Application led February 18, 1920, Serial No. 359,735. Renewed April 1, 1922. Serial No. 548,798.

To all 'whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, CLEMENT LE MOINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux Cit in the county of Woodbury and State of owa, have invented certain new and vuseful Improvements in Diapers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved infants diaper and'has as one of its principal objects to provide a diaper employing an absorbent pad in connection therewith so that repeated washing of the diaper will be obviated by simply renewing the pad.

A further object of the invention in this connection is to provide a pad which will be inexpensive, whichwill readily absorb moisture, and which will tend to hold the moisi ture absorbed thereby.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a diaper which will be composed of few parts and wherein, in manufacture, the parts may be readily assembled. 4

lAnd the invention has as a still further object to provide a diaper which will fit snugly without any uncomfortable bunching or wrmkling and which, when in place, will sta fther and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.

In the drawings:

' .Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved diaper, thisV view showing the manner in which the diaper is applied.

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the llne 2-2 .of Figure 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows,

Figure 3 is a plan vlew showing the diaper laid out flat,

Figure 4 is a transverse section on the line 1 4 of Figure 3, and looking in the direction ofthe arrows, and

Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the pad of the diaper in detail.

In carrying the invention into effect, m improved diaper is formed with a body 10 whlch is preferably constructed of a single piece of suitable material reduced at its end portions to provide side flaps 11, the upper edge of the body being straight while the lower edge thereof slopes upwardly in oposite directions to the ends of said flaps.

et into ythe lower margin of the bodyfbetween the diverging portions of its lower edge is a substantially circular seat 12 from which projects a front flap 13 tapered toward its free end. The seat and front iiap the body 10,.seat 12, the

and extending along the end edges of the flaps 11, the lower edge of the body, and the edges of the flap 13 is an approvedbinding 14 which may be secured by asingle line of stitching. Fitting about the seat 12 upon the inner side of the body is a facing 15 preferably of some soft material. This facing extends at its ends tb-the bases of the iiaps 11 and is secured to the body at its upper 'and end edges by a single line of stitching 16 while at its lower edge, the portions of the facing at opposite sides of the seat are secured by the line of stitching holding the binding 14. Overlying the seat upon its inner side as well as covering the inner face of the shield 17.' This shield is preferably formed of sheet rubber, although other non-absorb ent material may be employed, and the ciri cular portion of the edge of said shield lis secured by a single line of stitchingl18 which also serves to secure the circular portion of the lower edge of the facing 15. The side and end-edges of the shield are held by the line of stitching. securing thebinding 14.v Thus, it will be seen that in all but` five piecesv of material are employed, namely, binding 14, the facing 15, and the shield 17. .Further, as will also be noted, but three lines of stitching are used to secure the several parts together.

A pad 19 is employed. This to t the seat 12 and iia shield 17 and is preferab tissue or ber. It has tice that this material is so that, as a conse irritate the skin w front flap 13 is a said material is highly absorbent. Furtherf more, such material tends, ina-.marked deree, to hold moisture absorbed thereby. ccordingl a pad formed of this material is highly i eal entinvention.

In Figure 1 I have shown the manner in which the diaper is applied. Initially, the pad is arranged in position over the shield 17 when the body 10 of the diaper is then folded about the hips of the infant so that the side iiaps- 11 are brought into overlapping relation. The front fia 13. is then folded .upwardly between the lJegsover the side flaps, when all of the flaps may be secured by a singles'afety pin.

for the purposes of the pres- This safety' pin will thus serve to also secure the pad 19 pad may be used whenever an old pad has 20 so that the pad will be heldin place over become soiled. This may be done at very the shield. Thus, under normal conditions, little expense in View of the peculiar mateonly the pad will be wet or soiled and when rial from which the pad is formed, such 5 this occurs, the pad may simply be removed material being very inexpensive.

and a new pad substituted therefor. Con- I-Iaving thus described the invention, what 25 sequently, repeated washing of the diaper is claimed as new is: will `be eliminated. The shield will, of 1 In a diaper, a body having its end por-v course, prevent wetting of any of the cloth tions forming side flaps, a seat formed from 10 :off the diaper While the facing 15 will prea piece of material separate from the body sent a soft surface tothe skin.
