TAG.

application flied epteinber 7, 1920. Serial tto. Matta.'

To all whom it mag/concern:

Be it known that l, lil HUBERT GINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county 'of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful 'improvements in 'ILags7 of which the following is a specification.v

rl`he present invention relates to tags or' the character to contain indicia andv removably attachable to an element, that is, of acharacter for temporary use in contradistinction to those which are used in a more permanent manner. The tag is particularly well adapted for use to contain indicia pertinent to repair jobs, ownership, or advertising matter associated with automobiles.

The principal objects of the invention are, to provide tags which may he readily attached to elements, such as the rim of an automobile steering wheel, without the use of cords, straps, metallic fasteners or similar devices and which, when in place, are not apt to become disconnected from the element by vibration, wind, or ordinary engagement with the tag by a person working in or about the automobile; to provide tags which are complete with the exception ot indicia or delineations desired thereon, but which may be run through the printing press, stamping or embossing machine, without liability ot mutilation of plates, dies, or other parts of the machines, as is likely to occur where tags with fasteners in part or wholly ot metal are used, or where a plurality ot'plies of material occur at diderent portions of the tag; and, to provide tags which are simple in formation, inexpensive to manufacture and neat in appearance.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:

lFigure i is altace view of a tag embodying the invention.

Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, por tions being flexed out of their natural position in order to disclose details.

llig. 3 is a fragmentary face view ot a portion of the tag showing it partly in operative relation to an element, such as the rim of a steering wheel ot an automobile.

ln the drawings, where similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the views, 4L- designates the body oit the tag which may be wholly or in part of heavy paper, cardv board, stift' cloth, leather or similar exible portion of an element, such as the rim l ot a steeringv wheel of an automobile, a portion of the rinrbeing designated by 6. The body of the tag is also provided with a way or cut 7 leading from the margin of the tag to the perforation 5, to permit of ready placing and removal of the tag by flexing portions of the body, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 ol" the drawings.

ln the preferred embodiment of the invention, the body is formed of a single sheet of flexible material, of uniform thickness, elongated and substantially rectangular in shape, the opening or perforation 5 being adjacent one end of the tag. l't desired, the corners of the tag adjacent the opening or perforation may be clipped as indicated at 8.

lt is also preferred to 'forni the wall 9 ot opening 5 with inwardly extending projections l0, that is, make the wall corrugated, which adds to the appearance of the tag, and also has a tendency to prevent swinging movement of the tag, when attached to the rim of an automobile steering wheel, thus reducing the liability ot the tags becoming disengaged 'from the wheel by wind forces coming thereupon.

The way 7 leading from the marginal portion of the tag to the opening or perforation 5 may be conveniently formed by merely cutting the body of the tag from the marginal portion to the opening, thus presenting separable arms'll which, when engaging one another, embrace the element extending through opening or perforation 5. is preferred to torni this way 7 ot tortuous formation, so that when the arms 1l engage there are interiitting tongues l2 and recesses i3, which more effectively loclr the arms ll in embracing relation to the element entending through the opening or perforation 5. lt is preferred to have this way Z lead -from one corner of the tag, with its general line of direction diagonally to the opening or perforation 5. Thus, when placing thetag the user may grasp it in a manner that merely one of the arms ll engage the element to which the tag is to be attached, and by bringing pressure upon the other arm ll, the latter may be swung outof engagement with its cooperating arm and the tag shifted so that a twisting movement will dispose the element wholly in the opening lilo 14, and delineations 15, which may bel printed, embossed, or otherwise applied thereto, suitable for indicating ownership, computing charges or .other data. The tag may merely have printed thereon advertising matter and it is to be noted that the tags may be readily run through a printing press, typewriter, or other machines without liability of mutilating the type, plates, or parts of the machine, and printing may even be disposed over that portion of the tag, wherein the Way 7 is disposed.

While there is herein disclosed a tag of a specific shape, it is to be understood that this is merely by wayof example, since -the tag may be of'any desired general outline and may have attached thereto other elements, if desired, without de arting from the spirit of the invention \-as efined Yin the appended claims. y

. I claim:

l. A tag including a flexible but relatively st-iil' sheet like portion provided with an opening inwardly of its margins having a corrugated wall, and a way leading from the margin of the sheet to said opening.

2. A tag including a flexible but relatively stiff body portion having a corrugated opening in one end thereof, and a tortuous way leading from a side of said opening diagonally to a corner of said body portion, said tortuous way formed to provide interfitting arms in said body ortion adapted to cooperate in retaining t e tag upon an element.
