KNIFE WIPER.

To all whom it may concern:

it known that I, CHARLES F. YVILLsIE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, Spokane Qounty, State of VVashing-ton, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife Wipers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to pro vide an improved device for cleaning or wiping the trimming knives for the slugs delivered from linotype machines, and consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed. 111 the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a cleaning or wiping device embodying my invention showing its position in the linotype machine, certain parts of the latter known as the vise frame and the frame proper of the machine being indicated. diagrammatically in dotted lines. Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, taken at a different angle and with the dotted portion omitted and Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the plunger which carries the cleaning blade and of a straight arm guide portion attached thereto.

The particular object of this invention is to provide a cleaning or wiping device of the character mentioned, whereby the wiping blade is held uniformly in contact with the edges of both of the knives throughout the length of the blades and means for providing such contact. My said device comprises a plunger 10 consisting preferably of a rod rectangular in cross-section and is reciprocally movable in suitable guides disposed on the inner face of the vise frame of a linotype machine.

In the drawings one of said guides is indicated at 11, another of said guides comprises a plate 12, secured to the lower end of what is known as the first elevator of the machine, which is indicated at 13-. The

' guide 12 engages a straight arm 11; secured to the plunger 10 by means of an offset- 15 so constructed as to clear the machine construction. The straight arm 14 is provided with an adjustable collar 16. The upper portion of the straight arm 14 is threaded as at 17 in order that the collar 16 may have a threaded adjustment as well as a screw 18 adjustment for greater certainty. A wiping blade 19 is mounted at the top of the plunger 10 and secured thereto by means of screws or rivets 20. The said wiping blade comprises a metal plate made of any suitable material and which may be of any shape suited to the purpose. In the instance illustrated the said wiping blade consists of an L- shaped plate, one arm of which extends laterally outwardly from the plunger and travels over the cutting edges of the knives 21, the other arm being parallel with the plunger 10 and secured thereto.

Pivotally secured to the vise frame 22, as at 23, is an arm 241 carrying at its free end. a roller 25 which engages the outer surface of the plunger 10. Secured to the vise frame 22 as at 26 and to the arm 24, as at 27, is a coil spring 28 of the proper tension to firmly hold the wiping blade 19 in uniform and rigid contact with the cutting edges of the knives 21. The elevator 13 is actuated by a rocking arm 29 of the machine, the latter bemg connected with said elevator by means of a link 30.

The operation of the device is as follows:

As the elevator 13 rises the plate or arm 12 will rise and come in contact with the collar 16 and thereafter a continued upward movement of the elevator 13 will serve to raise the straight arm let and thereby the plunger 10 to the upper limit of movement of the elevator. The elevator 13 then makes its downward movement and when the plate or arm 12 comes in contact with the offset 15, the straight arm 14 and thereby the plunger 10 will be carried downwardly. After proper allowance has been made for lost motion the wiping blade 19 attached to the plunger 10 has passed up and down in frictional contact with the cutting edges of the knives 21 the full length thereof. By means of the connections for operating the plunger 1.0, the movements of the plunger are properly timed relatively to the ejection of slugs through the slot between the trim ming knives 21 and during the downward strokes of the plunger 10, the wiping blade 19 will cleanse from the edges of the trimming knives 21. the shavings of type metal adhering thereto.

The roller 25 mounted as shown maintains the proper frictional contact between the wiping blade 19 and the knives 21 and the guides 12 engaging the straight arm 14 connected with the plunger 10 as shown prevents the plun erlO and the wiping blade 19-fro1n tipping or wabbling, thereby maintaining a uniform contact with the edges of both knives 21 throughout their entire length.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A. knife, Wiper for type machines having a pivoted vise frame carrying a rm-irnocable part and. the trimmii'ig knives, and having a rocking arn'i for actuating said reciprocable part a reciprocable plunger rectangular in cross-section and carrying a wiper blade adapted. to travel over the cutting edges of said trimming knives an arm pirotaliy at tached to said Vise frame and. carrying a roller at its free end engaging the outside surface of said plunger contiguous to said Wiper blade and held in contact therewith by a coil spring and causing the Wiper blade to bear upon the edges oil the trimming knives, a connection between said arm and said reciprocable part for actuating the reciprocating plunger and means engaging said arm near the bottom thereof for preventing the plunger and Wiping blade from tipping or Wabbling.

2. In a knife Wiper for type machines having a pivoted vise frame carrying a reciprocable part and the trimming knives and having a rocking arm for actuating said recipli'o'cable part, a reciprooable plunger rectangular in cross-section and carrying a \viper blade adapted to travel over the cutting edges of said trimming kn ives, a straight arm paralleling the plunger and attached to the bottom thereof by an offset in the plunger and having an adjustable collar near the top thereof, a connection between said straight arm and said recipro'ca'ble part for actuating the reciprocating plunger and means contiguous to the Wiper blade for holding the Wiper blade and trimming knives in frictional contact with each other.
