httttlltt GEORGE M. JOHNSON, 0F JEANNETTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Minn CAGE Application filed February 24, 1921. Serial No. 447.594.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnomes M. Jon son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeannette, in the county of 'Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mine Cages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mine cages, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, means connected or secured withrthe bottom or deck of the cage to p revent the buckling, sagging or bending of said bottom or deck when the cage is shifted to and from normal position and when being tilted, and to further provide the bottom or deck of the cage with means to provide a clearance during the movement of the cage to prevent injury to the operating rod of a can block releasing mechanism on the bottom or deck and also toprevent injuring to the actuating lever, arranged at a landing, for said operating rod.
,l illflll'lel" objects of the invention are to provide a mine cage which is simple in construction and arrangement, strong, duraole, having its bottom or deck reinforced to prevent buckling or sagging thereof, readily set up and comparativelyinexpensive.
iVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote correspondlng parts tl'iroughout the several vi.ews:-
Figure l, is a side elevation of a mine cage in accordancewith this invention,
Figure 2, is a top plan of the bottom or deck. broken away,
Figure 3 is a front elevation.
Figure 4, is a fragmentary view illustrating the brace member associated with the clearance in the front edge of the deck.
' Referring to the drawings in detail the bottom or deck 1 is constructed of structural steel,beams and plates, and is cutaway at its front, as at 2, forming a passage to provide a rectangular clearance, so that during of the cage, and which are termed upper side plates and are indicated at 5.
To prevent the buckling or sagging of the deck 1, the cage includes a pair of lower side plates 6, which are triangular and de pend from the deck 1. The plates 6 are of less length than the length of the deck 1, and are formed with inwardly extending flanges as at 7. The lower portion of the plates 6 are cutaway to provide clearance for the bearings S for the shaft 9. The plates 6 are arranged inwa dly with respect to the side bars 10 of the cage,tl1ese latter supporting the bearings 8 and extend above and below the deck 1. The lower ends of the bars 10 are connected together by a cross member 11. The top of the plates 6 abut against the lower face of the deck 1.
Positioned against the sides of the deck 1., well as being secured to each side of the deck, is a coupling plate 12, which extends slightly above the deck. The plates 12 are of a length equal to the length of the deck, and each of the plates 12, has a depending portion 13, of less length than the length of its respective plate and which overlaps and secured to a lower side plate 6, by the securing devices 14:, under such conditions the lower side plates are coupled with the deck 1, and in connection with the coupling plates prevent the deck 1, from sagging or buckling, and further act as a support for the deck. The lower side plates are also secured to the bearings 8 and as such plates are flanged they are very rigid;
lVhat I claim is 1. A mine cage comprising a deckhaving its front edge between the center of the deck and one side edge thereof provided with a vertical passage constituting a clearance, and a brace member arranged below the top of the deck and registering with the walls of tei', said plates provided With inwardly extending flanges below the deck, and a pair of coupling plates secured to and depending from the sides of the deck andv overlapping and secured to the upper portion of the side 10 plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE M. JOHNSON.
