ELECTRIC SJVITCH.
Application filed November 24, 1919. serial No. 340,212.'
To (JZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, G-nonon J. MEUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee. in the county of iililwaukec and State of ll'isconsin, have. invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Edwitchcs. of which the following is a tall, clear. concise, and exact description. reference being had. to theaccompanying drawing. forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to electric switches and more particularly to actuating devices therefor.
in switches employed for the transmission oi signals in hospitals and the like it is desirable to provide switch actuating means eadily operable by the patient to transmit he signal summoning the attendant and to 'ovidc against subsequent accidental opration or the switch resulting in discontinuation ot' the call prior to arrival ot' the attendant.
The present invention has among its objects that of providing actuating mechanism readily applicable to existing switch struc- 'tures without material alteration thereoi for providing the aforementioned operative tures.
Another object is that of providing for a. push and pull switch having a single op erating member, means enabling actuation of suchinember to operate the switch in either sense fron'i a given location and in one sense only from other locations.
Other objects andadvantagcs will hereinai'ter appear.
in the accompanying drawing wherein is illustrated an embodiment of the invention,
Figure l is a side clevational view thereof;
. a perspective view illustrating etails.
I to the drawing, the same illusa switch mechanisn'i indicated gen- 1 having a single push and pull opmember Said switch niechanisn'i to dash mounting within an ordiswitch with n the outlet box and also secnring the l b, pla'te in position. in the usual. nanner. Said lugs are lurther PiOl'tlPtl with ofiset portions 7 and 8 serving to space the switch inwardly away from the face plate a sutiicient distance to permit :tull reciprocation of the operating member 2 without restraint by said face plate.
The projecting portion of the operating member is reduced to provide a shoulder 9 and is terminally screw threaded to receive a nut 10.= A yoke 11 is mounted upon said reduced portion of the operating member being clamped against the shoulder 9 by means of the nut 10. A push button menu ber 12 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the upper end of said yoke and adapted to" extend through a suitable opening 13 in the face plate 3 to provide for actuatiouot the switch in one sense only. The opposite end of said yoke is bent to provide a shallow transverse groo ve 14: and is further provided with a longitudinal slot 15 the inner end of said slot having an enlarged portion 16 coinciding with said groove and adapted to receive the terminal portion. of a chain 17 or other suitable flexible connection extending through a second opening 18 in said face plate to provide for actuation of the switch in the opposite sense only.
A. hollow internally tapered horn or guide 19 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured within the opening 18 of said plate to surround the chain 17 for facilitating traverse of the latter through the plate and insuring a substantially straight pull upon the yoke irrespective of the angle from which the pull upon the chain is exerted. The push button 12 is further adapted to coactwith the sides of the opening 13 for guiding the movable switch parts and insuring rectilinear motion thereoi under all conditions of peration and particularly when actuated by a pull upon the chain.
In practice the last link of the chain 17 is slipped through the contracted portion of the slot 15 and located within the enlarged portion thereof, the sides of the yolre adjacent said contracted portion oi the slotbe ng thereafter spr g irward to prevent w hdrawal of the chain.
The manner of operation of the aforedescribed mechanism may be brietly outlined as follows; assuming the switch to be so connected as to control the transmission of call signals in a hospital or the like, the chain extending within easy reach of the patient and being the only element Within the patients control. A. single slight pull upon the chain. serves to operate the switch in appropriate sense for initiating the-call si nal, whereas subsequent actuation of the 1 produces no further eilect upon the A on, whereby such signal will continue to ansmitted pending actuation of the itcn in the opposite sense by means of the cash button which will ordinarily occur only the switch is again subjected to control by the patient by means of the chain in the manner aloredescribed.
"What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
