Application. iledhovcmber l, 1918. Serial No. 260,670.
`To all whom t 'may concern: Y
"Be it known that` l, `WILLIAM F; Kissen,
` Jr., a citizen of the United tates, and residnient;
ing at Altoona, county of Bla-ir` aiidtateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain ,new
"and useful lmprovements in Steam `Boilers,
ofwhich the followingis a specification. Y t `My `invention relates to that class of boilers in which the water space 'is between an outer shell and an innershell containing the fire box and they combustion chamber, and my invention consistsin means for neutralizing the strains which would otherwise result from longitudinal expansion and contraction of the inner shell and also in limiting by such means the `area of communica "tion between 'the ire box and the combustion chamber, and in the constructionof the parts las fully set forth hereinafter, and as illus trat-ed in the i accompanying drawing, in which t Fig. l is a longitudinal section of part of a locomotive boiler illustrating my `improve Fig. 2 is a and Fig.`3 is a perspective view in part section illustrating a particular construction of the distensible connecting member between `the section on the line 2, 2, Fig. l.;
two sections of the inner shell of the boiler. i
The boiler may be of any usual construc- `tion having an'internal shell, the longitudi- `nal expansion and contraction of `which is desiredfto be neutralized, and `as shown in the drawing is a locomotive boiler `having an outer shell A and an inner shell B with `the water space between thetwo, the inner shell containing there `box so and combustion chamber y. i
Between the two sections of the inner shell,
l interpose a distensible member C which is ofiplate metal folded so as to produce transversely a hollow ll-shaped rib 3 and side flanges 4, 5, which maybe riveted to the adjacent ends of the shell section,` as shown. llhe folded portion or hollow rib 3 is transversely distensible, that is, the sides `can" separateor be brought together as au result of any contractionor elongation of theshell sections, thereby compensating for these` changes and preventing the` strains which would otherwise occur. s i
The inner shell is in two sections, the front section containing` the combustion chamber and the rear section constituting the sidesf `and top ofthe fire box. t i
llt is desirable in manyinstances to con-v tract the passage between the tire chamber and the combustion chamber and insuch case v r the rib"3`is arranged to extendinward. As
shown,- the lower portion projects inward to a greater extent thanthe upper, forming in i effect a bridge wall.`
` While "the member C may vary in the form, arrangement and proportion of the parts' somewhat, l prefer the `construction shown in the drawings where the lower portion of the `member at the rear extends downward to a point below the level of the grate bars and wholly across the fire-box forming therear face w of the latterwith side `flanges d, l for bolting to the sides of the t shell, while the forward portionof the member extends downward to a less extent than the rear portion and is bent forward to form a `flange 5` for bolting to the rear end of the shell of the combustion chamber, and thel mud ring 6 is bolted between the lower edge of the rear portion of the member C and a flange of the outer shell A `of theboiler, as
.along the lines S, S, Fig. 2, constitute a member in oneccontinuous piece. The upper section of the expansion device may therefore be described as a lll-shaped expansion element comprising a hollow rib or corrugation extending from end to end of said element and having oppositely Vprojecting lateral anges. `The lower element comprises a vertical front wall 'w having lateral langesll:
at its vertical ends, a rearv wall of less height than 4the front wall having a flange `5 at its bottom edge and a semicircular wall connecting the tops of said front and rear walls.
Although a, specific embodiment ofthe invention has been described in detail it is to be understood that the invention is not thus limited but includesV modifications .and l changes which come within the scope of the" appended claims.
Without limiting myself to the constructionv and arrangement of parts shown, I claim:
l. An expansion member for connecting the shell sections of a boiler containing jche re box and vCombustion Chamber eonsiting' offwo parte Welded together, one formed of a strip bent transversely to ineke e hollow riband Side flanges, and 'the other bent to form a Continuation of seid hollow rib and.
' flanges and extending downward nnfl tranevversely at one side/to constitute the vfront end. of the lire box, substantially ne set. forth. 2. en article of manufacture, an arch shaped expansion @lenient for the fir i-bof; of
connecting` the tops of Suid frontI und rear Walls.
ln i locomotive boiler having :L fire-box and a. combustion elnunber, :in expnneion leviee connecting the inner shells of said firebox and Qhzunber comprisingl :in upper parta and :L lower part Weldedl thereto, ssiirl upper part Consisting of zi, strip haring :l hollow rib or eorrugzition extending from end to end und having oppositely projecting lateral i'langee; seid lower part comprising :in :irrh shaped element including :i rertirzil front will haring flanges :it its vertical ende, :i rear will of less height', than the front will having flange it its bottom edge. und :i Curved wall connecting the tope of said fromy and rear walls.
ln testinionv whereof l :i'lix my signnfiire.
