In accordance with a feature of the invention, the illustrated eyeletsetting tool has a clenching shoulder formed and arranged to pass through a lacingv hole Ain one or more layers of an article of work so as to clench an eyelet between two layers of the article. Said tool is provided with an `abutmentbehind the eyelet-clenching or4 :upsetting shoulder. In the illustrated embodiment ofthe invention, the abutment behindcthe upsetting shoulder of the eyelet-clenching tool and the said upsetting'shoulder are relatively adjustable lengthwise of the clench-i ing tool. In the illustrated construction the said abutment is also slidabl'y moi'iute'l and spring-pressed toward the work to give it a considerable capacity tork seli-accoinmodation to different work thicknesses.
Also in the illust-rated embodiment ofthe invention there is a contracted or reduced portion immediately behind the upsetting shoulder of the eyeletfclenchingtocl. This construction renders the end ofathe eyelet barrel less likely to catch inthe under surface of the upper layer during the setting operation. v
- The present invention is herein illustratedl as embodied in a machine of the typeshown,
ttor example, in United States Letters Patent No. 603,023, granted April 26, 1898 on application of Seymour Field, which machine is organizedy to provide for punching the eyelet-receiving holes by a tool separate tromthe .eyelet-settino' tool. It is to be understood, however, that theinvention in various of its aspects is not limited to embodiment in a machine 'of this type.'
For a full understanding oi the present invention reference is to be had to the fol` lowing' description and thel accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in perspective showing a setting device embodying the invention and a punch as they are arranged in an eye `leting machine, to 'ether with a piece of work being operate upon;

When the setting device is used in a ma chine of the type shown in said Field Patent 603,023, the lacing holes are punched by a separate ypunch provided for that purpose, the setting device being utilized to 'feed the work from the punching locality to the eyelet-receivinglocality,as a step in each cycle of operations. It isV unnecessary to illustrate the construction of the machine itself, and for the sake of clearness it is omitted lfrom'the drawings, The machine is pro, vided with a support for the work and with a punch which is operated preliminarily` to theinsertion of the eyelet to form the eyelet hole. As shown inFig. l the punch K is located atthe right hand side of, the setting device A. When the punch has performed its function it is retracted so that the setting diemay be moved to the right, inserted in the hole and thenzmoved to the left to 'feed work and register the hole with the lower die E.
The upsetting die consists in a curved up` setting shoulder 1 of such shape as to cause the end ,of the eyelet barrel forced against it to be spread or flared outwardly, and is of such diameter that it may be passed through one or `more layers so as to ciencb the eyelet between two of the layers. An eyelet-setting device consisting of means for setting eyelets in one or more of the layers of a plurality of layers of material, comprising an upsetting device having a slightly projecting outwardly and upwardly curved setting shoulder combined with an anvil cooperating therewith, said upsetting device being arranged to spread and progressively turn the end of the eyelet over on said material between the said layers.

In a machine for setting invisible eyelets inone or more of the layers of a plurality' of layers of material, a die for inserting an eyelet through a hole punched in one or more of said layers, and an upsetting die having a shouldered projection formingabase portion and a reduced portion, the reduced portion being constructed and arranged, during the clenching operation, to extend into said lastnamed layer or layers, while the base portion extends through the other of said layers, said other of said layers being an outer layer, and an upsetting surface formed by the transverse surface of the shoulder between the base and the reduced portion.
i7. A machine for inserting blind eyelets in one or more of the layers of a plurality of layers including an outer layer, having in combination, a reciprocatory eyelet carrying set, and a cooperating setting member having its end portion constructed and arranged to enter all said layers and a shoulder forming an upsetting surface sufficiently near the end to be carried substantially through said outer layer for clenching the eyelet barrel on the otherlayer or layers while a portion of the setting member remains in said outer layer.
18. A tool for use in eyeleting machines for setting blind eyelets in one of a pair of layers including an outer layer, having its end shaped `to enter said layers and pass through both said layers thereof, and a shoulder forming an upsetting surface of relatively small diameter so located on the tool as to be carried substantially through said outer layer for clenching the eyelet barrel on the other of said layers indpendently of said outer layer.
