CARL RICHARD J'EBNBERG AND 1VIODESTE EDWARD LARSON, OF INDIANA HARE A. METZGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AND OR, INDIANA, ASSIGNORS TO STANDARD FORGINGS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR DRAFT BIGGI'NG.
Application filed November 30, 1921. Serial No. 518,863.
T 0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, CARL RICHARD JERN- BERG, Monns'rn A. Mnrzsnn, and EDWARD LARSON, citizens of the United States, said Jernberg and Metzger residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and said Larson residing at Indiana Harbor, Lake County, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Draft Rigging, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the art of draft rigging for railway cars, and more particularly to the means for connecting the yoke and the car coupler.
One of the objects of our invention is to produce a forged steel yoke and forged steel yoke heads so designed as to be relatively cheap to construct and of reat strength,
and yet be as light as possib le. That is to say,'being so designed as to have abundance of metal where needed and less metal where same may be spared, without impairing the efficiency of the device as a whole.
Another object of our invention is to produce complementally engaging parts on the yoke and on the yo e to be quickly and readily assembled in operative position) and when so assembled, shall be so interlocked as to make-in effect a substantially solid union of the two.
To secure these objects and the desired advantages therefrom so that the yokeand head may be applied to known and standard draft rigging units and car couplers, has
not been a matter of easy accomplishment in forged steel, but are secured by our invention. To this end, our lnvention consists in the devices and combination of devices herein illustrated, described and more par ticularly pointed out in the appended claims.
' In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a planview ing the shank of a car coupler and surrounding a conventional draft gear unit. f
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, and showing in addition Supportingjstraps, a strike post and the end beam or channel of a car construction. I
of a device embodyfaces of the yoke and yoke the section belng .cated by the dotted C indicates heads, so designed as ourinvention, showing it attached to Fig. 3 is a perspective view, enlarged, of the yoke proper,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one of the yoke heads.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the yoke and yoke heads, showing one yoke head seated and the other in the act of being seated.
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail showing the relation of the engaging complemental surhead, the sections lhdddfrltil being in the plane indicated by the dotted line 6-6 of Figs. 1 and 7'.
Fig. 7 is a similar view of the same parts,
' takenon the plane indiline 7-7 of Figs. 2 and 6.
The yoke is indicated as a Whole by the letter A-and the yoke head by the letter B. the shank end of a conventional car coupler;-D, D parts of a draft gear unit, and E stops usually attached to parallel sills of a car construction and against the inner end of which the part D of the draft gear unit abuts. F, F, are horizontally disposed supporting straps of the car structure, usually attached beneath the sills of the car. Gr is a conventional strike plate upon the end beam or channel H, and J is a key or pin of the M. C. B. type.
The draft gear unit D, D may be of any conventional type; .they may, for example, be of the construction shown in-the Christy Patent No. 1,263,374, of April 13, 1918, where the housing of the member D is hollowand contains springs acted upon by triangular shaped wedges 03. As this forms no part ofthe present. invention, reference may be had to the said Christy patent for further description; it being understood, however, that there is relative movement between the parts D and D, both on the is-greater than the width of the strap 1.
At each side of tl1eend 4 is" ahook members 5. In rear of the end 4 and opposite each hook member 5, each edge 6 of the strap-1 is providedwith a laterally projecting lug 7 havingan 'inclined' bearing surface: '8': Between the bearing surface"'8 and :the extreme end 9 of each hook member 5 is a recess indicated at 10. This recess -is defined by the bearing surface 8 of the lug 7, the
the parts 'becomefengagech'as shown-clearly in Figsul, 2, 6 and"? In this engaged position-,--it will be noted that the inside flat surfaces of the-'heads'B rest -:firm-ly--u-pon the parallel surfaces'or walls 11, 11, of the: yoke,
and! the 'flat'surfacesmr walls 16; 1.6 rest firmly between the parallel inside wall surfaces of the yokeends 4, 4.
It will also be noted that when the yoke headsB andtheyo'kes are thus united, the
outside or marginal parallel surfaces 22,22,
of the yoke hooks 5, 5, and the top surfaces 23 of the headhooks 15, 15, arein alignment and"'com'e nicely within: the parallelinside' 'surfaces of the stop E, or otlier-conven- 80 tional' Structurewhich mayrbe employedas *1 part of thetlraft gearrigging;
We recommend that .our improved hooked"? I yokeand "yoke head be fabricated by"'-f-org-"=' ingand havedesignedthe details of con 85 struetion to that' end." 5 While some slight 3' modifications-may be made without'depart-"- 'ing from our invention; yet"fromsuccessfu-l experience we "recommend the form shown?0 tal position, ratherthan "in a vertical'p'osi 'bodylngunnecessary metal, as availablefor tion as isthe case withsome devices'of this general character. v
In order to connectthis-yokeflA withthe): shank of the car coupler :6, two heads B and 'the 'pin or keyrJ are required:.'"Each yoke head 'B is a plate"provided withra transverse aperture 'or key-way-14. The? key-way 14 is in what maybe termedthe'." forward. portion of thehead'B and is an a I elongated slot"correspondi ng' in contour" withi'the cross-sectional area of the key; J the latter 'being'shown in position in Figs-1 and 2. 7
Each yoke'head B is provided with 1a pair of 'hooked' members 15 adapted *to engage the " hookmembers 5, 5, of the yoke;j".eaclrf being provided .with a straight engaging; wall 16 "and a curved surface.- 17, thelatter terminating in a hook pointer end'18." *It v will be noticed that'the"yoke' heads"B are:
of somewhat greater thickness than the-" thickness of the yoke members '1", but area-of substantially the" same thickness as the hooks 5 of the yoke. By reducing, the thick v.ness somewhat at the *outer-margin-19, 19,"
and in the center 20, back ofv the-key wayf 14, --considerabletmetal is "saved r-withoutjweakening the heads. Thesurfa'ce'sor walls" 16, 16. areparallel-,*as shown.
In Fig 5 we have illustrated 'tlie 'method,
of interlocking the hooks 5 ambit-5.fwrhwv head '13 is brought 'into; juxtapositiomdts forwardend tipped so 'that'thecurved sur faces 17," 17, may 'be -brou'ghtinto -cont'act with the curved surfaces'12,-1 2,of tlie hooks" 5," thenraised with a 'sortof rocking move ment until the hack edgefl-or' margin ifzl of the head contacts with thelug $7,: whei' eupon=- by further' movementin thesa-me' direction? ful function of pr'operlydistributing the" relatively cheap LCOSt of production; as not liable to be readily damaged or broken use, and" as possessing the very desirable-usemetalso as to *successfullytake 'care-'of-'the stresses and strains of car'service.

The combination of a yoke and-'a pair of yoke "headsfthe forward- ,j end of each of the yoke arms being enlarged and provided with a rea rwardly "turned-, outwardly ex 4 tending, integral hook member, and each-" yoke head being provided with a forwardly turned hook member on its top a-nd bottom margin, each hook memben-havinga surface complementalto the surface of the yoke ;f. hook memberwith which it GIIgflgGSfWhGIl the p'arts are assembledkznd a horizontally i" disposed key way in eachyoke head'adapted to receive a 'keyto lock the yoke' heads and connected yoke/to a car couplerw 2; 'Thecombin'ation of 'aflyoke'and' a pairof yoke heads having comp'le'niental "and "in: ter engagin'g surfaces and 1 means for lock ing sameto coupler, each'arm of said yokefi having a widened-forward end provided with two? rearwardly directed hook members and an-integral lug on each side margin; of e'ach yoke? arm' opposite- *the' hook member: a
