To (Ll/Z 'whom zmag/ contient." 1 l, .A Be ity knowinthat I, Cannell, fLioH'i,y a citizen of the United` lStates, residing at Rush-l more,r inV thecounty of `Nobles and State of lizlinnesota, have.v inventedfcertain "new and. useful, vImpioveinents' -in,y Grain Doors, of which the following is a specilication, reference be ing; jhad to .the accompanying (,lrawings.
The present invention has foritspurpose theprovisioir of grain door yfor grain cars, wherein means isafforded for urging pressure upon the door, at apoint substantially midway the upper andlower edges ofthe door at its ends,ffor the puipose of ,holding the door securely in place, andi for resist# ing the pressure of the grain on theinterior of the car. i
Another purpose is the provision of a grain door .including normally arcuately shaped bars or rods connected to thecar body at points below the door opening and adjacent the ends of the door, said bars normally bowed vfor urging against the ,sec-r tions of the door, to hold. the parts of the door in place andto prevent rattling `of the door due to the vibrationr of the car.
Still another purpose has todo with'connecting the lower ends of the rods or bars to the car body at points below` the door opening, so as to permit outward. movement of the rods, whereby the sections of the` door may be easily removed.
A. further purpose has to do gaging bolts, to hold the rodsy inv position,
and to cause them to urge lagainst lthe doorv sections,.therevbeing washers and nuts applied to the bolts to hold the split kor forked ends of the rodsjinposition. j .V
Vhile the design and construction at present illustratedand. set forth are deemed preferable,y it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more prac'- tical forinvfor,y commercial purposes, the invention may be'susceptible of changes and the right to `these .changes is claimed, provided they are coinprehended *within* the `scope of what is claimed.` The invention comprises further features and combination' off parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in 'the drawings and claimed. i I f witlithe pro` vision of split or forked ends'at thefk'upper; portions ofthe rods, for the purpose of entionpf agrain car, showing itheimprove'd 4 grain door holding means applied,#for*hold ing the grain door inl place;
Figure 21sV averti'cal sectional view.-v on linel of Figure 1, showingt'he frodsfin position, fandshowing them disposedioutloosened;Y f v. q r
yFigure 3 i's'an enlargedfdet-ail=view of the attaching plate for connectingthe lower end of a rod to the car;
Figure t isa detail view'of one of the door sections; and
Figure 5 isv a sectional view on line 5 5- of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a grain car, which has a grain door opening 2, andBl denotes the` door, which'comprises a plurality of sections 4l. The ends'of the sections of the door arek provided with cleatsv 1 designates '.waidly in dotted lines with their Vupper ends r' i 5,r` which connect the ends of tlieslats of the door sections, for the purpose of holding the slats relatively in position.
`Secured to the lower portion of the car adjacent the lower edge of the door opening are plates 6, which have slots 7, which are T-shaped in cross-section j Oneend of the slot of reach `plate is closed bythe wall4 8,
thereby preventing downward `movement of the door holding-means. y o
The door holding means comprises a`r pair of rods 9, lthe .lower ends of which'have transverse heads l0, which engage thel slots of the plates 6. The rods9 are constructed of spring metal, such assteel, and are bowed or arcuately `shaped as illustrated in dotted lines, before they are held in their final positions to exert pressure on the door sections.
.l The upper endsvof the rods 9 arev forked or split asshown at 11, and the. armsv caused to-'befformed by the split kor bifurcation straddlebolts 12, which. project from the side of the car adjacent the upper part of the l door opening. `Suitable washers 13 are appliedvtothe bolts 12', and threaded upon the bolts are nuts 14, which bear against the washers, which in turn bear upon the forked or split ends of the rods, in them in place. 5
- In fact when the door sections are positioned in the door opening, the normally order to hold arcuately shaped rods are `moved towardl a and in contactwith the door sections, so thatthey will apply pressure on allsections olt the door, when the sections are in position, 'for the purpose of holding them in place.
By loosening the nuts the upper ends of the rods will swing outwardly, in fact the entire length of the rods will' swing` outwardly, leaving the door sections freek to be moved, by first removing the top section, then the next section, and then the lower section. ln fact the top Section may irst be removed, and the next two sections raised, and then it' desired the rods may be again clamped. in position.` In this' way the remaining. sections will beheld in place, leaving an 'opening .at the bottom previously closed'by the lowersection, allowing the grain to flow frointhe lower 'part of the opening. rThis may be done, until the greater-bulk or' the grain is ie1noved,`then all oi: the sections may be removedy by loosening' the holding rods.
TheV invention-having been set forth, what is claimed l'is 1 y The lcombinationA with a grain car having a door opening, of a grain door mounted in said opening, a pairofmembers.securedv to the car body at points below the opening;- and' adjacent its ends, said members and means on the bolts for holding the fork ed ends in place.
, In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix myy signature.
