To all f3/acme? may concer/1.'
Be it known that` lf, (iur ll. citizen of the Vnited States, residing at Venetia, in the county ot' Yashington and Stateot Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Alinpro vements in Rim llxpanders. of which the 'following` isa specification.
This invention relates to expandimg` devices, and more particularly to a device tor expandingautomobile rims.
)ne ol the main objects ot' the invention is to provide a device of the character stated of -simple construction and operation which may be readily applied to a rim ot' standard construction, A 4lurther object is to provide a device in which the pressure will be exerted in such direction as to expand the rim so as to bringv the ends thereof into Contact, the pressure applying means being readily justable to suit circumstances. Further objects will appear from the detailed de scription.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side view of an constructed in accordance with my Figure 2 is a top plan taken substantially on line Figure is a side view applied.
rl`he device comprises two substantially circular bands l which are secured in par# allel spaced relation by connectingl strips 2. Each of these bands is provided adjacent to each end with a plurality ot sleeves 3 which are secured vto the inner iace of the band transversely thereof. These sleeves are disposed in pairs transversely ot' the device and are adapted to receive pins -l inserted through the sleeves and through eyes 5 of eye boltsG upon which a turn buckle 7 is threaded, the shanks o't' these bolts being` oppositely threaded. By turningthe turn buckle 7 in one direct-ion the members l ma)r be compressed or moved toward each other at their free ends so as to permit ready insei-tion ot' the device in rim u upon which a bi M rsox, a
expander invention. view ot' the same ot' Figure l. of the device tire 7) has been placed. B v rotating` turn buckle 7 in such direction as to torce the bolts t3 apart the device is spread so as to expand the rim n until the inner end a. thereof' cont-acts with the outer end a". The pins 4 and sleeves 3 provide simple and Serial No. 484,952.
etticicnt means whereby the bolts 6 and turn buckle T may be adjusted so as to insure application ofthe pressure along a line disposed at such an angle to the rim as to expand the rim with a minimum oi force applied.
The position oli' the opening provided in the rim to accommodate. the valve stem often varies considerably in rims ot different makes relative to the cut or opening oit' the rim. For this reason, when the rim is applied. the valve stem may be in any one ot a number ot' different positions `relative to the cut or ends of the rim. lin some rims the valve stem is positioned diametrically opposite to the break in the rim, and in others it may be positioned one-quarter,v or more or less. of the circumference of the rim trom the cut 'or break in the rim. In some makes ot' rims, such as the Stanweld and Baker rim, knobs or projections are provided on the inner face of the rim. By providingr the two spaced armularmembers or bands l,
produce an expander which may be readily used with a rim oi any type, as the bands straddle the valve stem or projections on the inner 'tace olg the rim thus permitting the device. tobe so placed that the ends Ot the bands are positioned adjacent to the ends ot' the rim. his insures that the pressure for expanding` the rim is applied to the ver)v best advantage so as to permit the `Vrim to be readily expanded with but little effort.
1. In a device ot' the character described, two annular members secured in parallel spaced relation, and means adjacent to the ends ol said members for expanding and contra ctin e' 4 the same.
2. ln a device olE the character described, two substantiall)Y annular members secured in parallel Vspaced relation` sleeves secured to the inner taces of said members adjacent to the ends thereof and disposed transversely ot' the members` oppositely threaded eye bolts` pins .passing through said sleeves and the eyes of the bolts 't'or adjustably attaching' the same to said membersand a turn buckle threaded upon said bolts.
In testimony whereot' l atlix my signature.
GUY B. SIMPSON.
