Description

j" HUH-OWSKL EXPANSEBLE SPIKE 0R NAIL.
APPLICATION. min JUNEZZ, 192:.
Patented 0st. 241, 1922.
UNHTED STTES JAKOB HOJNOWSKI, OF NEKOOSA, WISCONSIN'.y
EXPANSIBLE SPIKE 0R NAIL.
Application ined June 22,
T0 all w/wm it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAnon Hoaxowsiir, citizen of Poland, residing at Nekoosa. in the county of ll'ood and State ot' list-onsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llxpansible Spikes or Nails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an expansible spike or nail which may be used for securing railway ties, beams, iiooring or the like.
'Bhe invention has foran object to provide a simple form oi' spike or nail which may be driven thrrnigh wood or like material audwhich will automaticall)Y expand, or shoot out lateral tongues when the end thereof engages the wood beneath a bored hole.
For further comprehension oi the invention, and ot' the objects and advantages thereof, references will be had to the followinff description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features ofthe invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a railroad spike constructed according to the invention.
F ig. 2 shows the spike engagedA in a tie.-
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a modified form of spike.
Fig. 4 is a view of a nail constructed according to the invention.
F ig. 5 is an enlarged end view of the spike shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizont-al section on the line 6 6 of Fig.- 1.
In constructing my improved spike or nail according to the present invention the shank thereof is slotted from the entering end toward the head, this slot having conveying` side walls, the lower end of the slot being plugged with a wedge ot' sufficient hardness to enter the wood beneath the bored hole, and cause the lateral tongues to expand.
In Fig. l of the drawings I have shown a spike having a sha-nk l0 'and oset head l0. the shank being shown as of circular cross 4I claim as 'new and desire to 1921. Serial No. 479,466.
section. The entering'end of the shank 10 is formed with a. V-slot 1l the lower end ot' which is supporting a wedge 12, in recesses w 13. The end wedge will be of lsuitable shape and of sufficient-ly hard material to force its way partly into the wood.
In the application of the spike, as'to a railway tie 14 (Fig. 2) the4 latter is bored to any required depth and when the spike is lowered through the bored hole 15 and wedge l2 strikes the wood the prongs 15, formed by the slotting of the spike, spread outwardly as shown. The spike is thus securely held against withdrawal.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a spike or nail having a shank 10b of rectan gular cross section having a wedge end 20 which tapers also at the sides, this wedge end being slotted as at 21 and provided with 6.5 a wedge 22 similar to the wedge 12.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a spike similar in construction to that shown in Fig. 1 except that it is provided with a hexagonal head 23, the shank ot' the spike being indicated at l0a 70 and the 'wedge at 12a.
Having thus described my invention what protect by Letters Patent oi' the United States is as follows:
l. An expansihle spike comprising a onepiece shankhaving a tapering slot formed in its entering end to provide a pair of prongs, and a wedge held in the space between said prongs and extending from the 8O tip of one to the tip ofthe other.
2. An expansible spike comprising a onepiece shank having a -tapering lslot formed in its entering end to provide a pair of prongs, and a wedge -held in the space between said prongs and extending from the tip of one prong to the tip ot' the other, said wedge being tapered to present a shaipened edge. Y
In testimony whereof I` have aixed my signature.
JAKOB HOJNOWSKI.
