Be it known that I, CHARLns C. 'IoMKIN- son, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plaineld, county of Union, and
5 State of New Jersey, have invented certain ne7 and useful Improvements in Expansion Shields with Interlocking Caps (Case C), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to expansion bolts i0 such as are commonly anchored within bodies of solid material like concrete or masonry and is particularly concerned with the conf struction of an expansion bolt shield and with a cap piece designed for attachment thereto. t
The invention aims to provide a simple and improved form of interlocking means between the expansion shield and cap member whereby interlocking engagement may be 520 effected by moving the shield members in a plane parallel to the plane of the cap or 1n other words radially of 'the bore or opening in the same.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will appear from the detailed description thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the specifica-tion and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The expansion shield is shown as comprising two semi-cylindrical members l0. The shield may have any desired exterior configuration and it may be expanded by any suitable means,-for convenience of .illustration it has been shown as of plain cylindrical form. rIhe cap preferably comprises a plate-like member 1l of circular form, a
center opening or bore 12 being provided therein through which an expanding screw bolt `or lag screw (not shown) may be passed :as will be readily understood. Rising from the plate adjacent the opening therein is a plurality of fingers 13 which are adapted to cooperate With the members of the shield for securing interlocking engagement. In the form ofthe invention shown in Figs'. l to 3 the terminals of the lingers are bent outwardly to form hooked members 14- and `the lshieldinembers l0 are provided with perforations l5 to receive them. The shield member-s l0 are brought into interlocking engagement with the .lingers 13 by being moved toward thefingers, this movement being toward the axis of the cap bore or in other Words, in plane parallel to the plane of the cap. This manner of assembling the expan sion shield and cap provides: a connection which positively holds the cap from disassokciation 'with the shield when the latter has been inserted into the hole in the structure in which it is to ybe expanded.
In thel modiiicationshown in lFigs. 4L to L6 the lingers 13 are' provided with perforations l5k to receive radially projecting prongs let extending inwardly from the shield members 10. These prongs are preferably made by stamping out a portion of the shield walls and bending the same inwardly from the end edges of the same.
The method of assembly is the same as that of the other embodiment of the invention, namely the shield members are moved inwardly toward 'the fingers until interlock.H ing engagement is effected.
A cap of this kind covers the hole in which the expansion shield is used the end of which is apt vto be ragged and unsightly, and provides a neat finished appearance.
The form of interlocking' connection above described is particularly desirable where the parts are made of sheet metal since the iingers 14C and prongs may be stamped out of their respective members. The invention, however, is not necessarily limited to sheet metal shields and caps as will be readily understood. I, therefore, intend no limitations on the invention other than 'those imposed by the appended claims.
lWhat I claim is:
l. The combination with an expansion shield comprising a plurality of members, of a cap member having an opening therelID through,` fingers projecting fromy the cap member adjacent the opening'therein, and means between the fingers and shield members for effecting interlocking,engagement therebetween when they are moved toward the fingers.
2. The combination., withv aan expansionH shield comprising a plurality of members, of a cap member havingjan opening therethrough, ingers projecting from the cap member adjacent theopening therein, and
meansfbetween the-fingers andwshie'ld members vfor yeiiiecting interlocking engagement 'therebetween when they are moved toward the fingers, said means including prongs eX- tending from one` of said members in directions perpendicular to the axes of the shield and cap member. y
3. The combination with. an expansion shield comprising"a pair off semi-circular members, oi' a cap member having an opening therethrough, means for securing the cap member to oneend of thevshield comprising members eXtendingQradially and axially with respect to the aXes of the shield and cap, said lmembers being so.v arranged that interlocking engagement between the shield members and cap is effectedjby Inoving the :shield lmembers toward the axially projecting members.
