In machines of this type, the carriage is adapted to occupy diderent lateral positions on the frame of the machine, with the result that, when the usual cover is put over the base, upon which the machine is mounted, the carriage may obstruct the closing of the cover, unless it is centrally positioned.
In such machines, it is usual, in addition to the lateral movement of the carriage, to provide means whereby the same may be shifted with respect to the frame, and this invention further provides means whereby the carriage may be locked against shifting, as well as being centered and locked against lateral movement.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a portion of an Underwood portable typewriting machine, showing the present invention applied thereto.

The machine, to which the invention is shown as being applied, includes a carriageframe 1 and a platen 2, journaled in said frame by an axle 3, which passes through an end plate 4 of the carriage-frame. The carriage is adapted to be fed along by the usual escapement-Inechanism. a portion of which is shown in Figures 2 and 8, said escapement including a wheel 5 and a pinion 6, which pinion is engaged by a rack 7, supported by the carriage-frame and adapted to be moved to disengage the pinion 6 by a finger-piece 8 (Figure The carriage is mounted to travel on track-members, consisting of an upper track-member 9, forming part of the carriage-frame, and a lower track-member l0, suitably supported so that the carriage may be shifted, as is customary, for changing from one case to another, the particular mechanism for effecting such case-shift not bein shown. The usual hand-wheel 1.1 is provided, by which the platen may be rotated by hand, said wheel being fast upon the axle 3.
rIhe usual cover 12 is provided, said cover having sides adapted to reach to the bottom of the base 13, andi, by reason of the fact that the cover iits snugly, it is essential that the carriage be properly centered before the cover is put on. It is also desirable to lock the carriage against lateral movement after it has been properly centered, and it is preferable also to lock it against shifting movement. Both of these functions are accomplished by the device forming the present invention.
For this purpose, one of the Vcarriage-rails, and preferably the lower one, has pivotally connected thereto a lever 14, pivoted intermediate its ends, said lever being bent up at one end, as shown at 15, said bent-up end portion normally registering with a slot 16- in the lower' carriage-rail. There is also provided a slot 17 in. the upper carriage-rail, and, when this slot registers with the slot 16, the lever is permitted to engage both slots, to thereby lock the carriage against lateral movement. Means are provided for urging the leverv14 to position to lock the carriage, and, preferably, this means is in the form of a spring which may be put under tension at any lateral position of the carriage, so that thereafter the carriage may be moved along until the slots in the carriage-rails register, at which time the end 15 of the lever 14 will enter both slots and effect carriagelocking. Preferably, the spring referred to, which is shown at 16, is/connected to a pin 1T"L on the end of the lever 14. the other end of the spring engaging a pin 18, carried by a setting lever 19, which is pivoted to a bracket 20, secured to the lower carriagetrack 10. The pin 18 is so positioned on the setting lever 19 that the spring acts to pull upon one side of the pivot-point of said setting lever when the same is in one position. and upon the other side of the pivot-point when the lever is in another position, thereby holding the setting lever in either position, as
well as acting to urge the lever 14 to locking position. l
In order to lock the carriage against shift- 'ing movement, the lever 19 is provided with a hook 21, Which engages under a bent-over portion of the typewriter-frame 22, so that, when the setting lever is in position to tension the spring 16a, to urge the locking lever 14 to carriage-locking position, the setting lever engages the hook 21 with the frame 22 to also lock the carriage against shifting movement.
In order to unlock the carriage, the lever 19 is rocked from the position shown in Figures 2 and 4 to the position shown in full lines in Figure 1, and, in moving to this latter position, a lug 23 thereon engages the under side of the lever 14 and positively moves the same to unlocking position, the lever 19 and the lever 14 being detained in this position by the spring 16a. The setting lever is manipulated by a hand-knob 24, and its positions indicated by the letters L and U, as shown in Figure 2, the letter L indicating locked position and the letter U indicating unlocked position.
It Will thus be seen that a simple construction is provided wherein the carriage is locked against both lateral and shifting movements, and it will also be seen that, by reason of the lever 14 being urged by springtension to locking position, said lever may be set with the carriage in any lateral position, so that, when the carriage is moved to a position at which the slot 17 registers with the slot 16, the lever 14 will snap into locking position.
Variations may be resorted to Within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im rovements may be used without others.
aving thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a laterally-shiftable paper-carriage, of means for centering said carriage and locking it against lateral movement, and means for putting said locking means under tension to become effective to lock said carriagewhen the same is properly centered.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame, of a typewriter-carriage movable laterally thereon, upper and4 lower carriage-track-rails, a lock-lever carried by one of said rails, said lever havinga portion adapted to engage a slot in the other rail, and means for putting said lever under tension in any lateral position of said carriage, said lever engaging said slot only when said carriage.l is centered to thereby lock the same against lateral movement.
3. In a typewriting machine. the combination with a frame. of a typewriter-carriage y movable laterally thereon and shiftable with respect thereto, upper and lower carriagetrack-rails, a lock-lever carried by one of said rails, said lever having a portion adapted to engage a slot in the other rail, means for putting said lever under tension in any lateral position of the carriage, said lever engaging said slot only When said carriage is centeredj` to thereby lock the same against lateral movement, and means for locking the carriage against shifting movement, brought into action by the means for putting said lever under tension.
4. InI a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame, of a typewriter-carriage movable laterally thereon and shiftable with respect thereto, upper and lower carriage-track-rails, a lock-lever carried by one of saidv rails, said lever having a portion adapted to engage a slot in the other rail, a setting lever pivoted adjacent one end of said lock-lever, and a spring connecting said end of said lock-lever and said setting lever, said spring put under tension by movement of said setting lever, and acting to urge said lock-lever to engage its opposite end with said slot in the other carriagerai 5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame-,of a typewriter-carriage movable laterally thereon and shiftable with respect thereto, upper and lower carriage-track-rails, a lock-lever carried by one of said rails, said lever having a portion adapted to engage a slot in the other rail, a setting lever pivoted adjacent one end of said lock-lever, and a spring connecting said end of said lock-lever and said setting lever, said spring put under tension by movement of said setting lever to one position, and acting at this time to urge said lock-lever to engage its opposite end with said slot in the other carriage-rail, said setting lever acting to release saidlock-lever when moved to another position.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination With a frame, of a typewriter-carriage movablelaterally thereon and shiftable with respect thereto, upper and lower carriage-track-rails, a lock-lever carried by one of said rails, said lever having a portion adapted to engage a slot in the other rail, a setting lever pivoted adjacent one end of said lock-lever, a spring connectingsaid end of said look-lever and said setting lever, said spring put under tension by movement of said setting lever to one position, and acting at this time to urge said lock-lever to engage its opposite end with said slot in the other carriage-rail, and a lug carried by said setting lever, ada ted to engage and move said look-lever w en said setting lever is moved to another position.
7.
