SPRAYING ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, OLA]? J. Annnss, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spraying Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a spraying attachment for .use with a hose for spraying lawns, trees, shrubbery, golf putting greens, or'wherever it may be desired to mix a chemical or other solution with the water. I
A further object is to provide improved means for controlling the delivery of the chemical or solution to the stream of water.
Other objects of the invention will ap pear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, 2 represents a tank, preferably in the form of a cylinder, having a removable plug 3 for convenience in filling the tank with the chemical or other material that is to be mixed with the stream of water. The filling opening is preferably located'in one end of the tank and at the other end is a removable head plate 4; secured to an annular flange 5 by suitable means, such as bolts 6. When this plate is removed, an opening is exposed the full size of the tank. 7 is a Water intake pipe leading into the tank near the plate 4 and provided with a cut-off valve 8 which, when closed, shuts oil the flow of water through the tank. 9 is a similar pipe connected with the opposite wall of the tank, forming the exit for the stream of water and provided with a controlling valve 8 by means of which the discharge of water from the tank may be prevented. To thisapipe 9'the den hose or pipe line is attached, having the usual nozzle for spraying purposes. This hose and nozzlev I donot show in this appllcation, as it forms no part of my ent invention.
Within the cylinder 2 is a chamber 10 in which the chemical or other material is placed. 11 is a hollow piston rod mounted at one end in a stufling box is in the end wall of the tank and provided at its opposite end With a piston, consisting of discs 13 having packing rings 14 clamped between them to bear on the wall of the cvlinder in the usual way; I rod is eXteriorly threaded, as indicated at 15. A spacing collar 16 is mounted on the rod between the discs 13 and nuts "17 are provided on each side of thediscs for clamp.- ing them securely against the packing ring 1 and spacing collar 16'. V
The piston rod comprises an upper? portion 18, preferably of tubing, and a lower section 19 having one end fitting the tubular part 18, and enteriorly' threaded and provided with a longitudinal-passage 2O communieating with lateral ports'21 which lead to the chamber 10 and similar ports 22 which communicate with the water chamber Between these ports on the threaded portion of the rod I provide the piston, as above described. i
The part 19 in the piston rod is provided with a valve seat 29 and a'valve 80 is mounted to slide in a guide 31'.provided at the upper end of the rod section 19 and close communication between the passage 20 and the ports 21 above the piston. A rod 32 is connected at its lower end to the valve and has a threaded connection at its upper end. with a plug 33 in the top of the tubular part 18, of the piston rod 11. A handwheel 34 on the rod provides means for conveniently opening and closing the valve. A flange 35 limits the upward movement of the piston in the cylinder and a gauge bar 36 on the head of the cylinder provides means for indicating the position of the piston in the tank.
In the operation of the device, when water is admitted to the chamber 23 and the valve 30 is opened, the pressure in the chamber 23 will raise the piston and a portion of the solution will be forced through the ports 21, the passage 20 and the ports 22 to mingle with the stream of water flowing through the chamber 23. I claim as my invention:
1. A spraying attachment comprising tank having at one end intake and dis charge hose connections, a piston ai'ianged in said tank, there being water chamber on one side of said piston communicating with said hose connections and a chamber for a chemical solution on the other side of said piston, a rod connected with said piston and having passc therein extending on one side oi said piston and ports communicating respectively with said chemical solution chamber and with said water chamber, a valve mounted in said passage between said ports for cutting off the flow of the solution from one chai l or to the other, and ncans extending to the outside of said tank for opening and closing said valve.
2. A spraying attacln cnt comprising tank having intake and discharge hose connections, a piston mounted in said tank and dividing the interior thereof into a chamber" for a chemical solution, and water chamber communicating with said hose connections, a rod for said piston comprising a lower portion having a longitudinal passage therein extending above and below said piston and provided with ports com municating respectively with said chemical solution chamber and with said water chamber the upper portion of said rod being tubular in form and slidably mounted in one end of said tank, and a valve mounted in said tubular portion and adapted to close the passage in said rod between said ports,
upward movement of said piston when the valve is open forcing the solution through the passage in said rod into said water chamber and said valve having astem mounted in said tubular portion and an operating handle above said piston rod.
3. A spraying attachment comprising a tank having intake and discharge hose connections, a piston arranged in said tank, there being a water chamber on one side o1 said piston, communicating with said hose connections, and a chamber for a chemical solution on the other side of said piston, a a rod connected with said piston and having a passage therein communicating respec tively with said chemical solution chamber and with said water chamber, movement of piston through the pressure in said water chamber forcing the chemical solution through said to mingle with the contents of said water chamber, and means for regulating the flow of the chemical solution through saio passage.
l. A spraying attachment comprising a tank having intake and discharge hose con ncctions in its walls, a piston arranged in said tank, there being a water chamber within said tank on one side of said pistonv communicatii'ig with said hose connections, and a chamber for a chemical solution on the other side of said piston, said piston having a rod and passage being 'irovided leading from said chemical solution chamber to said water chamber, through which passage the chemical solution is forced to mingle with the contents of said water chamber when said piston is moved by the pressure in said water chamber, and means for regulating the flow of the chemical solution through said passage.
