To all :w from it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK H. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Triming Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to trimming machines for use in the manufacture of bootsv and'shoes, and has special reference to such machines for trimming the projecting edges of the vamp and lining of a lasted shoe preliminary to the inseam sewing operation.
' Commercial machines of this type are usually provided with a reciprocating trimming knife that worksacross a shearing face atone end of a guide roll, the other end of the guide roll being arranged to engage the sole of the shoe to act as a distance gage to determine the height of the trimming cut. The guide roll is driven and its peripheral surface is frusto-conical and knurled so that it may act to feed and'guide the work and to turn up the portions of the edges of the vamp and lining thatproject inwardly from the line of lasting to present such portions to the trimming knives. Hth the use of this guide roll, however, it is necessary for the operator to exercise a high degree of care in order to guide and feed the Work properly and, also, because of the width of the roll and the restricted area at the toe of a pointed toe shoe, the guide roll is unable, in many cases, to act properly on this portion of the edges of the vampand lining,
Various guiding devices have also been proposed for these machines for turning up the portions of the edges of the vamp and lining thatproject outwardly from the line of lasting to present these portions to the trimming knives, but the devices heretofore proposed for this purpose have not proved entirely satisfactory on certain classes of work. One of these prior devices comprises a plow "shaped member formed on the forward end of a forwardly'spring pressed sliding carrier and arranged: topress against the work in advance'of the trimming knives.
One objection to this device is that as the shoe is turned in trimming about the toe of a pointed toe shoe, there is danger of the edges of the vamp and lining being brought away from the plow so that the plow cannot act effectively on them at this point.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved machine for trimmingthe projecting edges of the vamp and lining of a lasted shoe preliminary to the inseam sewing operation, which overcomes the disadvantages above described of the prior constructions while retaining all of the advantages.
With this object in view, a feature of the present invention comprises the provision, in a trimming machine having means for trimming the projecting edges of the vamp and lining of a lasted shoe, of a member adapted to rock so as to follow the contour of the shoe in advance of the trimming means for presenting the outwardly projecting edges of the vamp and lining to the trimming means. This feature of the in vvention is particularly advantageous in trimming the toe of a pointed-toe shoe, as the rocking of said member enables it to maintain better control of the vamp and lining in advance of the trimming means while the heel of the shoe is being swung about the trimming means. Preferably, said member is plow shaped, and in order that it may keep such control of the vamp and lining it is preferably pivotally mounted bet-ween 1ts ends on the forward end of a work-guiding device which is yieldingly urged against the edge of the shoe, although this specific construction is not essential to the broader features of the invention.
Another feature of the present invention comprises the provision, in a trimming machine of novel means for guiding and trimming the projecting edges of the vamp and lining of a lasted shoe, said'means comprising a trimming member having a portion constructed to actv as a channel guide to guide the work and also having a portion to act on the projecting edges of the vamp and lining to present them to the trimming means. It will be apparent that the operation of said member in this manner enables the operator to guide and feed the work without difiiculty. The illustrated construction has the additional advantage of affording temporarily an abutment 11 to engage the toe end of the shoe so'as to retard the feed past the field of trimming while the heel end is being swung to reverse the shoe end for end. This abutment is arounded hump formed on the carrier 10. In conjunction with the trailing end of the follower 24L it forms a recess into which the toe settles during the swinging of the heel, but from which the toe glides gradually as the heel is about to complete its swinging. The abutment does not project so far as the follower, and consequently remains out of contact with the shoe excepting at the toe end. Furthermore, since a sharp toe will enter the recess to a greater extent than a blunt toe it will be retarded to a correspondingly greater extent by the abutment. and in this respect the device automatically controls the speed of feeding the toe past the field of trimming so that the more diflicult toes will move less rapidly.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts illustrated, and described, it is to be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential except so far as specified in the claims, and may be changed or modified without departing from the broader features of the invention.
The nature and scope of the present invention having been indicated and a machine embodying the several features of the invention in their preferred form having been specifically described, what is claimed is 1. A trimming machine for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes having, in combination, means for trimming the projecting edge of the vamp of a lasted shoe, and work-guiding means comprising a carrier and a follower carried by and pivotally connected to said carrier, said follower be ing formed and arranged to bear on the outer surface of the material to be trimmed, so as to guide said material tov said trimming means and so as to be rocked to various poe sitions by variations in the contour of said material, and a spring arranged tourge said carrier toward the work.
2. A trimming machine for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes having, in combination, means for trimming the projecting edge of the vamp of a lasted shoe and working-guiding means comprising two abutments in tandem relation the leading one of which is formed and arranged to bear on the outer side of the mate rial to be trimmed, so as to guide said terial to the trimming means, said abut ments being separated to provide a space to receive the toe end of the shoe as the latter is turned, the other one of said abutments being arranged to engage the toe end but to clear the shoe when the sides of the latter are running on said leading abutment.

