To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL F. GLooKnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to combination bed and lounges and has for its main object the provision of a sofa which has the unique characteristic of being a useful and ornamental article of furniture in a parlor or sitting room, convenient and comfortable to sit upon and, when the user may desire, can be quickly converted into a lounge or bed. The lounge becomes a valuable aid to the household at a time when guests arrive unexpectedly, and who must have quarters and shelter hurriedly assigned to them.

Another object is to provide a lounge which has compartments embodied within itself in which bedding and similar material. can be stored when it is not being used for sleeping or reclining upon.

lhe above and other objects will become apparent in the description to follow, in which characters of reference refer to the like-named parts in the drawings.

Referring briefly to the drawings Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this invention with one of thearm-rests in position to have the head of a person rest thereupon.

Figure 2 is a front elevational view with the back cushion in position to be used as mattress.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the back cushion member showing the mattress retaining means and hinge members for rotating the cushion from vertical to a horizontal position.

Figure 4; is a side elevation of the lounge and shows the various storage compartments.

Figure 5 is a similar side elevation showing the bolt for locking the rotatable arm in the vertical position.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary section somewhat enlarged, taken on the line 66 of Figure 5 and shows the arm rest limit stop in detail.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 and 10 indicates rear upright legs having the members 11, at the top, and 11, near the lower ends, connecting the two.

The front leg 12 is fixedly secured to the rear leg by the arm rest 13 and panel board 14:.

Front legs 12 and 15 are connected by the member 12. The leg indicated at 15 is rigidl connected to the frame so as to form an integral part thereof.

The arm rest 13" and panel board 17 surmounting one end of the frame is hingedly connected to front leg 15 and'rear leg 10 by a tubular member 18 which extends thruout the length of the panel 17 and is securely fixed thereto. A pin 18' fixed to the tube engages corresponding hole at the upper end of the leg 15 while the other end of the tube swivelly engages an extension of the bolt 19, thus permitting rotation of the arm rest 13.

Stops are formed at the lower end of member 16 by forming inclined surfaces at one of the corners, the latter being adapted to engage a corresponding inclined surface on member 15. It is tobe understood that when the lounge is not used as a bed, the panel 17 and arm-rest 13 are always in the vertical position, in which they are retained by a common form of spring catch 21 secured to leg 10 engaging a pin 22 fixed to the arm rest 13. As this means of securing readily yields to slight pressure, an additional and positive means is provided by a locking bolt 23 engaging a yoke 2 1 secured to the leg 10. If it is desired to tilt the arm-rest 13', bolt is disengaged and pressure is exerted on the panel outwardly. After passing the spring catch it will fall to the position indicated in Figure 2, in which it can be used as a head rest. A pillow 25 is provided for the head to rest upon.

A seat cushion extends thruout the length of the lounge and is rotatably mounted thereto by the hinges 27 engaging stud bolts 28 located on opposing end frames. Access to a compartment 29, having a flooring 30 composed of wire mesh, is gained by rotating the seat cushion 26 upwardly. The compartment 29 can be used to store sundries, the wire mesh flooring forming an excellent means for ventilating the chamber.

A back cushion composed of a plush fabric covered frame 81 is provided with elastic tapes 32, spanning the adjacent long sides of the frame 31, the latter being adapted to retain an ordinary bed mattress 33 in position in the frame and prevent the same from falling out when said frame is in the position shown in Figure 1. The back cushion 31 can be rotated downwardly on hinge member 34 fixedto the opposing ends of the back cushion 31 by screws 36, and hingedly engaging the stud bolts 28.

Openings 35 in hingemember 3d are provided to permit disengagement of the entire back cushion from studs 28 after which the cushion can be detached from the lounge for purposes of cleansing.

Attached to the rear frame is a fabric covering 36 designed to make the lounge ally mounted between lower rigid elements and adapted to be rotated, a seat cushion on said frame, there being a compartment beneath said seat cushion, a back cushion normally disposed between the end panels, hinges connecting said back cushion, with said seat cushion, said hinges having a slot therein adapted to permit disengagement of the entire back cushion from the lounge, and a mattress secured in said back cushion adapted to be disposed over said seat cushion when in a horizontal position.

2. An article of furniture comprising a frame having raised corner supports, a back, a fixed end panel, a pivoted end panel, a tube secured at the lower edge of said pivoted panel, a pintle fixed in one end, of said tube engaging said frame, a bolt passing through the opposed member of said frame engaging the opposite end of said tube, spring fingers on said frame, a pin fixed in said pivotedpanel engageable by said fingers, and a sliding bolt for positively maintaining said pivoted panel when in an erect position.
