exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a. part of It this specification.
My invention relates to pulping machines and it has particular relation to the provis1on of simple and efficient preliminary cutting or slicing means in a machine of the It character described whereby the capacity of the machine is markedly increased.
In pulping machines wherein a large mass of material is rapidly agitated and beaten by a-series of paddles, or otherwise, whereby an it 1s crushed and the fruit pulp urged through a'screen, the refuse being drawn off at the end of the pulping chamber, it is highly desirable that the material be as finely divided or cut as possible prior to being fed ht into the pulping chamber. This has been accomplished heretofore by feeding the material against cutter blades whereby it is divided.
In practicing such a method, it is essente tial that the material be fed at a rapid rate against the cutter blades. I-Ieretofore, the feeding means usually comprises a screw conveyor and the cutter knives were stationary. I find, however, that the capacity of i at such pulping machines may be somewhat increased by rotating the feeding conveyer and the cutter in opposite directions. The conjoint action of the feeding means and the cutter is such that the machine capacity may,
to at times, be doubled.
One object of my invention, therefore, is to provide a cutter and a means for supplying material thereto, compplsing a screw conveyer, the two rotating 1n opposite d1- tt rections.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whollyexterior of the cuttrng chamber whereby the two instrumentalities above designated are rotated in opposlte d1- 50 rections. In attaining this object I provide shafts journaledt one within the other and so associate gears with these shafts that they 1920.; Serial no. aeaisa are rotated in opposite directions. A cutterhead is mounted upon one ofthe shafts and a screw container extends the length of the other shaft.
For a better understanding of my invention reference may be hadto the accompanyin drawings, in which:

A pulping chamber 13 is provided at the bottom thereof with a screen 14L, and has mounted therein rotatable heating paddles 15. it receiving chamber 16 entendsbeneath the screens 14: and serve to gather and to deliver, through a spout 17,1the. pulp material. The refuse is gradually urged to the end of the member 13, and may be drawn off through a spout 18.
The paddles are mounted upon a shaft 19 which'extends entirely through the machine and is journaled in theupper portions of the standards 10 and 11. The preliminary receiving chamber 20 is supplied with material through a hopper 21. The material supplied to the chamber 20 is received by a screw container 22 mounted upon a shaft 23 which revolves around the shaft 19. The end frame 24 of the chamber 20 provides a bearing for the shaft 23. Keyed to the shaft 19 is a cutter head 25 which closes the opening between the chambers 20 and 13. The cutter-head is provided with a plurality of knives 26 and co-operating openings 27 The material after being sliced passes through the latter openings and into the main pulping chamber 13.
Exterior to either of the food receiving chambers an'internal tooth-gear 28 is keyed to the shaft 19 and therefore is rotated in the same direction as the cutter-head 25. It
will be noted that the cutter-head is rotated in such direction that the knife edges are urged against the material; Another gearwheel 29 is keyed to the shaft 23, while between the gear-wheel 28 and the gear-wheel 29 is an idler opposite directions,

It will be observed therefore, that in my machine all of the means, whereby the feed container and the cutter-head are rotated in dency for the material to be tainted by coming in contact with grease or other gear luricant is present.
I find that the capacity of the pulping ma-- chine is greatly increased by arranging for the opposite rotation between the cutterhead and-the screw container inasmuch as the material is forced veryrapidly against the knives 26 and thereafter through the openings 27 into the main pulping chamber.
' yWhile I have described but one embodiment of my invention it) is apparent that many modifications 'may occur to those skilled in the art and I desire, therefore, that it be limited only by the showing of the prior art and by the scope of the appended claims.

A pulping machine comprisin a horizontal pulping chamber having a ischarge outlet, and provided with a screen, a sweep rotatable about a horizontal axis in said chamber for forcing the pulp through said screen and for advancing the refuse toward said discharge opening, means for feeding material to-said pulping chamber, a cutter head located between said feedin means and saidchamber, for cutting up tie material before it enters the chamber, said cutter ead being rotatable about the said axis as said sweep, said cutter head comprising a plate having an opening therein and a knife located adjacent the rear edge of said opening.

A pulping machine comprising a pulp ing chamber, having a discharge opening and a screen, a sweep rotatable in said chamber for forcing the pul through said screen, and advancing the refhse toward said discharge opening, and means for feeding material to said pulping chamber comprising a feed screw and means for rotating said eed screw in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the swee 9.
