Transvaal, Province of the Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and useful, Improvements" in Means for Eliminating Errors in Bookkeeping and the like; and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use the same. 1 i

In nost'systems of book-keeping considerable trouble and expense is involved in getting out trial and other balances, the diffioultyarising mainly in transferring various sums to. the debit or credit of various accounts fron day books or the like, adding the figures and checking the totals with the originalbooks; Various machines are known which get over the difliculty but the heavy cost of these is prohibitive very many cases.

According to this inventiona'machine is produced which will save a considerable amount of labor and expense and Which can be constructed at a very small cost compared with others. I By means of this machine various entries in var ous books,fol1os and the like can be assembled in such a manner as to permit of being-readily dealt with. The essential details of the invention consist of a frame and a carrier capable of IBliltlVG movement and means for mounting paper on the carrier or. frame and for giving 1P3.

movement in. a direction transverse to said relative movement when required. On the carrier or frame. is a book and by movement of the carrieror the frame certain desired leaves of the book can be brought on to a plate onwhichpaper rests, carbon paper or the like beingprovided between the leaf or leaves of the book in whichit is desired to make an entry and the paper.

at the end of any desired period either in the ordinary way or by means of an adding machine.

Moreover the entries can be made by hand or the invention can readily be adapted for use in conjunction with a typewriter.

The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing in which n Fig. I shows a plan of the apparatus.

Two applications of the invention are given, but I do notlintit myself to these partomer.

A book of account forms 1 having, say, six accounts per page is mounted on aframe 2 and capable of movement along it on a carrier 3 which is provided with any suitable means, such as a screw as at 4, whereby the book can be moved upwards or downwards so that the pages may lie flat on the plate 5 in whatever position in the book they may be. Paper 6 is carried on a roller 7 and passes over the plate 5 onto a second roller 8. Theroller 8 is fitted with a pawl and ratchet device 9 similar to that commonly in use on typewriters by means of which the paper can be advanced a definite distance. according to the movement of the pawl when rollers 7 or 8 so that each time the carrier is moved back the paper 6 advances a definite distance. Friction rollers arealso provided for keeping the paper flat but are not shown in the drawing. To make the necessary entries the book is placed in position so that desired. or the carrier may be geared to the one or two pages lie on the plate and paper, the pages being interleaved with copying paper.

The figures appearing vertically in the vanmans book on any one day are entered horizontally on the customers accounts book and appear on the paper. \Vhen one page of the account book has been dealt with the ratchet device 9 is operated, carrying the paper upwards with regard to the plate 5, and

the next entries, made on the following page of the account book, fall immediately under those of the previous page. These entries are continued until any one 'vanmans book has been dealt with, when they can be readily totalled; these totals should agree with the totals in the vanmans books.

To obtain an abstract of the said accounts at the end of the month, the totals of each account are collected on the paper 6.

The invention can readily be adapted to dealing with ledgers.

In this case the difficulty arises that entries as they stand on the various folios will not fall directly under each other on the paper record.

To obviate this difficulty the ratchet device 9 may be done away with, or means may be applied for putting it temporarily out of action.

The two rollers 7 and 8 carrying the paper are connected together, for example, by a chain 10 and on this chain is a pointer 11 which is normally rigidly secured to the chain 10 but which can be moved independently when desired.

- Supposing then that the first entry in the ledger falls at or near the bottom of the folio. The pointer 11 is moved opposite the entry which is then made. The next entry falls near the top of the page and the pointer is moved. moving the chain 10 thus carrying the paper with it, so that it points immediately above the figure to be entered which must then appear immediately below theprevious entry.

The pointer 11 is then released from the .chain 10 and moved independently, without moving the paper 6, opposite the last entry.

It is now necessary to make an entry say half way down a folio and the pointer 11 is moved, gripping the chain 10 and moving the paper 6 with it, immediately above this entry which falls immediately below the previous entry. This system can be extended indefinitely so that all entries made in the ledger fall immediately under one another and can readily be checked with the cash, purchase or other book of original entry from which the entries in the ledger are made and forms a true and exact entry of what has been recorded in the ledger.

It will be obvious that this can be extended with equally successful results to all kinds of books under almost any conditions.

Figures V and VI show a modification of the invention in which the movement of the carrier automatically advances the paper 6 a definite distance and in Which the carrier 3 and the rollers 7 and 8 are both movable allowing for entries on the left hand pages of the book if desired.

The rollers f7 and 8 are slidably mounted on bars 12 and 12 which are capable of rotation in bearings 18, the said bars having feathers 14 which engage with corresponding grooves in the rollers 8.

In this case the pawl and ratchet device 9 works in conjunction with the bar 12 which rotates the roller 8.

The rollers, plate and paper can thus be moved either to right or left and the carrier 3 is also capable of movement so that the positions of the book and plate can be interchanged allowing for entries on the left hand pages.

The carrier 3 has fixed to it a rack 15 and a wheel 16 suitably mounted in bearings on the frame is so placed that it will engage with the rack 15 whenever the carrier 3 is moved towards the plate 5.

The wheel 16 is geared by bevel gears 17 and a chain and sprockets 18 to the bar '12. The said wheel 16 is fitted with a free wheel device so that it only operates the bar 12 when the carrier 3 is moved in one direction.

Each time the carrier 3 is moved, away from the plate in order to turn over a fresh page and moved towards the plate, the paper is moved over the plate such a distance as to present a fresh surface for the reception of the figures, and this movement takes place on the inward or outward movement of the carrier 3 according as the plate is at the left or right hand end of its travel.

I claim:

1. Means for simplifying book-keeping and the like comprising a frame, a carrier adapted for movement relative to the frame and to support a book, a plate over which paper is passed, said paper being carried by rollers on each side of said plate, means for moving the paper a definite distance over the plate and means for dnplicatin thientries in the book onto the said paper.
