REGISTER-RESET-TING MECHANISM.

To all whom it many concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. SORUM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Register-Resetting Mechanism, of which the tollowingis a specification.
This invention has relation particularly to registering machines of the type utilizing a plurality of counting or indicating wheels or devices. susceptible of actuation to register, indicate or record amounts of accounting transactions.
The invention involves essentially certain novel zeroizing or normalizing mechanism for accounting means of the type above referred to, and the improvements hereinafter set forth comprise a division of my application for patent, Serial Number 854,837, filed August 3, 191 1..
An especial object this invention has of the improvements of. been to devise simple means to control the zeroizing action of counting wheels or equivalent devices, which means is adapted for use equally as well in cooperation with the wheels or corresponding parts of a single counting device, or in conjunction with the regIst/erin .or accounting instrumentalities of a plura ity of counting devices susceptible of being actuated for normalizing purposes b some simple means common to all of said evices.

The invention is illustrated ings in connection with a the drawing apparatus comprising a base or supporting plate 201 adapted to be mountedxupona registeringfl-or similar machine having actuators 3,
one for each of the counting devices, a plurality of which are mounted upon said base 201. It is to be understood, however, that the zeroizing mechanism to be hereinafter set forth in detail; need not necessarily be employed in connect-ion with the particular form of counting device or devices. v
Referring especiall to FiguresQ and 6, it will be observed tliat the plate201 has inwardly projecting hooks 202 at the lower portion of its opposite ends adapted to engage over supporting rod 203. In like manner other hooks 20s at the opposite upper ends of the plate 201 engage the movable arms 205 on a shaft 206, and the arms 205 are adapted to be moved so as to connect the plate 201 and the counting devices thereon with the machine which comprises the actuators 3, one of which will operate each counting device. Furthermore, each counting device, as seen in the drawings, comprises a plurality of counting wheels 213.
The means by which the actuators 3 are operated being immaterial to the invention, no further description thereof will be given. The plate 20]; is provided with a plurality of openings at its lower portion through each of which one of the counter actuators 3 is adaptedto operate, the front end of the actuator being engageable with a lug 207 on a slide 208. The counting devices for each of the actuators 3 are substantially alike and therefore only one will be described in detail, the same including the slide 208 previously mentioned having its lug 207 and said slide being supported by a bracket 209 fastened to the plate 201. The slide 208 has a vertical lug 208 provided with a lateral pin 208" which enters the bii'urcation of an extension 210 of a disk 211 mounted on the resetting shaft 212. At one side of the disk 211 are the several countingwheels 213 .which may be styled the usual units, tens, hundreds and thousands wheels, the number of these wheels being adapted to be increased according to the requirements. The disk 211 carries at one side thereof the pawls 21 i pressed outwardly by spring means as at215, said pawls engaging with teeth 216 formed internally on the units wheel 213. lit is to be understood that the disk 211 and the counting wheels are coaxially mounted loose on the resetting'shaft 212' and there is provided between each counting Wheel 218 and its next adjacent counting wheel a suitable carryover mechanism such as illustrated in Figure 8. This transfer mechanism is substantially the same as that of United States Patent No. 728,502, issued May 19, 1903, to W. L. Sandage and no claim is, therefore, made to the mechanism as shown therein. As seen in Figure 8, however, the units Wheel 213 has pivoted thereto a transfer pawl213 which when the nose thereof engages a projection and the tail thereof is received in a recess 218, interlocks the units wheel 213 with "he wheel 213 at its side, the tens wheel having projections or teeth 216 on its irr ery adapted to be engaged by W pawl. 213 when so adjusted. The projection 217 is in the nature of a cam, being h :mcd on a collar 21? keyed or otherwise t 'ed on the resetting shaft 212. Obviously one time during'each revolution ot the units the notch 22 a naeaero wheel 213, the pawl 213 thereof, which is housed in the recessed side of the tens wheel, is caused to move outwards at its nose into engagement with the teeth 216 of the wheel 213 of higher denomination, whereupon the increment of movement imparted to the units wheel orwheel of lower denomination at this time is likewise imparted to the wheel of higher denomination because the two are temporarily interlocked during one-tenth portion of their revolution, in an obvious manner. l/Vhen this increment of movement happening at the time of transfer is ended, the tail of the pawl 213 rides out of the recess 218 and disengagesthe pawl of the counting wheel of lower denomination from the wheel of higher denomination in an obvious manner. The specific mode. of trainst'er or carryover above described is immaterial to th s invention because it is contemplated to use-any desirable type of carryover'tor the countin *wheels of each counting device, the Wheefis of all of said devices being carried by the common shaft 212, the latter forming not only the axis for the counting wheels but also a resetting means.
Every time one of the actuators 3 is operated its outer end engages the slide 208, therebymoving the latter outwards against the tension or a spring 219. At the same time the connection of the slide 208 with the disk 211 partly rotates the latter and such movement is correspondingly imparted to the units wheel of the counting device, the movement being transferred to the wheels of higher denominations in the customary manner above explained.

