To IZZ whom it may conce/m Be it known that I, Orio NELSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in B oiler- Feeds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boiler feeds, and more especially boiler feeds for ordinary low pressure or heating boilers, the object of the invention being to provide an automatically operating boiler feed by means of which the water level in the boiler will be maintained substantially constant.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference `to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which* Fig. 1 is a section taken through the upper end of an ordinary heating boiler equipped with a. feed embodying the invention,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, lcomprises a float chamber 5 positioned adjacent the side of an ordinary low pressure or heating boiler (l and extending both above and below the normal water level therein, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper portion of the float chamber 5 is connected by a pipe 7 with the steam space in the boiler 6 and the lower portion thereof connected by a pipe 8 with the water space in the boiler 6. said pipe connections being constantly and entirely open to permit of the rise and fall of the water level in the boiler in the ioat chamber 5. A water-supply pipe 9 leads downwardly into the top of the float chamber said pipe 9 being connected with the ordinary city water supply system or other source of water under pressure. The lower end of the pipe 9 is provided with a conical valve seat 10 controlled by a conical valve 11 at the upper end of a vertical valve stem 12 projecting upwardly from the top ol a float 13 in tbe chamber A. spider 1i is arranged across the lower end of the chamber 5 to limit the downward movement of the float 13 therein, but permitting of the free movement of the water in said chamber. A wire mesh strainer l5 is inserted in thc pipe 9 above the valve seat 10 to guard the same against silt, grit, or the like in the water supply..
The arrangi-unent is such that when the water level in the boiler 6 is normal, the float 13 is supported thereby and presses the valve 1l upwardly with sufficient force to close and seal the lower end of the pipe 9, preventing further entry of the water. Then the water level of the boiler falls, the float 13 falls with it, thus opening the valve 10-11v and permitting the entry of the water into the boiler. As soon as the normal water level is again reached, however, this 'water supply is again automatically cut ofi'. thus automatically maintainingthe vater level, substantially constant'.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without dcparting from the spirit of the invention. I. therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth` but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A boiler comprising a float chamber positioned adjacent the boiler and extend ing above and below the water therein; a pipe connecting the upper portion of said chamber with the steam space of said boiler; a pipe connecting the lower portion ot' said float chamber with the water space in said boiler 5 a water supply pipe leading into the top of said ioat chamber and provided with a valve seat above the upper wall ot' said float chamber controlling the discharge therefrom.; a strainer arranged across said water supply pipe above said valve seat, a float in said chamber; a valve ste-m carried by said float and projecting upwardly therefrom through the upper wall of said float chamber, said upper wall acting as a guide for said valve stem; and a needle valve formed at the top of said valve stem cooperating with said valve seat, herebyY the walter level in the boiler is maintained substantially consta-nt7 substantially es described.
