8J the cross bar 10 is fastened so as to support beams 11 and 12, extending in parallelism to the base bars 5, while the cross bars 11 are disposed adjacent the lower extremities of the standards 6. The respective cross bars are encircled by spacer tubes or pipes 13 which have their respective extremities contacting with connective washers, in turn contacting with the inner faces of the frames A. and B.
From a consideration of Figure 1 of the drawing it will be observed that the beams 11 and 12 have suspending therefrom yokes or cradles 141- which are straddled by flanged shives 15 in turn supported by bifurcated brackets 16 connected at their lower extremities to vertically disposed hanger beams 17 for supporting the same.
F rom this construction it will be apparent that the beam 11 has disposed beneath the same a single pair of shives or rollers 15, while the beam 12 has another pair of the said shives or pulleys disposed therebeneath. In order that the respective pairs of shives may act together, I have indirectly connected the pair disposed beneath the beam 11 by a cross tie 18 and connected the pair disposed beneath the beam 12 by a cross tie 19. This indirect connection above referred to, is made by securing the respective extremities of the tie-rods to brackets 16. These tie rods 18 and 19 function tomake the shives act in unison.
A conventional foot rest or platform 2() is suitably secured to the lower extremity of the beam 17, while a combined seat and back 21 is positioned above the platform and secured to the beams 17 for accommodating the occupants of the swing.
As illustrated the cradles 14. are made slightly curved so that when the momentum of the swing carries the swing past center in either direction. the said. swing will rock back again. .It will be manifest that by the provision of the supporting cradles, the shives adapted to travel thereon, the tierods connecting the same, and the beams for supporting the seats, I have provided a unique swing which furnishes to the occupant or occupants a duplex action, viz: a combined rocking and swinging movement.
Thus the swing and its supporting frame when tightly secured assures a rigid construction whereby as the momentum of the swing is increased the shives turn and roll in the cradles causing a back and forth mo tion in conjunction with a swinging motion. lIt is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape,
size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub- 5 joined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim In a device of the character described, the combination With a pair of spaced triangular l0 frames, of a beam mounted on each of said triangular frames, a curved cradle suspended from each of said beams and on each end thereof, a flanged sheave supported from each of said cradles, a cross-tie between the sheaves positioned beneath each of said beams, and means for supporting seats from said sheavesj substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aix my Signature.
GEORGE W. COOK.