As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings, the counting wheels of all of the counting devices carried by the plate 201 are mounted upon the common resetting shaft ..12. Each counting device comprises as its main parts the counting wheels 213 referred to, the disk 211 for each set oi 'wheels and the spring retracted slide 208 interlocked with said disk. The shaft 222 not only carries the locking lever 221 at one end but at the other end an arm 228 is mounted, the said arm 228 and the lever 221 having inwardly extending studs or pins 229 projecting beneath a resetting control member or plate 230 (see Figures 4 and 7). The resetting control member or plate 230 extends lengthwise of the main supporting plate 201 and is formed with a flange 230 adapted to engage with resetting lugs 231 one of which is provided, on the peripheral portion of each counting wheel. In other words, under normal conditions there is mounted on the shaft 222 a resetting plate having a spring 232 connected therewith and with the locking lever 221 (see Figure 4:), said spring tending to move the flange230' of the resetting control plate into engagement with the resetting or zeroizin lugs 231 of the counting wheels. However, the spring 226 connected with the lever 221 is of greater tension than the spring 232 and thus when the lever 221 interlocks with the loci-ring wheel 225, the pins 229 carried by the lever 221 and by the arm 228, bear against the under side of the control plate and hold the latter in a position in which it cannot engage with the zeroizing lugs 231. The above action results from the fact that as the lever 221 tilts at its lower end towards the wheel 225 to engage in notch 224, the upper end tilts away from the wheel so that pin 229 on lever 221 may engage and shift the plate 230 to render its flange 230 inactive relative to the lugs 231. The arm 228 rocks with lever 221, of course, and the pin 229 of the arm acts on the plate 230 in the same manner as the pin 229 of said lever. The depression of the locking lever 221, however, moves said lever to disengage it from the locking wheel 225 and simultaneously the shaft 222 is rocked to permit of very slight downward movement of the control plate 230 and its flange 230 so that the flange 230 is in the path of rotation of the lugs 231 and when the resetting shaft 212 is turned by the knurled knob or handle 233, the various counting wheels of the several counting devices will be zeroized owing to the engagement of the lugs 231 with the flange 230 of the control plate 230. At this particular time the notch 22% will he again opposite the locking lug 223 and the latter will spring into the notch under the action of the spring 226 normalizing the locking lever 221, locking the shaft 2 .2, and rocking the shaft 222 sufiiciently to cause the pins 229 of the parts 221 and 228 to raise the con trol plate into a position wherein 230 is out of the path of rotation the lugs 231.
lf desired, as seen in Figure 6 especially, the slide 298 may have extra lug 7 at a little elevation than the lug 207. By engagement of the actuator 3 with. the lug 7 double the amount of movement of the slide may be effected as compared with the movement when the actuator 3 engages the lug 207. Such engagement and resulting movement may be used to cause two increments of movement of a register, as for registering up a two penny selection, a two dime selection, etc.
Having thus is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of counting wheels, a resetting shaft for said wheels, actuating means for the shafts, means normally locking said shaft from rotation, a resetting control member, means on the counting wheels to cooperate with the control member for zeroizing purposes, and means other than the shaft actuating means for releasing the locking means for said shaft and thereby moving 'the control member into a position to positively act on the counting wheels for resetting purposes.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of counting devices, a resetting shaft on which said devices are mounted, actuating means for the shaft, a resetting control plate common to all of described the invention, what the counting devices, means normally locking the resetting shaft against rotation and holding the resetting plate in an inoperative position relative to said counting devices, and a simple means other than the actuating means aforesaid for unlocking said shaft and moving the resetting plate into a position wherein it is adapted to cause positive stopping of the counting devices.
