1 0 @122 whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK VViLLIAr r lVlAN'lON and JAMES NATHAN MANTON, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of 105 Elizabeth Street, in the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 111 Printers Galleys, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements 1n printers galleys as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawings that form a part of the same.

The invention consists essentially of the novel features of construction whereby the type is locked in predetermined position on the galley by means of one or more racks adapted to be secured to the walls of the gal ley and adjustable in relation to graduations of measurement carried by said galley.

The objects of the invention are to provide a form of galley on which the type may be properly measured and aligned and securely locked in position prior to transfer to the form, to reduce to a minimum the time required in type setting and generally to provide a printers galley which will be inexpensive to construct, simple of adjustment and efiicient.

In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the device, a portion of one of the side walls being broken away to disclose the method of securing the adjustable rack thereto.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of one of the racks, portions thereof being broken away to disclose the interior construction.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bar adapted to interlock with the rack.

Figure 4 is a cross sectional View showing a modified means of constructing the side walls of the galley, said section being taken through a portion of galley and side wall corresponding to the line A-A of Figure 1.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.

Referring to the drawings 1 represents the tray bottom which in practice may be of any desired shape but which in the drawings is shown as being of rectangular shape in plan, said tray being provided with a comparatively shallow end wall 2 and opposing side walls 3 and 4:, all of said walls preferably being substantially square in cross section.

The top sides of the walls 2, 3 and 4: and the open end of the tray are provided with graduations 5 to correspond to the standard measurements in printing.

The inner faces of the walls 2, 3 and a are provided with pin openings 6 spaced in accordance with the graduations 5.

7 is a rack slidable over the surface of the tray between the side walls 3 and 4t, said rack being provided at one end with one or more rigidly disposed dowel pins 8 adapted to be inserted in the desired opening or openings 6 and at its other end being pro-' vided with a bolt 9 slidably mounted in a longitudinal opening 10 in the rack, said bolt having an enlarged body portion 11 disposed wholly within said opening and spring held normally to its outermost position by means of a spring 12 disposed between the inner end of said body and the end of said opening.

13 is a lever extending through a slot 14 in the enlarged portion 15 of the rack 7 and pivoted as at 16 and having its lower end 17 extending through a slot 18 in the body 11, said lever being for the purpose of operating the bolt 9.

The enlarged portion 15 of the rack 7 is preferably extended outwardly to project past the wall 3 in a finger 19 when the rack is in position on the tray and the lever 13 is preferably turned outwardly parallel with said finger forming finger grips adapted to facilitate the adjusting of the rack.

The top side of the rack: 7 is notched transversely for the greater portion of its length forming slots 20.

21 is a bar of right angle cross section having a filling 22 at one end thereof from which projects a pin 23 and adapted to be inserted in one of the openings 6 in the end wall 2, said bar terminating even with the open end of the tray and being adapted to be locked rigidly in position by inserting one of its sides in a. slot 20.

The top side of the bar 21 is provided with graduations corresponding with the graduations on the side walls 3 and 4.

Tn Figure 4 of the drawings a modified form of construction is shown in which the walls of the tray are provided with metal linings 24 screwed or otherwise secured to said walls and provided with openings corresponding to the openings 6. This form of construction permits of the renewal of the linings when the Walls of the openings 6 have become worn.

In the use of this invention the amount of space to be occupied by the printing is first deter-minedand a corresponding space on the galley is then measured off by plac t the lever is then released permitting the bolt to enter the opening 6 in the wall 3. Whatwe claim is A printers galley comprising. a tray having an end and side walls, said walls being provided with metal facings having pin openings in the inner faces thereof, said walls also being graduated on the top sides thereof, a rack having rigid projections from one end fitting openings in one of said walls, a bolt slidable in an opening in the other end of said rack and spring held to its extended position and adapted for insertion in an opening in the opposing side wall, said rack being enlarged above said bolt and projecting endwise in a finger adapted to extend over the corresponding side wall, said lever being pivoted in a slot in said enlarged portion and having its lower end extending into a slot in said bolt, said rack being notched transversely along its top side, and a bar, right angle in cross section, and having oneof its sides adapted for insertion in one or other of said notches and having a rigid projection from one-end fitting an opening in said end wall.
