To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Aoonrrr GEIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Extracting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the san'ie, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
This invention has to do with means for extracting nails and the like from the articles or material in which they have been imbedded, the chief object of the, invention being to provide a compact, practical machine of this variety combining with these advantages convenience, rapidity and economy in operation afforded by a construction and arrangen'ient of partsffacilitating the handling of the article or material contain ing the nails and the collection and salvaging of the latter, To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improve ments and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

The present embodiment of the invention shows the same as applied to the purpose of extracting nails from partly manufactured shoe heels preliminary to finishing operations on the latter, although it is to be understood that thejinvention is by no means limited to this use but is capable of adaptation to various other ends. It is a common practice for manufacturers of shoe heels to make up the same in a plurality of plies or lifts of leather or other material cemented together, and secured-by means of a nail until the cement sets the heel being supplied in this unfinished state to the shoe manufacturer who finishes the same in the Benewed September 5, 1922. fashion desired and secures it to the shoe by means of additional nails surrounding that holding the lifts together. As the cross seetional area of the heel through which these additional nails must be driven is small, especially in the high heels of womens shoes such additional nails frequently contact with the lift securing nail, become bent and deflected through the side of the heel, thus defacing the latter and breaking the edge of the heel trimming knife. It has been found convenient to extract the securingnail before supplying the heel to the shoe manufacturer, to which end a nail is used long enough to leave its head projecting after being driven through the lifts, and the present embodiment of the invention is particularly adapted for extracting this securing nail from the heel.
To this end there is provided a base or bed plate 10, Figure 2, preferably supported at its forward end by foot 11, and at its rear end by a leg 12 so that the base is given a downward inclination toward its forward end for a purpose which will presently be made clear. Rising from the base is a frame 13 having projecting from its forward end a bracket bearing let in which is adjustably clamped by means of a hand screw 15 a post 16, carrying at its upper end a work table 17 having the same inclination as the-base of the machine. The heel 18, with the nail to be extracted 19, is placed by hand on the table 17, adjacent the forward end of an enclosing and supporting housing indicated generally at 20 carried at the top of frame 13. Housing 20 comprises preferably a bottom 21 and side 22 to which are secured front and rear end plates 23 and 2% respectively secured there to as by means of the screws 25. y
The forward end plate 23 is provided adjacent its center with an opening 26 with which are aligned, within housing 20, nail clamping means comprising a pair of relatively movable clamping jaws 27 and 28, Figures and 4, preferably pivotally connected at their rear ends as by means of the pin 29. Jaw 27 is grooved on its top and bottom to provide bearing surfaces 80, Figure 1, with which engage correspondingly formed surfaces on guide rails 31 and 32 respectively, the latter being supported on the end plates 23 and 24 by means of the screws 25. The clamping jaws are provided on the adjacent sides of their forward ends with nail gripping teeth 33, and the jaws are preferably urged away from each other, to separate the teeth preliminary togripping or releasing the nail, by means of a coil spring 34 seated in on the adjacent sides of the jaws.
The means. for moving the jaws toward each other to clamp a nail comprise, preferably, aroller 35 rotatably carried by jaw 23 in position for cooperation with the face of a cam bar 36 having ends and a projecting central portion, which is adjustably supported by means of slots 37 therein embracing the upper ends of screws 38 threadedly engaging lugs or bosses 38 on the housing bottom 21, Figure 5, on which the cam rests. Set screws 39, threadedly engaging in openings in side 22 of housing 20, are provided for advancing and supporting cam 36 against the pressure of roller 35 produced by spring 34, and the set screws may be locked in adjusted position by means of locking nuts 40, after which the cam itself may be clamped in place by means ofthe screws 38.
It is apparent from the above construction that as the clamping jaws are moved on theirguideways, toward and through opening 26 in the forward end plate, roller 35 rides over a depressed portion of the cam face at its forward end and the jaws are opened by spring 34 to engage over the head of a nail positioned at the forward side of the opening. As the clamping jaws are then moved rearwardly, roller 35 rides upon a raised or projecting portion of the face of the cam moving jaw 28 so that the jaws grip the nail with greater or less pressure depending upon the adjustment of the cam, which of course may be set for pulling nails of various sizes. The cam maintains the teeth of the jaws in gripping .relation with the nail during the rearward movement of. the jaws for a sufficient distance to extract the nail after which the roller encounters depressed portion at the rear of the cam and allows spring 34 to separate the teeth so that the nails drop through an opening in the bottom 21 of the housing, as described hereafter. j j

