MORRIS P. HOLMES, 0F CLAREMON T, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR, BY MESN E ASSIGN MEN TS, TO THE JEFFREY MANUFACTURING- COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A
- CORPORATION OF OHIO.
Application filed November 27, 1908, Serial No. 464,723.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORRIS P. HOLMES, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, county of Sullivan, and State of New Ham )shire, have invented an Improvement in ldining Machines, of which the fOllOWiIlg description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention relates to minin machines, being more particularly intendet to provide improved means for feeding and guiding a mining machine while it performs the cutting operation.
l\ y invention will be best understood by reference to the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying illustration of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows in plan, partially broken away, a mining machine embodying one form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a central sectional plan on the line 2-2 in Fig. 4; showing the speed reduction gearing for the cable winding drum on the machine of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevation, partially in section. showing the mining machine of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 shows an elevation, in section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3 partially broken away, of the same mining machine, and
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are diagrams showin the mining machine of Fig. 1 as arranged for executing the main cut, loading movement and starting cut, respectively.
Referring to the drawings and to the embodiment of my invention which is therein shown, I have there disclosed, for the sake of illustration one concrete form of my invention, a mining machine of the well-known cuttcr chain type provided with the cutter bar 1 projecting therefrom and. adapted to undercut the wall of the mine with ahorizontal kert' as the machine is moved trans vcrsely to the direction of the cutter bar length or in the direction of the/arrow shown in Fig. 1.
The cutter bar, as usual carries a suitable cutter chain 2 provided with the usual cutters 3 and is driven from the drivin Sprocket wheel 4 (Fig. 3). The latter is mounted to be driven by means of the-large MINING MACHINE Renewed February 25, 1920. Serial No. 361,110.
beveled gear 5 which meshes with the beveled pinion 6, the latter secured to the rear end of the armature shaft 7 of the horizontally disposed electric driving motor, the frame of which is shown at 8.
lVhile any suitable construction may be employed for traversing the machine while cutting, in the present instance supportin means are provided upon and with whicl i the machine is adapted to move along the mine, and preferabl as in the machine of the prior patent to M itchell No. 656,414, such means is provided in the form of a bottom member or shoe 9 upon which the machine is adapted to slide and, if desired, directly upon the bottom or floor of the mine.
In order to hold the cutter chain and the cutter bar in the desired relation against the work as the machine is fed along, guiding means are provided, the same herein consisting of ropes, cables or other flexible guiding members kept under tension and so associated with the machine that the cutter bar, as it travels, is held up to the work without the necessary use of rails or other like guiding supports.
In the illustrated form of my invention I provide for this purpose flexible guiding means, herein in the form of a wire rope or cable comprising two portions or lengths 10 and 11, both connected to a fixed support, one on the advancing side of the machine and the other on the receding side thereof, and one connected to the machine relatively adjacent its wall or cutting end and the other relatively near the opposite end thereof.
Suitable operating means are employed for the flexible guiding means, the same preferably comprising a feed operating member, herein in the form of a single winding drum 12, rotatable on a horizontal axis and havin at one end a cable 10 fixedly secured hereto, and at the opposite end a cable 11 fixedly secured thereto, so that as one cable winds on the drum the other unwinds, thereby utilizing the same winding surface for the two cables.
Since one of the flexible members has its end fixedly secured to the drum adiacent one end of the latter and one end of the other member is fixedly secured to the drum adjacent the other end of the latter, the arrangement is such that as one winds onto the drum theother unwinds, the action being entirely automatic, and requiring no attention whatever on the part of the mp erator.
While either cable might be secured to its fixed support, in the present machine (see Fig. 5) the cable It), in making the main or lateral cut, extends directly from the drum 12 to and about a guiding sheave l3 and thence back to the machine to which the free end of the cable is fastei'ied at the oint 14 (Fig. l). The sheave [3 is fixedly i'ield at the end of the coal face by any suitable means, as by the anchor l5, which may be of the construction shown in the aforesaid Mitchell patent.
The cable l1 also in passing from the machine leads directly from the drum 1:? to a guiding sheave 16 at the receding side of the machine and thence hack to the ma chine where its free end is securely tastened to a feed controlling member, herein in the form of an adjustable take-up drum 17 (Fi s. l and 2), the latter herein being rotatab e on a vertical axis at the rear of the machine or that end opposite the wall or cutting end.
