the count and Oak ark, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ll/foldin Machines, of which the following is a ful clear, and exact description.
l The invention relates to molding machines and more particularly to that type in which the molding machine and sand-elevating and feeding mechanism therefor are mounted on a truck tojsupply themachine with aandfrema pile on the foundry floor.
One object of the invention is toprovide an improved portable molding machine in which the mechanism .for propelling the machine over the pile .of sand is notmounted on, but iscontrollable from, thetruck.
Another object of the invention is'to provide an improved propelling mechanism for a truck on whichthe molding. machine and sand-elevator are mounted;
A still further object of-the'invention is to pnovicle improved, propelling mechanism which is adapted to individually-or-Simultaneouely operate. a pluralityfof machines over the moldingmachine room floor.

The invention is exemplified in a foundry equipment comprising a series of trucks 4 arranged transversely of one another, each adapted to be propelled over the floor of a molding-room on .'which the sand is arranged in-piles or wind-rows. Each truck comprises a frame made up of sides 5 and tubular cross-members 6 and 7 which are rigidly secured to the frame-sides in suitable manner. The truckis movably sustained byrear carrying wheels 8 which are cross-connected by a shaft 9extending through the tubular member 6 and a pair of front carrying-wheels 10 suitably'journalled on the frame-sides 5'respectively. A moldiilgmachine 11 of any suitable type is securedto a base 12 which is secured to the tubular members 6 by U-bolts 13 and to a bracket 14 which is secured by U-bolts 15 to the tube 7. The molding machine mounted upon the truck may be of any suitable cons'truction, so a detailed description thereof is not herein given. The molding machine illustrated is of the construction set forth in an application filed by us March 14, 1921, Serial No. 452068, to which reference may be had for a detail description thereof.
.A' cross-shaft 16 is journalled in the frame-sides 5 and is provided. with spiral conveyor-blades 17 and 18 which areadapted "to disintegrate the sand on the floor and convey it inwardly to a central elevator which comprises an, endless chain 19 and buckets 20 which are adapted to scoop up the sand fedthereto by the conveyors 17 and 18 and to discharge the sand into a chute 21 from which-it isdischarged into the conveyor 22 which receives the sand for delivery to, and
use in, the molding machine on the truck. This conveying and elevating mechanism serves to keep the molding machine continuously supplied with sand from the pile on the floor. The lower portion of the chain 19 asses around a sprocket 24 on the shaft 16 and its'uppe'r end passes around a sprocket 25. on a shaft 26mounted in bearings 27 on a standard 28 which is secured to'the bracket 14. An electric-motor 29 mounted on the truck drives a gear 31 on the conveyor-shaft 16 through a pinion on the motor-shaft which meshes with an idler 32 which is fixed to a pinion 32 which meshes with gear 31.

An eccentric 44 for each drum 33 is fixed to the shaft 40 and a pawl 45 is operatively connected to each eccentric.
Each pawl 45 is adapted to operate one of the ratchets 38 and is positioned normally so it willbe disengaged from. the ratchet, its free end resting on a. roller 46 so-that the operation of the pawl will not operate its ratchet. The path of movement of each pawl is controlled by an electric-magnet which comprises a solenoid 48 andan armature 49 33 when desired.

When, and so long as the coil 48 is energized, the armature 49 will hold the pawl 45 elevated to cause the ratchet 38 and drum 33. to be advanced step by step from the shaft 40. A switch 51 suitably mounted on the truck is electrically connected by suitable flexible conductors 52 and 53 to the coil 48 so that the operator of the machines can easily control theadvance of the machine from a point adjacent the truck. Each operator can individually control his machine independently of the others. The invention exemplifies propelling mech anism for a portable molding machine which is mounted on the molding room floor and which is easily controlled by the operator of the machine which is simple in construction and is adapted to operate a plurality of machines from a single motor.
