zen ofthe United-States, residing at Colum-V businfthecounty of Franklin and State of (lhioyhave inventedcertain nevv5and-useful Improvements `inl Resistances,l of which the following Vis a specification, `reference .being hadtherein to the accompanying drawing.l
My present invention relates tdcertain new. ;a.'i:id. useful improvements in ,resistances adapted to use upon electric locomotiv'esfl traction. cars, and the like, for the control of theelec'tnid motors? 'by which such vehicles are actuated.
The especial object is to provide a light and compact resistance element which shall have high resistance and large heat radiating capacity coupled with great mechanical strength.
A. further object is to provide improved means for supporting a reflexed ribbon resistance element having the qualities above specified.
The devices by which I attain this ob]ect are fully set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which l F ig. l is a side elevation of a resistance unit embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device taken along the line II-II of Fig. l. n
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line III- III of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line IV-IV of Fig l. t
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modified construction.
Like numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures.
In the drawings I have shown a resistance unit formed of a continuous, relatively wide, ribbon conductor l, composed of a suitable alloy having high specitic electrical resistance and capable of withstanding relatively high temperatures. At uniformly spaced intervals along its length the conductor 1 is bent upon itself, in the direction ofits width, each bend being a complete semicircle, to form a laterally flattened helecoid 2. The helecoid 2 is suspended by one side upon a longitudinally extending horizontal lrod 3, positioned concentric with the semicircular bends of the conductor. The ends of the rod 3 are secured in suitable apertures of the supporting end frames 4 by the lock nuts 5 Serial No. 457.3512Y screw threaded to said rod-..1` A sleeve 6 and spacing washers T, formed of suitable dielec-A tric, material, insulate adjacent turns of the conductor 1 `from each other. and from the rod 3., and these parts are securely held in position by clampinglnuts v8 screw threaded to the rod 3. yasimilar rod 9,v parallel .with therod 3, and provided with similar insulatiiiglsleeve 'and spacing washers1V `is heldin position `concentricwith the lower semicirculzir ,ben`ds of the conductor l by'clamping nlLtSalO; screw ,threaded to said rod. The
ends of the rod9 project-through vertically extending slots 11 in the end frames 4, thereby aording support a ainst lateral displacement while permitting vertical movement in conformity with the expansion and contraction of the conductor due to its changes of temperature.
For convenience of manufacture the conductor l is formed in sections 12, 13 and 14 the ends 15 of which project upwardly beyond the rod l and are attached to terminal connectors 1G by which the sections are conneced together and with the conductors of the external circuits.
It is apparent that this construction is subject to wide variation without departure from the spirit of my invention. One suoli niodication is shown in Fig. 5 wherein the conductor 1 is built up of a plurality of relatively long bars 17 connected at their ends by relatively short bars 18 into a Series which is 'functionally identical with the ribbon conductors above described and which is mounted in substantially the same manner.
By the devices above described I have produced a compact and durable resistance unit of great heat radiating capacity which may be subjected to a wide range ot teinperatures without producing lateral disto tion of the resistance elements.
Vvhat I claim is:
1. In a resistance comprising a conductor bent upon itself to form a laterally Hab tened helecoid, means to rigidly' support one side of said helecoid. and means yieldable in the direction of longitudinal expansion and contrat-,tion ot' said conductor to support the other side of said hclccoid against lateral displacement. y
2. In a resistance comprising a continuous relativelyY wide ribbon conductor bent upon itself in the direction oiits width to lll "nm :i laterally flattened lielecoiil, menus to rigidly support one eide of Said helecoid, and means yieldziolc in the direction of llio longitinliniil expansion :ind contraction of Sii'a'coi'nniclor to support the other sirio of Said lielorfoifl :igni'nsl-lziteiiil displiicon'icnt,