Such take-up drum is provided with means to hold it in position while permitting adjustment to take in or let out the free end of the cable. Such means herein comprise the ratchet wheel 18 fixedly secured to the drum and holding the drum against unwinding movement through the action of the locking dog 19. A ratchet lever 20 is also provided with a pivotally mounted pawl 21 engaging the ratchet 18, the mechanism is thus so arranged that the drum may be turned step-by-step to take in the trailing cable 11 or, by temporarily withdrawing the dog 19 from the ratchet, the drum may be allowed to turn under control of the ratcheting lever to slacken out the trailing cable to any desired extent.
While my invention contemplates various connections for the take-up cable capable of producing the functions desired, in the present instancethe sheave 16 is mounted upon the fixed jack-or support 22 arranged substantially in line with the winding drum 12 and the trailingcable pg ssesfrom such sheave to an adjacent sheave 23 fixed substantially in line with the take-up drum 17 on the machine.
In order to so plement the action of the take-up drum, i and when necessary, and
. to take up the cable 11; by means apart from the machine, means may be rovided for adjusting one or bothof the guiding sheaves 16 and 23 and herein for such purposes the sheave 23, is shown to be secured to the short length of cable chain 24 and the latter passes about the sprocket wheel of an adjustable take-up jack conventionally indicated in Fig. 5 and having a construction thereof.
which may be similar to that of the take-up jack shown in Figs. 1b and l7 of the aforesaid Mitchell patent.
it will be seen that the cable portion ltJ, when placed under tension, is so connected to the machine as to exert its draft upon the same adjacent the wall end of the machine, while the resultant draft or effective connection to the machine of the double cable portion 11 is nearer the opposite end With the two cable portions, there-- fore, placed under tension, and with the cutter chain in position against the work, they serve to hold the cutter bar against the work as the machine travels along and in a position which can be regulated by taking in or letting out the trailing cable 11 to swing the machine more or less about its connection to the advancing cable 10 as a fulcrum. Obviously, the leverage of the arrangement might be increased by so guiding the trailing cable rearwardly from the drum as to leave the machine, as well as return to the same, adjacent the outer end instead of leaving it near the inner or cutting end, but for ordinary purposes the lesser leverage effected by the disclosed arrangement of the trailing cable, which brings its draft or effective connection somewhere near the mid portion of the machine, will sufiice.
Referring now to the mechanism for the winding drum 12, the latter is driven from the driving motor 8 through suitable speed reduction gearing, which permits the employment of either one of two speeds. The drum is mopnted to turn upon bearings 25 presented by the head portion 26 of the machine, and is arranged coaxially with the motor, so that its main shaft 27 extends rearwardly through the hollow motor shaft 7 to the speed change mechanism at the rear of the motor. To turn the drum driving shaft 21, the latter is provided with any suitable form of speed change clutching device, a well-known form of which is herein shown "in Fig. 3 as applied to the shaft.
Herein this sconsists of t e grooved clutch member 28 fixedly secured to the shaft to r0 tate therewith, but slidable thereon, carryinggripping members 29 and .30 connected to the said clutch member by the toggle links 31 and 32, respectively, so that w en moved in one direction or thei other the clutch member may be gripped either to the clutch casin direction in whlch the said clutch member is moved. The clutch member may be moved at will in either direction b means of the clutch lever 35 leading to t e short upright shaft 36 carrying at its end the eccentric or cam 37 seated in the groove of the clutch member 28.
The clutch casing ilis fixedly secured to the hollow motor shah 7 so as to be constantl y driven thereby so that. when engaged 33 or 34 according to the,
therewith, the clutch member and the drum driving shaft are driven at a high rate of speed directly from the motor.
On the other hand, the clutch casing 34 is connected to the beveled gear 38 meshing with the beveled pinion 39, the latter secured to the upright driving shaft 40 constantly driven by the large beveled gear 5. When the clutch member 28, therefore, is engaged with the clutch casing 34, the drum driving shaft 27 is driven in the opposite direction and at a reduced rate of speed through the armature shaft 7, beveled gear 5, the upright shaft 44), the beveled gears 39 and 38, and clutch casing 34.
To secure further reduction to the movement of the winding drum, additional speed reduction gearing is employed, preferably of the planetary type, and herein located within the walls of the drum. Referring to Figs. 2 and 4 the drum driving shaft at its forward end has keyed thereto the small driving pinion 41 meshing with an intermediate pinion 42, the latter journaled upon a stud 43 fixed in the arm 44 which is free to turn about the shaft 27. The gear 42, however, engages with an internal gear 45 cut on the inner wall of the drum 12 so that the arm 44 has a resultant slow turning movement which is communicated to the small pinion 46 fixed to the arm and turning coaxially therewith.
