Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MOSES E. TRUE, OF OAKFIELD, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,598, dated October 14, 1873; application filed September 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I,'MosEs E. TRUE, of Oakeld, in the colmty of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists, essentially, in providing an adjustable anvil for saw-setting implements, whereby the saine tool may be adapted to setting different sizes and lengths of teeth.
The drawing represents a side elevation of my invention.
As these tools have been made heretofore, the anvil was placed upon the main stock, and the gage and tooth rest upon the short swinging or pivoted lever. The axial point of the latter necessarily occupied a position so far from the line of the two rest that the tendency of the pressure upon the tooth, in the act of setting it, was to draw it away from the anvil. I have found that by reversing the arrangement ofthe location of these points the efect is also reversed, so that the tooth is firmly held in place by the pressure of the tool closing upon it.
A is the main stock, to which the levers are y pivoted. B is the hand-lever, which operates the secondary or anvil lever O. This lever is forced into the position of the dotted lines by means of the spring s, which also throws the lever B into the open position. The lever C is mortised at the outer end, as indicated by the dotted lines at c. The anvil D is made separate, and provided with a iiat or square shank that is fitted to be moved 'easily in the said mortise at c, where it is secured by a clampingnut, J. The tooth-resti is formed upon the stock A, as shown, and is made in the usual form. The rest R, for the blade of the saw, is also formed upon the stock A. The anvil D is readily detached, as may be seen, by removing the clamping-nut J. By this means, different-sized anvils may readily be substituted, so as to adapt the same imple ment to setting saws having very coarse or very ine teeth.` The adjustmentof the tool to saws of different thickness, and to the amount o f set desired to be given, is in the usual manner, by means of the set-screw S.
The implement is applied and manipulated in the usual manner.
The dotted lines represent the tool in a partially-opened position.
What I claim as my invention is The anvil D, arranged adjustably upon the i pivoted lever O, in combination with the xcd points or rests R and t' upon the stock A, as shown and described, for the purposes set forth.
MOSES E. TRUE. Witnesses:
A. K. TRUE, DANIEL Woon.