9. A trimming machine for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes having, in combination, means for trimming the projecting edge of the vamp of it lasted shoe, a
work guiding device movable in a plane substantially parallel to the sole, and a member pivotally mounted on the work-guiding device adapted to adjust itself to the contour of the'shoe for presenting the projecting edge of'the vamp to said trimming means.

A trimming machine foruse in the manufacture of boots and shoes having, in combinatiomineans for trimming the pro-' jecting edge .of the vamp of a lasted shoe, and means arranged to engage the projecting edge of the vamp'so as to present the latter to said trimming means and comprising a member pivoted between the ends of its work-engaging face to enable the work to rock it in opposite directions. A trimming machine for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes having, in combination, means for guiding and trimming the projecting edge of the vamp of a lasted shoe comprising a roll having a shearing face at oi ie end and a guiding member at the other end arranged to engage the root of the channel of the sole, and a trimming knife working across said shearing face.

A trimming machine for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes having means for guiding and trimming the projecting edge of the vamp comprising a roll having a shearing face and a flange formed and arranged to engage the root of the chan ne] of the sole, and a trimming knife worting across said shearing face.
13. An upper-trimming machinecomprising trimming means, means arranged to guide the shoe relatively to said trimming means by engagement with the channel of the sole, and means arranged to guidethe surplus uppermaterial to the field of trimming and keep the channel-flap out of said field.
14. An uppertrinn:ning machine comprising trimming means, a channel guide, and
means arranged to separate the surplus upper material from the channel-flap so as to guide the former into the field of trimming.
15. An upper-trimming machine comprising trimming means, a ch annel guide, means arranged to limit the bending moment of the channel flap as raised by said channel guide, and means arranged to bend-the surinsane? plus upper material away from the channeltlap so as to guide it into the field of trimming. v V p I 16. An upper-trimming machine comprising trimming means including a shearing roll having a channel-guiding portion and a portion arranged to separate the surplus upper material from the channel-flap so as to guide the one into and keep the other out of the field of trimmin p 17. An upper-trimming machine comprisingcooperative shearing members one which is a roll arranged to engage the inner side of the material to be trimmed, said roll having a head formed and arranged to enter the channel of the sole, andhaving .a neck of relatively small diameter connecting said head with the shearing portion, said head, neck and shearing portion forming "a groove to receive the channel flap of the sole.

A trimming machine for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes having, in combination, a rotating shaft, a guide roll having a shearing face at one endand having its other end of relatively small diameter and directed toward the surface of the sole of a shoe placed in the machine to determine the distance from the surfaceof the sole at which the vamp should ..be trimmed, a stud formed integral withrthe roll and screw-threaded into anapertnre-in the end of said shaft, anda trimming knife working across said shearing face. An upper-trimming machine compris ing trimming means, including a trimming member formed and arranged to. engage the sole in the channel,to guide the. surplus up,- per material to the field of trimming, to determine the closeness of trimming, .andto keep the channel-flap out of the-field of trimming. An upper-trimming machine comprising cooperative trimming membersone of which. is a driven roll having a knurled por tion for acting .on the materialto be trimmed, and having a smooth head, and a neck of relatively small diameter connecting said head with .said knurled portion, said head being formed and arranged to act as a channel guide and said neck providing a groove to receive the channel-flap of the sole.
21.. An upper-trimming machine comprising a trimming member, and a work-guide formed and arranged to straddle the channel-flap of the sole so as to guide thefworlr partly by engagement with the channel and partly by engagement with the surplus up per material.
