The object of this invention is to provide a portable electric lamp of light, compact construction so devised that the parts which might be easily broken or injured, such as the lamp bulb, wire and plug, are entirely enclosed and protected by the base and reflector when the lamp is not in use. Such a lamp is especially suitable and convenient for travelling purposes. In addition, the lamp is provided with a clamping device which is also enclosed by the base and reliector and which may be used to attach the lamp to any convenient support. The lamp being designed particularly for travelling purposes, the base and reflector, which protect the other parts are made suiciently strong to withstand considerable rough usage.
I have shown and described herein one embodiment of my invention, which is the best of which I am at present advised. This form or embodiment is used Jfor the purpose of illustration and should not be taken as limiting for obviously, the invention can be given dilierent embodiments without departing from its spirit.
The embodiment chosen for illustration is shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of the complete lamp when arranged for conveyance of the lamp;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but with the lamp arranged for illumination;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the lamp.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, except that the reflector and bulb are in illuminating position. Figs. 5 and 6 show modcations.
In the drawings, the reflector 1 encloses the lamp bulb 2, the latter being mounted on an insulated base which is built into the reector. Two metal contacts in the form of cups 4 and 5 are mounted in the insulating material of the base 3. Metallic connection is made between these cups 4: and 5 to the lamp'bulb terminals, these connectionsnotbein'g shownin the drawing. The
base o f the lamp 6 is provided with a receptacle 7 to hold the `lamp bulb and reflector when the lamp is in use, contact beingV made between the metal cups 4 and 5 and p1ns8 and'9, thev current being carried to the pinsby means of the duplex wire 10 and 11. When the lamp is not in use the duplex wire, which may be from, say eight to ten feet in length, is wrapped around the supporting arms 12 and 13, the plug at the end of the wire being forced into the space between the receptacle 7 and the arm 12.
The base of the lamp also contains a clamping device 14 which is in the position shown in Fig. 1 when it is not in use. When it is to be used it is rst revolved 900 (in a horizontal plane) on the pin 15 to the position shown at A and B, Fig. 3, which allows the clamp to clear the lamp base Vand it is then in a position to be operated. In the design shown, slots are cut in the base at 19 to allow clamp to be turned 90o. The clamp may also be constructed with a hinge attached to one arm so that by opening the hinge 180o the clamp will clear the base without having to cut away slots in the base.
The base 6 is so designed and is of such a shape that it will fit tightly over the reflector port 1 and is held in position by suitable catches 17 and 18 attached to the refiector port of the lamp. Thus, the lamp, wire and clamping device, etc., are entirely enclosed when the lamp is not in use.
When the lamp is to be used, the reector part is separated from the base, by drawing out the catch 18, and is placed in the receptacle 7 of the base part of the lamp as also shown in the drawing. It should be noted that arts contained in the base are all placed) above the bottom of the base part (the wire being passed through a small slot in the base) so that lwhen the clamping device is not used, the lamp may! be set on a table, Or any flat surface, without any parts, except the base. touching the table.
If it is found desirable, the receptacle and lamp bulb base 3 may be so constructed that the lamp bulb and reflector may be revolved, the current conducting contacts between the receptacle and the lamp bulb base would then be in the forlnof concentric rings on lamp bulb base 3 making contact with short pins on the receptacle 7- these pins being connected to the conducting Wire .in/,a similar manner to that already described.
The invention is not limited to .this particular design .or .construction but .includes any similar construction whereby the lamp bulb, Wire plug and clamping device are entirely enclosed or protected by the lamp base and reflector, also fthe :invention fis not limited to this particular size and shape of lamp bulb but would include fany fsi-ze for shape of electric lamp I'bulbin'iuse ifor lighting purposes.
