LEVI L. ROBERTSON, 0F MADISON, MINNESOTA.
ATTACHMENT FOR SCREEN DOORS. *1
Application filed April 15,
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnvi L. Ronnnrsonya citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Lac qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for Screen Doors, of which the followin; is a specification. i
This invention relates to an attachment for a screen door and hasfor. its principal object to provide a fly curtain which when properly attached to the screen door will prevent the flies from flying into the house as the screen door is opened to allow persons to pass by I Another object of the invention is to provide means which will neatly roll the curtain on a drum when the door is in a closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of extremely simple, durable and inexpensive construction, one which is eliicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door frame and door showing my invention attached thereto,
Figure 2 is a top tain,
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the upper portion of the door frame and door showing my attachment thereon,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal fragmentary section taken through the curtain drum.
Figure 5 is a section taken on the line 55 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the portiere member.
Figure 7 is a transverse section taken through the curtain and roller, portions of the door and frame being shown, and
Figures 8 and 9 are plan views of the brackets used in connection with the invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will plan view of the fly curbe seen that 1 designates the door frame which is of conventional construction and has hinged thereto the screen door 2 which is 1921. Serial No. 461,810.
also of conventional construction. Adjacent the upper end of the doorirame 1 there is mounted the brackets 3 and 1 for receiving the rod 5 one end'of which is squared so as to fit snugly in the square slot 6 in bracket d thereby preventing its rotation. A conical shaped drum 7 is rotatably mounted on the rod 5 and at its larger end is provided with the block 8 which acts as a brace therefor. A spring casing 9 is suitably iixed to the block 8 by means of screws 10 and is provided with a groove upon its outer periphery as indicated at 11. A spring 12 is mounted in the casing 9 and is fixed thereto as is shown at 18 in Figure 5 whereas its inner end passes through the rod A sheet of foraminous material such as screening 1 1 is adapted to be wound upon the conical shaped drum 7 and suitably fixed thereto. One transverse edge of this sheet 14 is fixed to the upper edge of the screen door 2. As the door 2 is opened the sheet 141 will be unwound from the drum 7 and at the same time the coil spring 12 will be wound tightly so that when the door 2 is released this spring will cause the same to close through the intermediacy of the drum 7 and its sheet 1 1.
An eye 15 is attached tothe screen door 2- in alignment with the sheet 1 1 so as to receive the cable 16 which is adapted to be wound in the groove 11 on the spring cas- 9. An eye pin 17 is situated on the frame 1 so that its eye will. extend over the groove 11 as shown to advantage in Figure 1 and the cable 16 will pass therethrough. A portiere member 18 is suitably disposed on the cable 16 between the eye pin 17 and the eye 15. In the present instance this portiere member 18 consists of a plurality of ropes 19 slidably mounted on the cable 16 by means of the eyes 20. A cord 21 connects each of the eyes 20 and is fixed at one end to the eye pin 17 and at its other end to the eye 15. As the screen door opens it will be seen that these ropes 19 will be evenly spaced along the cable 16 as shown to advantage in Figure 1 and tend to prevent the flies from entering the house over the persons head who is passing through the doorway. As the door is closed the cable 16 will wind on the spring casing 9 in groove 11 while the rope 19 of the portiere member 18 will be brought together and not be allowed to wind about the spring casing.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the mechanism will be readily understood without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is: p
1. In combination, a door, a frame therefor, a conical drum rotatably mounted in the door frame, a sheet connected to the top portion of the door and adapted to Wind upon the'drum, and a porticre member connected to the door and adapted to be Wound upon the drum.
2. In combination, a door, a door frame therefor, means at the top of the door and door frame for preventing the passage of flies thcrebetween, and a portiere' member comprising a cable, a plurality of ropes slidably mounted on the cable, means for connecting the ropes to each other and to the door and to the door frame, and means for Winding the cable as the door is closed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