The means for reciprocating the nail clamping means or jaws comprises preferably a trunnion 41 carried by jaw 27, on which is rotatably mounted a bearing block 42 slidingin a slot .43 extending from the top adjacent the bottom of a lever 44 fixed at its lower end on a' shaft 45 rotating in bearings in frame 13. Sliding in the lower portion of slot 43 is a bearing block 46 rotatably can'ied on a wrist pin 47 ona gear 48 fixed on a shaft 49 (Figure 3) rotating in a bearing 50 on a web shaped framepart 51 secured at its'base .bymea-ns of screws 52 on a seat formed on frame 13 and the base 10. Meshing with gear 48 is a pinion depressed" 53 fixed on a shaft 54 rotating in a bearing 55 on frame 51 and a bearing 55 on frame 13, shaft 54 carrying on its outer end tight and loose pulleys 56 where it is desired to operate the machine by means of a belt drive.
The operation of the jaw reciprocating means, as indicated by the above construction, comprises the driving or rotation of gear 48by the means described, whereby lever 44 is oscillated on its pivotand thus oscillates the. clamping means through its trunnion and block connection therewith, and it is apparent that, since gear 48 rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 2, the varying distance of the gear wrist pin from the lever during the for ward and rearward strokes of the latter produces aslow' rearward movement of the clamping'jaws to grip the nail, draw the heel or other object against stop plate. 23, and extract the nail without injury to the heel, followed by a quick return; of the (lumping jaws to position for clamping'the nail of the next heel placed in position.
As shown in Figures. 3 and 4 the bottom 21 of housing 20 has an opening 57 therein adjacent the position of the nail at the time the latter is released by the clamping jaws, so that the nail is dropped through this opening, falling into a collecting trough in dicated generally at 57, secured within frame 13 as by means of screws 58 and com prising a downwardly inclined portion 59 extending toward the rear of the machine and emptying into an inclined portion 60 turned laterally through an opening 60 in the frame and thus discharging the nail conveniently at the. side of the machine into any suitable receptacle which may be provided.
The side 22 of housing 20 carries a pair of spaced lugs 61 rotatably and firmly supporting a rod 62 having thereon an arm '63 carrying a movable cover plate 64 for closing the top of the housingand providing convenient access to the operating parts.
In operation, cam 36 having been adjusted by the means described to correspond with the-size of thenail to be extracted, and table 17 having been adjusted'vertically to suit the object or material so as to bring the nail opposite the opening through which jaws are projected, the machine is started, and the heels or other objects are placed by hand on table 17 with the object adjacent the stop plate 23 and the nailtoward the opening. Upon the forward stroke of the jaws the latter are opened and then. closed to grip the nail which is pulled rearwardly bringing the heel against the sto plate whereit is arrested while the. jaws pull the nail longitudinally from the material without injuring the latter. 3 The object, having been released, falls by gravity from table 17 due to theinclination of the latter, so
that once the nail has been gripped by the jaws the operator then may quickly proceed to place the next heel in position on the table. The extracted nail is carried over the opening in the bottom of the housing and dropped into the collecting trough'by which it is discharged at the side of the machine into any suitable receptacle. As apparent from the drawings, the machine is compact and pleasing in appearance and practical and durable in construction. The adjustment of the parts to suit the work in hand is conveniently made and the arrangement of the machine at an inclination affords automatic gravity discharge of the articles, thus saving the time of the operator The extracted nails are economically and conveniently collected and salvagec, which amounts to a considerable saving in the course of operation.
I claim as my invention: j
1. A. machine for extracting nails from articles comprising stationary supporting means for the articles arranged to effect gravity discharge of the latter, reciprocating nail clamping meanaa-djustable controlling means for said clamping means operated by the reciprocation of the latter to cause'the same to grip and release the nails, and rotary means for actuating said reciprocating means. c

In a machine for extracting nails from articles, stationary supporting means for the article, reciprocating nail clamping means provided with pivotally connected jaws, means comprising a cam for closing said jaws to grip the nails operated automatically by the reciprocation of said clamping means, and rotary actuating means for reciprocating said clamping means.
In a machine for extracting nails from articles, supporting means for the article, nail clamping means comprising relatively movable jaws, actuating means for reciprocating said clamping means, controlling means for said clamping means for separating said jaws at both extremes of reciprocation and for intermediately closing the same to grip and release the nails, and means for collecting and discharging the nails.
5. In a machine for extracting nails from articles, supporting means for the article, nail clamping means comprising relatively movable jaws, means for separating said jaws, cam means for closing said jaws to grip the nails, and actuating means for re ciprocating said clamping means operating to move the latter slowly to extract the nails with a quick return to nail clamping position.

