UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE DUTEN, O1 LEVALLOISPERRET, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO LA SOCIETE DUTEN, DOUBLE! & cm, OF PARIS, SEINE, FRANCE, SIEGE SOCIAL.
CONTACT BREAKER FOR MAGNETOS.
Application filed March 30, 1921.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, MAURICE DU'I'EN, citizen of the Republic of France, and resident of Levallois-Perret, Seine, France (post-ofiice address 54 Rue des Arts), have invented a new and useful Improvement in Contact Breakers for Magnetos, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
The present invention relates to an imroved circuit breaker for magnetos, characterized by the fact that it can be applied, irrespective of the direction of rotation, by a simple adjustment of the movable part of the device and a reversal of the platinum screw which constitutes the fixed contact.
As is well known, the magneto must turn in one direction or the other according as the motor to which it is connected rotates clockwise or counterclockwise; and it is obviously a matter of importance to enable the same circuit breaker to be utilized for either direction of rotation, the invention having this object in view as previously stated.
The invention further contemplates an improved mounting for the circuit breaker of an extremely simple character and which permits it to carry out its' function with a minimum displacement.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanyin drawing, in which igure 1 is a front elevation of the improved contact breaker;
Figure 2 a side elevatlon of the same, and
Figure 3 a plan.
The contact breaker comprises a part a which is pivoted on a pin or screw 6 removably inserted in a hole formed in the face plate or carrier disc of the device, and oscillates by reason of a cam which acts on a projecting part c which is secured to the part a, the cam rotating in the direction of the arrow 1. The part a carries at d one of the platinum contacts and the other contact e is mounted at the end of a reversible Serial No. 457,113.
screw f which is inserted through a threaded socket formed through a block 9 which is also fixed to the carrier disk. Sparking takes place when the two contacts d e are moved apart by action of the cam on the projecting part 0. The return spring It brings the parts back to the position shown in Figure 1 immediately afterwards.
If, owing to the arrangement of the magneto on the engine the rotation is in the opposite direction to that of the arrow, 1 it is only necessary to unscrew the pin 5 and mount the part a in a symmetrical position, the screw or pin being placed in the hole 1' in the carrier disc which is diametrically opposlte the first-mentioned hole. It is also necessary to unscrew the reversible screw f so as to reverse it, the contact 6 being then below the block 9 and opposite the contact (Z which at this moment is also below.
Owing to this arrangement, the operation in both directions of rotation is rendered possible with the same apparatus and it merely amounts to mounting it differently.
I claim as my invention:
A circuit breaker for magnetos, comprising a carrier having a pair of oppositely spaced holes; a pivot pin interchangeably engaged therein; a block secured to said carrier on a diameter at right angles to a line joining the holes, and provided with a threaded socket; a screw reversibly mounted in said socket and having a contact at one end; and an oscillatory lever wholly on one side of said first-named diameter and mounted intermediate its ends on said pin, said lever having adjacent one end a contact to cooperate with the first-named contact.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAURICE DUTEN.
