Beit known that I, J ULIUs E. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Edgewater in the county of Ber en and State of New Jerse have invente a new and Improved Dri Press, of which the ,following is a full, clear, and exact de scri tion.
yinvention relates to adrill .press or machine of a simllar character, and aims' to provide certain new and useful improvements in connection with this class of dev1ce.
It is well understood that considerable diiiculty has been experienced in connection with drill presses and similar `machines in that the samevare limited according to their size, to relatively small classes of work, thus a medium size machine of the character stated is capable of being used in, connection with only such articles as are capable of being accommodated uponvits table, or within the distance existent between its supporting column, and working head. 1 Thus the customary machine shop, where but one type of each machine is available, is incapab e of handling wide ranges of work in that the machines are unable to acc0mmodate the same.
With this in mind my present invention aims to provide a drill press or machine of similar character which shall be constructed in its main elements -in the usual manner, but which shall. embody certain requirements of construction renderingI the machine capable of accommodatingA an)1 size of work.
Another object of this invention is the construction of -a devicej of the nature specified which shall be enabled to accomT plish the purpose brought out in the ceding paragraph by means of relatively simple provisions.
With these and further objects in View, reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings which illustrate one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which;

as has 'been indicatedat 18 encircles the collar. 16 and is formed with an extended portion 19 provided with -an interiorly -screw threaded openingcapable of being engaged by the screw-threads of a shaft 2O rotatably mounted adjacent the supporting column 10. l
Thus it that the distance between the table and working head may be varied b the gear 21 which, meshing wit thegear 22 secured to the shaft 20eects a rotation of the latter.- This will in turn cause the extended portion 19 ofthe rin 17\ to act as atraveler in that -the same wi travel longitudinally of the shaft 20, and by virtue of the fact that it is secured to the collar 16, i will cause the latter also to move in a verl tical plane, thus varying the distance between the u per surface of the table 12 and the hea 13, permitting of articles of various sizes tofbe accommodated irrespective of any certain limits of their height.

Thus allbut the largest sizes of work are ,capable of being operated upon and with a view of accommodating even tlns latterl class of work it will be seen in Figure 3 that4 the supportin vcolumn-1() is in the nature of a sleeve slida ly mounted upon a cylinder a ly secured to the platform 14 and referably has its upper end extending wit in the base of the same.
'It will be obvious that a rotation'of the stem 24 will result in a `movement of the same with respect to aj-cylinder ,23,1 this obi viously resultingin a verticalmovement on the part of the platform 14, and it will be seen, with a' view of avoiding rotation of of the stem 24 in viewof the excessive weight -of ,they platform 14 and elements carried thereby, and with a view of overcoming this diiiiculty itwill be'notedthat the stem 24` has a geai` 27 secured to its upper end, which gear is'engaged by a corresponding gear 28 4secured to a shaft 29, aiworm wheel 30 bein e attached to the latter, and co-operatin wit a worm 31 so that the parts will at a times be locked. The .worm =31 is attached. to a shaft 32 driven b -gearing 33 associated with a shaft 34, an accordingly, in my pres-v ent invention, I attach tothe driving me cha'v nism of the press apair of ars 35 and 35 roviding clutch faces'whic 4 are capable vof eing enga d by means, of either faceof -a double cutch 36 keyed to the driving shaft, the latter being capable of being shifted by any suitable type of lever 37.
