HANDLE FOR LIFTING JACKS.
Application filed January 26, 1921. Serial No. 440,010.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY FREDERICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Handle for Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pneumatic lifting jacks and has as its primary object the provision or such a ack particularly adaptable to automobile use and which may be operated by the usual tire pump. I v e 'A further object of the invention is to provide a jack which will be raised by air or other fluid under pressureand' held in raised position until the fluid pressure is released.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel longitudinally adjustable and tfoldable handle for association with. the jack in placing the same in proper position beneath the automobile, thus obviating the diiiiculty of crawling beneath the automobile.
lVith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts and op erations to be more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a pneumatic jack embodying my improvement, parts being broken away;
Figure 2 a plan view of the longitudinally adjustable handle for association with the jack, having parts'shown in cross section;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same in folded position; and
l igm-e t is an end elevation.
Referring in detail to the drawing wherein similar characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the several views,
the numeral 5 designates a base formed with an interiorly threaded nipple or collar 6 upon its upper face. 'Ihreadedly engaged with the nipple (S is a barrel or cylinder 7 upon the upper end of which a cap 8 is threaded. Reciprocable in the cylinder 7 is a piston rod 9 which passes through the cap 8 and carries, at its upper end, a lifting head 10, the latter being threadedly engaged with the piston rod 9 as clearly shown in Figure 1. Thus the head 10 may be removed when damaged and a new one applied to the rod 9.
Formed with the lower end of the piston rod 9 is a' piston section 11 which carries a hit-' erally disposed pin 12 at one'side thereof.
A second piston section, designated at 13, is
provided with an opening 14 through which the pin 12 extends. Interposed between the sections 11 and 13 is a packing washer 15. A bolt 16 passes through the section 13, the packing washer 15 and has threaded engagement with the piston section 11.
It will be seen that upon tightening of the bolt 16, the packing washer 15 will be forced againstthe sides of the, barrel or cylinder? it will be seen also that the pin 12 which passes through the packing washer 1.5 and the piston section 13, serves to hold these parts against axial movement.
The base 5 is provided with a passageway 17 and comn'lunicating with this passageway is an L-coupling 18 to which a flexible hose or pipe 19 is connected. Carried by the outer end oi the flexible pipe or hose 19 is a control valve or cock 20 and carried by the valve 20 is an air check valve 21 adapted to be connected with any suitable pump.
.t will be obvious that upon opening the valve 20, compressed air or other fluid will be conducted through the pipe 19 and l'lmv into the barrel T to lift the piston to the desired height. When in this position, the valve 20 will prevent the fluid irom escaping, thus holding the piston in raised position. Just as soon as the valve 20 is moved to open position, the air will be released and the piston caused to descend. A handle 21' is carried by the barrel or cylinder 7 whereby the'jack may be carried from one point to another.
In order to place the jack beneath the vehicle without crawling under the same, I have provided an extensible and toldable handle which comprises a. pair of rod sec-- tions 22 and 23, the' former being provided with a handle 2% at one end and the latter being provided with an upstanding lug at its forward end adapted to be received in an outstanding sleeve :26 secured upon one side of the cylinder. The rear end of this section posed stirrup or U shaped member if? in which the section 22 normally rests.
Slida-bly mounted on the section is sleeve 28 which has pivotal connection with the forward end of the section 23, as shown at 29.
It will be manifest that the sections 252 is "formed with a laterally disand 23 may be moved longitudinally with respect to each other in order to permit the handle to reach any desired point beneath the vehicle and further, the section 23 may be folded upon the section 22 as shown in Figure 3 When not in use.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted sections one. of which bein arovided with a handle atone end and the other carrying a vertically disposed lug at its forward end for engagement n the sleeve, :1 stirrup extending laterally from the opposite end of the last mentioned section in which the other section is slidably received, and a slidable and pivotal connection between the two sections whereby to permit the rod sections to be moved longitudinally With respect to each other and to be folded one upon the other when not in use.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of rod sections, a sleeve slidably mounted upon one of the rod sections and having pivotal connection with one end of the other rod. section, a U shaped element extending laterally from the first mentioned rod section in which the other section is slidablyengaged, and a lug extending from the forward end of the first mentioned. section to be received in a sleeve attached to a member tobe carried.
