WAGON BODY.
Application filed May 23,
T 0 all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN HnnMANsoN, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Minden, in the county of Kearney and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vagon Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon bodies and more particularly to means for securing upward box extensions to the sa1ne,one object of the invention be ing to provide simple and efficient means whereby upper box extensions may be so secured in place as to provide ventilating space in one or both. sides of the box of the wagon body, when it is desired. to employ the wagon for transporting hogs or other live stock, and to so construct the securing means for such upper extensions that the lower edges of the latter may be clamped tightly on the upper edges of the lower or main body sides when the wagon is to be employed for carrying such material as grain.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims,
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing an application of my improvements. l igiufe 2 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 1 with the side body or box menrbers shown in sec tiou. Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 1 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 1 Figure 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Figure 1; Figure 8 is a perspective View of the plate 12, and Figure 9 is a perspective view of the plate 18.
in the drawing, I have represented a portion of one side of a wagon body box at 1 and an upper extension at 2.
The means employed for securing the extension 2 in place and for spacing the same from the main body member 1 to provide ventilation, includes a rod 3 having a threaded lower end 1 to receive a nut 5 provided with a handle 6 for securing a clamping in clamped position.
1922. Serial No. 563,161.
The devices employed for spacing the box extension from the main side portion of the wagon box comprises two plates 12 and 13, the former having an eye 14 freely mounted on the rod 3 and the plate 13 having two eyes 15 "freely mounted on said rod. One end of the plate 12 is provided with a lateral flange or shoulder 16 to be engagi-id by the upper box extension 2 and one end. of the plate 13 is provided with a flange or shoulder 17 to engage the upper edge of the main body side or member 1, and said plate 13 is provided with a finger 18 to engage one face of the side member 1 and prevent movement of said plate when the parts are lhe plate 13 is provided with a plurality of holes 19, any one of which may receive a pin 20 projecting from the plate 12 and in this manner the spacing devices may be adjusted in accordance with the ventilating space desired between the main box side 1 and the box side extension 2. The plate 12 is provided with a lateral flange 21 and at the juncture of this flange with the main portion of the plate, a slot 22 is provided to receive a plate 23 which is secured to the extension member 2 and projects downwardly therefrran,-the lower end of said plate 23 entering the slot 22 when the parts are clamped in. position and the engagement of the upper portion of the flange 21 with the lower portion of the plate 23 will prevent turning of the plate 12 on the rod 3.
From the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that when the spacing devices are positioned as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the nut 5 is tightened, the upper box extension 2 will be clamped tightly in position and ample ventilating space will be provided between the body side 1 and said upper box extension. It will also be observed that by reason of the adjustability of the spacing devices, the ventilating space may be enlarged swung aside toward the outside of the wagon body as will be readily understood. Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of thecharacter described,
the combination with a rod, means for clamping the lower portion of the same to the lower portion of a wagon body box, a hook plate adapted to engage the upper edge of a box extension, and a lateral projection on the rod to engage said hook plate, of spacing devices mounted 'on said rod and adapted to be interposed between the upper edge of a main body box and the lower edge of a box extension, whereby a ventilating opening is provided in the side of the wagon body box.
2. In devices of the character described, the combination of a rod, means for clamping the same to the lower portion of a wagon body side, a hook plate to engage the upper portion of a wagon body side extension and connected with said rod, and adjustable spacing devices mounted upon said rod so as to be disposed between a main body side member and an extension memher.
3. In devices of the character described, the combination with a rod, means for clamping the same at the lower portion of a wagon body side, a hook plate to engage a wagon body side extension and having adjustable connection withsaid rod, of spacing devices mounted on said rod and com prising two plates adjustably connected together, each plate having a flange or shoulder to form abutments for the wagon body side and wagon'body side extension respectively, one of said plates having a lateral flange and a slot, a plate to be carried by the side extension, and enter said slot and the other plate provided with a depending liuger to engage a face of the wagon body side.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