In a machine for extracting nails from articles, article supporting means comprising a stop plate provided with an opening and an inclined table adapted to effect gravity discharge of the articles, nail clamping means, means for reciprocating said clamping means through said plate opening, and controlling means for said clamping means actuating the latter to clamp a nail when projected through said opening and to release the nail at the other extremity of movement.

In a machine for extracting nails from articles, supporting means for the articles comprising a stop plate provided with an aperture, nail clamping means comprising relatively movable members, actuating means for reciprocating said clamping means toward and from said stop plate, stationary cam means for automatically moving said members toward each other during reciprocation oi said means to clamp a nail adjacent said plate opening, and means for separatin said members to release the nails,
8. n a machine for extracting nails from articles, article supporting means comprising a stop member, nail clamping means comprising relatively movable clamping members, actuating means for reciprocating said clamping means toward and from said stop member, and controlling means for said clamping members comprising a stationary cam co-operating therewith to automatically move the same to nail clamping'relation adjacent said stop member and to release the same adjacent their opposite extremity oil movement. a

In a machine for extracting nails from articles, article supporting means comprising a stationary stop member, nail clamping means comprising pivotally connected jaws, actuating means for reciprocating said jaws toward and from said stop member, resilient means for separating said jaws, and an adjustably mounted cam operating automatically to close said jaws adjacent said stop member to clamp the nails and to release said jaws at the other extremity of movement thereof to release the nails.

In a machine for extracting nails from objects, object supporting means, nail clamping means comprising reciprocable, relatively movable members and means for moving the latter to alternately clamp and release the nails, and actuating means for said clamping means comprising a pivotally sup ported lever connected with said clamping means, a rotary member connected with said lever to oscillate the same, and driving means for said rotary member.

In a machine for extracting nails from objects, object supporting means, nail clamping means comprising reciprocable, relatively movable members and means for moving the latter to alternately clamp and release the nails, and actuating means for said clamping means comprising a slotted, pivotally supported lever, a connection between said clamping means and a slotted portion of said lever, a rotary member also connected with aslotted portion of said lever, and driving means for said rotary member.

In a machine for extracting nails from objects, object upporting means, nail clamping means comprising reciprocable, relatively movable members and means for mov ing the latter to alternately clamp and release the nails, and actuating means for said clamping means comprising a slotted, pivotally supported lever, a trunnion on said clamping means, a bearing block on said trunnion sliding in the slot of said lever, a wheel having a wrist pin and a bearing block on the pin also sliding in the slot of said lever, and driving means for said wheel.

A nail extracting machine comprising a stationary work supporting abutment, means having a movement toward and from said abutment and provided with relatively movable nail gripping parts, and a device actuated by the movement of said means for operating said parts to grip a nail carried by the work for extracting the same during the movement of said means.

A nail extracting machine comprising a frame having a work support, reciprocating means provided with relatively movable parts for gripping and extracting a nail from the work during movement of said means away from said support, cooperating parts on said frame and means for operating said gripping parts during reciprocation of said means, and mechanism for reciprocating the latter.

In' a nail extracting machine, the combination of a frame provided with a guideway, a work support on the frame, a member slidable in said guideway toward and from said support and provided with relatively movable nail gripping jaws, a cam and follower, one. cofwhich is carried by said memher and the other by said frame for automatically operating said jaws during movement of said member, and mechanismrfor actuating the latter to grip and extract a nail from the work.
17. In a nail extracting machine, the combination of a frame provided with a guideway, a stationary work support on the frame, a member slidable in said guideway toward and from saidsupport and provided with relatively movable, spring actuated gripping jaws, a cam and follower, one of which is carried by said member and the other by said frame for automatically operating said jaws during movement of said member' to grip and release a'nail, and rotary driving mechanism for moving said member to extract a nail.
