HAND P1-lanen.
Original application filed August 7, 1919, Serial No. 315,986.` Divided and this application led June 30,v
v1921. Serial No. 481,678.
To (lf/y whom. fait may concern Be it known that we, JOHN F. HoYand .loi-1N C. VHrrnsnLL, Jr., citizens` of the United States, residing` at Norristown, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Planers, of which the following is a specification, the same being a division of our application for Letters Pat-ent filed August 7, 1919, and serially numbered 315,986.
rl`his invention relates to the tvpe of planer shown and described in Letters .Patent No. 1,281,207 and has for its leading; object to improve the mouth piece construction thereof so as to cominercially better this type of planer. Othe' and further objects relate to the provision of certain new and novel arrangements, connections and combinations of parts for attainingthe ends sought by said leadingv object. l
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed. y
`The nature. characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying` draw/*ings forming' part hereof, and in which:
Figli. 1, is a longitudinal sectional view of a planer embodying' features of the invention. and
F 2,. is an end view of Fig. 17 viewed fromY the lefthand side. y
F or the purpose of illustrating our invention` we have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by us, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although itis to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention. is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
,In the drawings 10 designates the supporting;4 frame of the planer the two-part central base of which is designated 11--127 the part 1l being;` movable with respect to part 12. The function of the movable base part is to regulate depth of cuts as will be hereinafter more fully described. The base as a whole isti-at from end to end of the planer andsaid base parts have fixed thereto rigid shoes 'designated 13--14- respectively. The baseparts arespaced from one another f to provide an opening-inwhich operates a cutter 15 fixed to a driven shaft 1G. Rotary motion is imparted to said shaft through Vthe instrumentality of a train `of gear wheels interposed between said shaft and an electric motor 17. rl`he shaft 16 is so mounted with respect to frame-10 as to be capable of being' adjusted in a substantially vertical manner to compensate for wear of the knives 1S of the rotary cutter. A description will now be given of means for adjustinoI the movable base part toward and away from the rotary cutter for obtz'iining difforent depths of cuts. rl`he forward portion of the frame of the planer is provided with grooved ways 19. see Fig'. 2. which incline downwardly toward the critter. Adapted to track in such ,qrooved ways are the uprights 2() of the movable base partI` which as shown in said ligure is substantially U-shaped in cross-section. Rotatably mounted in the frame of the planer. is a hand wheel 2l provided with a screw-threaded stem 2Q which engages a nut 23 iiXed to the movable base part. By adjusting' the movable base part along' the said incline toward the rotary cutter the sole of said base part may be caused to lie in the same plane with the sole of the iiXed base part so that practically no cut may be effected. By proper adjustments in the opposite direction the sole of the movable base part is caused to lie in planes above thcplanc of the fixed sole so that cuts of different depths ma)v be effected. rlhe adjustments may be effected while the planer .is in operation. Y
lt will now be apparent that we have jointl)Y devised a novel asd useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while we have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactorv and reliable results` it is Vto be understood that the saine is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departineY from the spirit moves the movable bese' mirtillo-ng said Ways' to and from the plane ot the fixed base part.
