IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS OR OPlUM-CURES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,] 641, dated September 23, 1873 application filed August 9, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ULYSSES H. KELLOGG, of Jamestown, county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a certain Medical Compound, called Opiumfiure, to be used as a specific remedy for the cure of the opium mania, or what is usually called and known as the opium habit, and to relieve the pain and suffering usually occasioned by the long-continued use of opiates; and to enable that class of persons called opium'eaters to abandon the habit and discontinue the use of morphia or any preparation of opium; also, to be used for the cure of delirium tremens, and such other affections of the brain and nervous system as may be caused by the excessive use of opium or any preparation thereof, or of alcoholic drinks.

My invention consists in combining the active principle of wild lettuce, (Lactucin Salu- 0a, and adding thereto a tincture of bitter almonds when desirable, as hereinafter describedthat is to say, to one pound of the fluid extract of Wild lettuce (Lactucct elongate) I add one-half ounce of lactucin and onefourth ounce of salucin. To this compound I add, when desirable, one ounce of the tincture of bitter almonds. These proportions may be varied somewhat Without materially detracting from the virtues of my remedy; but, for general use and most efficient action,

I recommend the formula above given. The compound may be prepared, if desirable, in the form of pills; but, as a general rule, I prefer to use it as a solution.

For a'person in the habit of using ten grains of sulphate of morphia per day, give two fluid drains three times per day; and for persons using more or less, in same proportion, or a quantity suflicient to prevent suffering in consequence of ceasing to use morphia. In cases of the most extreme nature, when the mind is badly affected and the patient is inclined to be delirious, one-eighth of the usual quantity of morphia should be continued for from five to ten days, or until all signs of mental derangement disappear, after which time the quantity of the opium-cure is gradually reduced, and as soon as the opium or morphia becomes eliminated from the system the use of the opium-cure may be discontinued.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of Lactucct clongata, lactucin, and salucin, with or Without a tincture of bitter almonds, substantially as specified.

2. The medical compound described, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
