F. G. PROCTER, JR. NOSE PIECE FOR EYEGLASSES. APPLICATION FILED AUG.24,1921.

UNITED STATES FRED GRANT PRQCTER, JR., F PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
NOSE PIECE FOR EYEGLASSES.
Application filed August 24, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRED (i. Pnoo'rnn. Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and improved Nose Piece for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in eyeglasses, and it pertains more particularly to a nose-piece therefor.
It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide a nose-piece construction in which a bridge of greater strength may be had.
It is a further object of the invention to so construct the nose-piece that it provides a device of this character neater in appearance than ordinary mountings, there being nothing visible when in use except the smooth lines of the bridge and the guard arm.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means whereby the springs of the resilient mounting may be protected against injury, and, at the same time, provide for adjustment of the spring without removal of the guard arm.
It is a further object of the invention to construct a mounting in which the guard arms may be placed either upon the upper face or the lower face of the bridge.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to'the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of eyeglasses constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail rear elevation thereof;
is a disassembled detail perspective view of a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken on the line 4t-i of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the reference character designates the bridge of the nose-piece, and said ln'idge is provided upon its ends with lens mounts 11 of any preferred form or type. At the point of juncture between the ends of the bridge and their respective lens mounts 11, the bridge is enlarged as indicated at 12,
Serial No. 494:,925.
and in said enlarged portion a recess is formed. Extending through the Walls of the recess is a screw 15, said screw having threaded engagement with the bridge 10, as iiwndicated by the reference character 16 in Mounted within the recess 13 and surrounding the screw 15, is a coil spring 17, one end of which engages the lens mount as indicated by the reference character 18, the other end depending below the lens mount as indicated by the reference character 19.
Mounted on the lower end of the screw 15, is a guard arm 20, and said guard arm is adapted to engage the depending end 19 of the spring 17, in order that said spring may act to rotate the guard arm about the screw 15 upon which it is pivotally mounted. It is understood that there are two guard arms, one pivotally mounted at each end of the bridge, and upon the inner end of each of said guard arms is carried a nose grip 21. the other end of each guard arm being pro vided with an operating member 22. By this construction, it is apparent that the spring 17 is mounted within a. housing formed'by the'recess 13, and is protected from injury and yet, at the same time, is so mounted as to effectively perform the work expected thereof.
In the modified form of the invention, the reference character 30 designates the lens mounting, and 31 designates the bridge. The bridge 31 is formed with an enlarged end 32 and said enlarged end 32 is recessed as at The lens mounting 30 is provided with a flat face 34 adapted to be secured to the flattened end 35 of the bridge31 by means of solder or the like. In this form of the invention the reference character 36 designates the guard arm, and said guard arm is provided with a tubular extension 37 projecting through openings 38 in the bridge. A bolt 39 passes through this tubular extension and has threaded engagement as at 40 with one of the openings 38 in the bridge piece in order to retain the parts in assembled relation. Surrounding the tubular member 37. is a coil spring 38, one end of which engages the guard arm 36, the other end engaging the bridge in order that as the guard arm is rotated about the bolt 39, the spring will be placed under sufficient tension to cause the nose grips carried by arin carrying a nose gripping member ad- 10 jacent the open side of said. recess in im mediate contact with said spring and actuated by the latter, a screw passing through said guard arm said'recess'and spring and having threaded engagement with the upper 15 Wall of said recess.