A second reduction is secured by providing the second intermediate gear 47 meshing with the pinion 4G and also with the internal gear 45, the gear 47 being carried b the arm 48 which also turns about the s aft 27. Movement is communicated to the drum from the arm 48 by means of the small pinion 49 fixed to the arm, which pinion meshes with the intermediate gear 50 turning upon a fixed journal 50 on the head 26 and meshing with the internal gear 45 on the drum. By means of this speed reduction gearing the high speed driving movement of the motor in one direction is transformed into a slow drum turning movement in the same direction.
Referring to Fig. 5 the operation of the machine in effecting the lateral or main cut will be clear. \Vith the cables arranged as therein shown and as previously described, the clutch lever 35 may be turned to ime part to the winding drum the slow speed turning movement so that the cable 10 is slowly wound in at the same rate as the cable 11 is payed out. This results in maintaining the initially established tension on the cable 11 so that the machine in its travel is held in and against the work. The cutters (which more in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1) act to draw the machine in, and the trailing cable tends to swing the cutter bar forward about the fulcruming attachment of the cable 10 to the machine, holding the cutters against the coal.
By reference to Fig. 5 it will be seen that the machine is held in the cut by the opmsing pull of the two cables exerted one near the wall and the other more remote tllGI'GfIOIIl. By adjustabl taking up or letting out the receding ca 1e 11, therefore, the angular inclination of the machine may be adjusted. Such adjustment in the illustrate machine by the manipulation of the ratchet and pawl mechanism described, or away from the machine by the manipulation of the take-up jack 25.
In Fig. 6 I have shown the arrangement of cables for loading the. machine upon the truck or upon a starting frame such, for example, as the frame 51, which is customarily employed to guide the machine in making the startingor sumping cut. For this purpose the trailing cable 11 passes off from the winding drum 12 about a suitably positioned guide sheave 52 and then extends to a guide sheave 53 fixed at the rear end of the starting frame and thence back to the take-up drum 1? at the rear of the machine. \Vith the table thus arranged the clutch lever is turned to give the quick winding movement to the drum, thus acting to turn the wimling drum reversely at a. high rate of speed, winding in the cable 11 and drawing the machine upon the starting frame at a more rapid rate of travel than is employed in the cutting movement. During this operation the free end of the cable 10 may be taken up by the attendant. Other arrangements of cables within the scope of the appended claims by which the machine may be caused to feed itself from one position to another about the mine bottom, will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
In Fig. 7 I have shown an arrangement of cables which may be employed for making the starting or sumping cut. Under such conditions the advancing cable It) leads from the winding drum 12 about an appropriately positioned and removably mounted guide sheave 54 (see Fig. 4). thence forwardly to a guide sheave 55 fixed adjacent the.coal face and thence backwardly to the point of attachment lt upon the machine. With the clutch lever then turned to give the slow speed, the wirding drum will be turned slowly in such a direction as to wind in the cable 10, drawing the cutter bar and cutters into the coal. During this movement the free end of the trailing caible 11 as it is unwound from the drum may be taken up on the take-up drum at the rear of the machine.
Preferably I provide a. hood or casing encircling the winding drunr 12, or the greater portion of the pc 'iphery thereof, and lying closely adjacent the i able coils. so that a uniform helical relation of the latter will machine may be effected either at the be enforced whether or not tension of the cables is reserved. This op poses any tendency of t 1e coils to open and climb one over the next adjacent one, or otherwise to become entangled.
As a result of my improved construction, it will be noted that it is possible to produce a machine having feed operating and takeup means on the machine and having provision for operating the flexible feeding mechanism and controlling the same from the machine with facility, which at the same time, due to the disposition of the cutter chain sprocket and motor with the axis of the former spaced lon itudinally from the latter, is of a vertical y compact construction, which is adapted to use in low vein work, while, due to the disposition of the cutter chain sprocket in this spaced relation in rear of the motor and the provision of a driving connection between the power driven feeding mechanism and the same end of the motor which drives the sprocket, herein having no part of it extendin r below the bottom of the motor, it is also ma e possible not only to obtain this desired compactness and enable the height of the motor and its supporting means to determine the height of the machine, but to locate the connections to the motor in adesirable and protected position above the cutter chain sprocket and also to locate the controlling mechanism. in such position as to be conveniently operable by an operator at the rear end of the advancing side 'of the machine where he is least liable to injury from the fall of coal which has been undercut. Other advantages of my improved construction. will also be clearly apparent to those skilled in the mining machine art.
While I have herein shown for the purpose of illustration one specific form of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is not limited to the details of construction, or the relative arrangement of arts, or the a plication herein made of the invention, or t e particular form of mining machine shown, but that extensive deviations may be made in respect to these features from the showing made, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
