HENRI DANTIN, OF BORDEAUX, FRANCE.
DOUBLE-ACTING PUMP.
Application led August 26, 1921.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, HENRI DAN'rrN, citizen ot the Republic of France, and resident of Bordeaux, France, (post-office address 358 cours de Coulouse), have invented new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Pumps ('lor which I have tiled application in France on the 21st ot August, 1920, No. 522,771), of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to a double acting pump with one or several cylinders, comprising a single X-shaped valve piece and a single winged setting boltso as to permit instantaneous dismantling.
In order to make my invention more clearly understood, I have appended hereto drawings showing, as an example, an embodiment thereof.
In the said drawings:
Figure l, is a longitudinal section oi my pump;
Figure 2, is a side view of the same;
Figure 3, shows a modification oi' the device. i
As illustrated by the ligures, the device is constituted by a cylinder A within which moves a piston B, carrying a rod C. Cylinder A has on one ot' its ends a plate E, secured by bolts O and O and on its other end a stufling box plate D and a stutiing box D1.
In the upper part of the said cylinder are provided two apertures or ports V and V1 permitting the liquid or gas to pass. l
The upper part or dome K of the pump has suction J and forcing I openings and cncloses a valve piece G shaped as a mobile X and secured by a winged bolt N. The latter is screwed in at H and presses upon the closing plug M.
The valve piece has apertures closed by valves F, F1, F2, F3, moving upon pivots Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4', respectively. The pump is secured on a suitable device or support by means o t two lugs L1, L2, located. at its lower part.
Bearing the above explanations in mind, the working of my pump is as follows:
When piston B moves from right to left within cylinder A., there simultaneouslyfv occur, due to the pump being a double acting one, a suction and a -forcing of liquid or gas through the suction J and forcing I open-- ings or ports, the effect of which is to open valves F and F1" carried bv the Xeshaped device. When the piston B has reached the Serial No. 495,568.
end ot' its travel and the reverse motion takes place, valves F, F2 and F3 open in their turn while valves F and F1 close and the liquid or gas is forced` through port l. The motions continuing, the the same suction and forcing phases are repeated indeiinitely with the same regularity.
My pump, being of the horizontal type, can be mounted on any carriage and serve for pumping' any liquids; it can be used for watering, irrigating, etc.
Readily portable, its encumbrance is very small; its working is quite smooth and its delivery huge, while it can be beam,-or wheelor motor-operated.
Valves can be instantly removed by unscrewing the single winged bolt shown by Figure 2.
My pump can also be constructed with one or several cylinders, while comprising a single X-shaped valve piece and a single winged bolt.
It becomes biplex, triplex or quadruplex and its delivery corresponds to the number of cylinders which can be mounted twin or tand'emwise.
It can also be transformed into a vacuum pump or into an air compressor, or a compressor for any gas. For this purpose the valves have simply to be replaced by ground valves with guides.
Figure 3 illustrates a modification, con sisting in the intercalating of a 'l' or such like device between the forcing valves.l rllhis T, as indicated by its name, is made up of three branches or arms, oneof which is horizontal l; and caught in its middle by vertical arm 2 forming the T. The vertical arm 2, longer than the horizontal one, terminates at its 'oase in a boss 3 provided with a central hole intended to house an axle 4:; this boss is embedded in, the jaws of a small block 5 carrying the axle, which allows the T a right and lett oscillatory motion.
The T can be made of iron, cast-iron, bronze, etc. the nature of the material being selected according to the kind ot liquids lto be pumped.
As shown in the drawing, the T is positioned between two forcing valves facing one another, both for the double acting pump and for quadruplex or sextuplex ones.
The working of the T is as follows:
Let us suppose that, as shown in the appended drawing, right valve F1 opens under the pressure of the liquid or forcing, the
valve coming into contact with the right arm of the T thus causes the latter to tilt. Due to this motion, the left arm of the T bears on the lett valve, exerting on the latter a pressure equal to the liquid pressure that lifts the right valve, the consequence being a prompt closure of the lett valve. l/Vhen it is the left valve F that is lifted by the forcing action of the liquid, it is the right arm of the T which suddenly closes valve F1. It will be realised therefore that theT acts on the valve 'for the purpose ot promptly returning those parts to their seats. In this manner the serious drawbacks resulting from the valves `floating in the liquid are done away with, consequently delivery is increased since back yflow is prevented.
Besides, the atore described arrangement allows very light valves of any shape may be used without any possibility of the form adopted ner Vthe lightness thereof inj uriously interfering with the pump delivery whatever the sort of pump used.
Having now particularly `described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and the inanner in which the same is to be performed, what I claim is:
l. A `pump of the type set forth having a valve chamber, an X shaped frame received within and dividing said chamber into a suction and pressure compartments, a pair of normally closed valves carried by said frame adapted to be opened by the pressure of the vtluid delivered by said pump and `means interposed between said valves adapted to Vbe actuated by the opening of one valve to cause the closing of the other valve.
2. A pump of the type set forth having a valve chamber, an X shaped frame received within and dividing said chamber into -a suction and pressure compartments a pair of normally elosed valves carried by said trame adapted to be opened by the pressure of the fluid delivered by said pump and means interposed between said valves `adapted to be actuated by the opening of one valve to cause the closing. of the other valve, said means plvoted to said trame intermediate the walls thereof.
3. A pump of ythe type set forth having a i valve chamber, an X shaped 'frame received within and dividing said chamber into a suction and pressure compartments, a pair of normally closed valves carried by said trame adapted to vbe opened by the pressure of the
