Having described the invention what is claimed as new and useful is:

LA protective apparatus for banksand similar institutions consisting of a bullet proof curtain oi' sliieldlocated adjacent to the plane of a screen or partition iii which is arranged a-tellers window.y and movable into position to bar or obstruct said window, iiieansfor normally maintaining said curtain oirshieldinA an rinoperative position, and means-for` tripping or releasing the curtain retaining means, the said retaining means consisting of a rock shaft having supporting arms for bearing the Weight of the curtain or shield and ratchet mechanismfto'r maintainsaid .trip mechanism consisting of yieldingly impelled drums? flexibly lconnected with the M pawls of said' ratchet mechanism,'-and il treadle actuated'pawl for `maintaining the` drums in their normal positions;
