DEVICE FOR CONNECTING ELECTRIC CABLES 0R CONDUCTORS WITH OTHER PARTS.
' Applicationvled December 20, 1918. Serial No. 267,597.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, GUGLIELMO GIOVAN- NoNr, subject of the King of Italy, and resident of rllurin, Italy, have invented certain new and useful .improvements in Devices for Connecting Electric Cables or Conductors with Other Parts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a device )l0 for connecting electric cables or conductors A vwith other` conductors or parts of any kind,
this device making easy and quick the connecting and disconnecting operations.
The device accordingto the invention may be used for many useful purposes as, by way of example, for connecting with the sparking plugs `of explosion engines the wires or cables feeding the electric current to said plugs. d
The annexed drawing shows by way of example some constructions of the device according to this invention, and
Figure 1 shows the connecting applied to a sparking plug for explosion engines;
Figure 2 is a side view of a device to an enlarged scale Figure 3 is the central section of the same;
Figure 4 and Figure 5 is a central section ofa further modied construction.
As shown in. Figures 1, 2` and 3, the device to shows a modified construction,
comprises a socket l made o f a conductingmaterial and provided, near one end, with a side opening 1 said socket is encircled by an insulating sleeve 2 and inside the same socket is mounted a sliding block or piston 3 acted on by a spring 4 which has one of its ends in contact with said block whilst the opposite end of the same rests against the head of the wire or conductor 5 this head.
being preferably formed by ay cap 6 of conducting material which is clamped on sleeve 2 b means of anut 7. l.
n the sleeve 2 is mounted to slide a ring 8 which is connected with the sliding block or piston 3 by means of a` transverse pin 9 5o travelling through y slots 1() provided in sleeve 2 and socket 1; by grasping and moving backwards said ring 8 the slidingblock or piston may be displaced from the posidevice as tion shown on Figure 3 against the opposite action of spring 4.
The front surface of the sliding block or piston 3 and the opposite surface of the socket 1 must be suitably shaped to engage the end of the part or member to which the cable or conductor is to be connected, in order to prevent the device from being unduly removed from the same.
ln the case shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 it is assumed that the device is to be connected with the spherical head of the sparking plug electrode; therefore the front surface of the sliding block or piston 3 is provided with a recess 11 and the opposite wall of socket 1 is provided with a cut away portion 12 so as to form a seat for said spherical head.
In this case, that is when the part to which the cable or conductor is to be connected is formed with a spherical head, the connectionl forms a ball joint, the cable or conductor being free to -be swung around said head.
. The device according to this invention may also be used in the case in which the sparking plug or other'part or member is provided vwith a usual electrode that is with a screw threaded stem or spindle. ln
part to be connected with the cable or con-- ductor provided with the device be engaged between the socket and sliding piston or block with such an adherence as to prevent said part from being released under a Stre acting along the axis of said part.v
The operation of the device is very easy and quick. 'lo eect a connection it is sumcient to remove the sliding block or piston 3 from the end of the socket 1 by grasping the ring 8 and pulling it beck, and te insert :the part into the space left between said sliding block or piston and socket end; on
releasing the ring 8 the spring 4 carries fordone away with.
An example of such a construction is shown in Figure 5 in which the socket l is encircled as above described by an insulating sleeve 2 and has inside it a sliding block or piston 3 operated by a spring 4 resting against the nut 7 and acting to push said sliding block or piston against the opposite surface of the socket. YThe conductor or cable 5 is arranged to slide through `a hole of nut 7 and is connected With said sliding block or piston 3 by means of a screw '15` engaging an eye in the conductor or cable Wire and screwed into a hole, 14 of the tail 13 projecting backwardly from the sliding block or piston 3.
By this construction the sliding block or piston 3 is moved backwardly by exerting a pull on the conductor 5 and is restored into its engaged or contacting position by the spring 4.
What I claim as my-invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. An electrical connector for making connection with a device provided with a head, comprising a tubular member having an opening proportioned to permit the introduction of the head Within the tube, av
block slidable Within the tube, a spring to hold the block yieldingly in engagement with the head when introduced Within the tube and means surrounding the tubular member and connected to the block to Withdraw the same from engagement With the head, substantiallyas set forth.
2. A device for making electrical connection with a member having a head, said device comprising a tube having a key-hole slot the larger portion of Which is proportioned to permit the introduction of the Y head Within the tube, a block slidable' Within the tube adapted to bind the head Within the smaller port'ion of the key-hole slot, a
spring adapted to hold the block in such binding engagement, a sleeve slidable upon the exterior of the tube and means connecting the sleeve with the block.
Signed at Turin, Italy, this 11th day of October, A. D. 1918.
