The depression or channel 3G in the top of the slide 26 is of less width than the length ot a match. in order that the matches shall bridge the channel; and the lower edges of the blades are ot' less width than the channel so that the blades7 enteringY the ehannel, will descend below the matches. By this construction the blades in their descent displace the matches laterally and thus oh viate any liability ot impingingr against :ind crushing the lowermost matches.
The conveyer is intermittently actuated to position successive pairs of box trays directly beneath the measuring chamber, preparatory to the withdrawal ot the slide 2G. In the present instance a conveyer ot the character illustrated in Patent No. 1,360,438 is employed, said conveyei` being constructed to support trays and shucks in endwise relation to each other, so that the filled ini-:rvs can be inserted into their complementary shucks and covers duringr the progress of the conveyer. 7. lln a match-box filling machine, an elon gated hopper having an inclined bottom, an inclined member located Within the delivery portion of the hopper and providing therewith a contracted throat portion, the free end of said member being extended horizontally beyond the delivery end of the hopper bottom and constituting the top of a measuring chamber, a movable bottom for said chamber, an element comprising a pluapart partitioning blades rality oit spaced-apart partitioning members movable .into and from the measuring chamber, one of said partitioning members constituting` a gate operable to control communication between the delivery portion. of the hopper and the measuring chamber, means for intermittently feeding a successionot trays beneath and past. the bottom of the measuring chamber, and means -:t'or operating the said bottom memberl and the partitioning' element at predetermined intervals. i

In a box filling machine, a horizontallydisposed measuring chamber, including a movable bottom member having a depression in its upper supporting surface, means for supplying' matches to said chamber when the bottom thereof is closed by said member, a gate vertically reeiprocative in said chamber and'into and from the depression in the bottom member, means for intermittently feeding a succession of trays beneath and past the bottom member of the measuring chamber, andmeans foroperating the said misero? bottom and intervals.

In a box filling machine, a horizontally-disposed measuring chamber, ineluding a movable bottom member having in its upper surface a longitudinal. depression ol' less Width than the length of a match, means for supplying matches to said chamber when the bottom thereof is closed by said member, a vertically reciprocative element compris ing a plurality of spaced-apart partitioning members movable into and from the contents of the measuring chamber and into and from the depression of the bottom member, means for intermittently feeding a succession of trays beneath and past the bottom of the measuring chamber, and means for operating the said bottom member and the partitioningr element at predetermined intervals.
